Need Some Suggestions for Off-Hours Study

Hey folks, need to crowd-source this a little.

I have a PFS2 Bard (Pathfinder Dedication) who is Grand Archive and is now investing in some Off-Hours Study (tier 1 GA boon) to pick up a new Lore skill.

His story started with the Free RPG Day, We Be Heroes boon. He knows the knights story from that narrow escape.

Subsequently many of the scenarios I've played him in have involved undead. So my initial thought was he's using Off-hours Study to do his homework on the threat of the Whispering Tyrant and his undead hordes.

But after rereading the Common Lore Subcategories sidebar on page 248 of the CRB, I'm concerned that "Undead Lore" may be too broad for a Lore skill. The sidebar suggests that Lore is limited to a narrow category of creatures.

So I'm looking for suggestions of an appropriate Lore subcategory that would represent that kind of interest.

Any thoughts?

I thought the same, but Undead Lore is a Lore skill already in the game - it is the Lore granted by Lastwall Survivor background, as well as several others. I believe the intention is that a broad Lore like Undead would be a -2 to the Recall Knowledge DC, but a more specific one like Lore Vampires would be a larger bonus and Lore Straveika larger still.

Thanks. Good to know there's a referenced use of that lore. That does help.

I'm still open to any other creative suggestions.

It might end up too specific, but might be thematic 'Whispering Tyrant army lore'

I was going to suggest Pathfinder Lore, but since you're already a pathfinder agent, you've got that covered.

Forest Lore is very broad and (depending on GM) can often substitute for Nature.

... But you're a bard, doesn't bardic lore already fill in most of your lore needs? Maybe you'd be better served by learning some new languages?

My Grand Archive Champion is studying languages, since there are fewer options in this edition to learn many of them.

The interesting thing about Bards in 2E is not all of them get Bardic Lore. That said, the Pathfinder Agent dedication gives you a remarkably similar bonus with its proficiency boost to untrained skills.

While an extra language might be useful in some situations, this is less about mechanical benefit and more about embracing one aspect of the PF2 story arc. Given Society involvement in Gallowspire, Last Wall Knights and Goblin tribes shelter from the devastation in Absalom and repeated undead threats in his (limited) adventures .. this character senses bad things on the horizon and wants to be prepared.

That said, is there a language that someone studying the Whispering Tyrant should learn?

Unfortunately, the boon only grants access to Common languages, so the only Common language linked to the events around the Whispering Tyrant that I can think of off the top of my head is Orc (either to deal with the ones he's using or the ones who are standing against him).

No. Lore skills can scale faster and higher than bardic lore. It's pretty well balanced in that regard.
