Claw Blades & Feral Combat Training

Rules Questions

I have recently been intrigued with using the Claw Blades, it is just annoying that they are not the easiest thing to understand.

These subtle blades can only be used by catfolk with the cat’s claws racial trait. Bought in a set of five, they fit over the wearer’s claws on one hand.

The blades grant the wearer a +1 enhancement bonus on claw attack rolls with that hand and change the weapon type from a natural weapon to a light slashing weapon. Catfolk with the cat’s claws racial trait are proficient with this weapon. The claw blades can be enhanced like a masterwork weapon for the normal costs. The listed cost of the item is for one set of five claws for one hand.

Now the way it reads is that feats that affect claws, still apply to the attack. Such as Weapon Focus (Claws).

Where I am getting confused is when it comes to whether Feral Combat Training still works.

Choose one of your natural weapons. While using the selected natural weapon, you can apply the effects of feats that have Improved Unarmed Strike as a prerequisite.

I have been able to read it both ways, and want your helping in settling this one way or the other.

Doesn't work

  • Claw is now a light slashing weapon

Does work

  • "using the selected natural weapon" = claw - 'Therefore it can read as 'While using claws', and can then be applied

It really comes down to how you emphasis things

Count me in the "doesn't work" camp - claw blades are not the "selected natural weapon" because they aren't any natural weapon.

I’d honestly say it does work. A lot of people try to impose heavy restrictions on what clawblades can and can’t do to the point of making them pretty much worthless... there is no harm letting them work with feral combat training... which tends to get hit with even more unnecessary limitations (such as the endless claims of it only affecting one singular claw, and if you have temporary natural weapons it doesn’t work at all... stupid restrictions)

Anyways... even if you have a DM who rules they don’t work together... if your making a catfolk monk (which I assume you probably are given feral combat training) you can actually just take the Catfolk FCB once and turn your clawblades into monk weapons...
