Double Weapon Mindblade

Advice

I am interested in playing a Magus Mindblade that uses a double weapon.

I know it is not the most optimal way to build a Magus but I think it will be fun. The problem is, I have no idea on how to optimise it.

Making a double weapon finessable is extremely difficult so a Strength build is the way forward I believe.

As for traits; Desperate Focus (Because Psychic concentration is difficult), and Curator of Mystic Secrets (Exemplar trait, for decent spontaneous metamagic), +1 Drawback.

Then there are feats, Magus Arcana, Psychic spells, that I have no idea over

How do I optimise this non-optimal build?

For a mindblade magus casting defensively is ridiculously hard. So, don't. Cast mirror image and have an image soak the AoO, cast enlarge person and/or long arm (or get the lunge feat) and cast from out of reach of the enemy, cast greater invisibility and avoid AoOs entirely, get a familiar with the figment archetype to trigger AoOs from the enemy before you cast (and you hope they don't have combat reflexes), or just plain max AC.

Off the psychic spell list placebo effect is a spell you have to have. Mindshock, draconic ally, horrific doubles, chain of perdition, twilight knife, contingent action, telekinesis, calcific touch and mental barrier are worth a look IMO.

Arcane accuracy is going to be even better for you than usual if you're taking spell combat and TWF penalties simultaneously. A figment familiar to help flank with might be similarly useful if your party is poor at doing so.

This is what I have sketched in so far

Magus (Mindblade)

Speed: 30 ft.

Race: Human

Stats - 25 Points

Str: 15+2=12

Dex: 16

Cons: 14

Int: 15

Wis: 10

Cha: 7

TRAITS

Curator of Mystic Secrets (Exemplar)

+1 Magic Trait

FEATS

1 (Level)- Extra Arcane Pool

1 (Human)- Power Attack

3 (Level)-

5 (Level)-

5 (Bonus)- Intensified Spell

7 (Level)- Two Weapon Fighting

9 (Level)- Improved Two Weapon Fighting

11 (Level) - Lunge

11 (Bonus)- Weapon Focus

13 (Level)-

15 (Level)-

17 (Level)- Greater Two Weapon Fighting

17 (Bonus)- Weapon Specialization

Arcana

3 (Level)-

6 (Level)- Arcane Accuracy

9 (Level)- Accurate Strike

12 (Level)-

15 (Level)-

18 (Level)-

Again, no idea if it is any good. I just like to put "the skin on the bones" to see how it is looking. Easier to visualize in my opinion

A magus can't get power attack at level 1 (BAB 0) and getting two arcana to improve accuracy seems unnecessary.

OTOH I wasn't kidding about a figment familiar being useful, one way or another.

You should have the dex and damage needed to make combat reflexes useful and there are spells which can give you the reach. Actually since you have Str and Dex and Int you might get use from redirect attack. Then of course there'll be your metamagic, whichever you prefer.

BTW which actual double weapon were you looking at?

Good catch. Pick it up at 3rd instead. Honestly I think I could probably pick a different race, the build doesn't appear to be feat starved. Maybe a race with 1 or 2 natural attacks could be useful. Just an idea

Between 3/4 BAB, Power Attack, Spell Combat, and TWF, I genuinely think I need all the help I can get.

Combat Reflexes could be good, especially as you can two hand AoO I believe

There's not a lot to choose from, probably Weighted Spear. I am never a fan of Weapon Proficiency Feats if I can help it. Not sure how much benefit I would get from an Exotic Double Weapon

Both those arcana also require swift actions. Every round. Familiar or empower spell (despite being 1/day) or flamboyant arcana may be more useful than one of them.

A quarterstaff comes with other options, or a kusarigama gives reach which might be worth a feat. A weighted spear is more efficient on damage though, true.

Good point, I hadn't read them properly.

A Figment Familair is very easy to skin considering a summon my weapons. A Psychic created familiar is cool. Just don't see where it can fit at the moment.
