Hello All!
The final power on Seltyiel's Spellblade Role reads: "Discard a spell to put a a weapon from your discard pile into your hand."
Simple enough. But I am wondering if I could do that during an encounter, specifically versus a villain with multiple checks.
Hear me out. I was playing as Balazaar a few months back and found a thread were Vic stated Balazaar could use his power of discarding a spell to grab a monster from the box, provided that monster was to be used to affect the combat check (thereby fulfilling the requirement of only playing cards/using powers that affect the check). So I am wondering if that thought process applies here as well: I discard a weapon to get the added bonus for my first check against the monster, and then I use Seltyiel's power to discard a spell to get the weapon back, which will be used on the second check.
It seems like if Balazaar's power is legit in this context, Seltyiel's would be too.
Does this seem like a reasonable interpretation? Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Nope, can’t be used during an encounter, because in order for that to have an effect you need to do Something Else (aka play the weapon you just grabbed) to have any effect on the encounter. The power therefore doesn’t directly affect the situation and therefore cannot be played during an encounter or a check.
I’m not sure of the Vic post you’re referencing, the situation may be different there. If anything cares about the number of weapons (or different card types, or cards, etc) in your hand then it’d be affecting the situation and therefore playable during the check/encounter—adding a weapon to your hand would therefore adjust that number automatically which would have whatever mechanical impact on the check/encounter. An example (contrived) power would be something like “The difficulty to defeat is increased by the number of weapons and Attack spells in your hand.” This would enable Seltiyel to use his power during the check assuming he uses a non-Attack spell to fetch the weapon (otherwise the difficulty would be unchanged and therefore nothing directly affected the situation). The difficulty would then increase by 1 with no other action required on anyone’s part.
Can you link the post?

Found the thread myself. It supports my position, because that was the discussion that created this FAQ entry. It’s often important to read the entire thread instead of taking a quote out of context :)
Indeed you cannot use it during an encounter to fetch a weapon that you are then planning on playing. That doesn’t directly affect the situation (see FAQ link). The only exception are weird corner-case powers like the one I invented above.

Ok, that's super helpful. My son just got his role card and we were deciding if the power could be used that way.
I don't remember the entire Balazar thread, just that Vic had stated (I think) that Balazar could indeed discard a spell to grab a monster to use on the check, which I was equating to this situation. Am I remembering that correctly? It's obviously too late now but I hope I didn't cheat with Balazar that entire adventure :)
thanks again for your response!

Vic said that before the rule was in place. In other words, after further consideration the designers changed their minds and issued the above FAQ. So, to clarify, Balazar cannot use his power to draw a monster during an encounter, because it doesn’t directly affect the situation.
If you played it wrong in the past, don’t worry about it. You can just make adjustments moving forwards :)
