Oh Rats! : a question

Pathfinder Second Edition General Discussion

What do ratfolk, wererats, and ratlings all think of each other? Surely they must cross paths obsessionally, how do they interact?

Well what do you think of baboons, gorillas and opposing political voters?

If the person doing the thinking is a PC, upon meeting one of the others likely thinks "is this a monster or villain so I can justify murdering them and taking their things?"

If the person doing the thinking is an NPC being bet by a PC of one of the others, they likely think "are they going to murder me and take my things?"

If the person doing the thinking is an NPC being met by another NPC of one of the others, they'll won't be thinking anything at all because such an interaction is outside of scope.

But seriously, Artificial20 has the right of it. "Hey, we share genetic similarity. So what."

Cousins who may or may not get along, but at least aren't repulsed by the others' rat traits. Maybe they think of each other as exotic?

Wererats might actually seem like an abomination since their rat nature is linked to a curse which turns them evil.
Would humans appreciate a curse that forced dwarfs or elves to become human (and do human evil things) every full moon? Likely not, and even once they controlled their human side, it'd seem wrong when they took a faux human form.
And wererats might fall in that "uncanny valley" for the normal rat peoples where they seem far less natural for the few similarities they have. Maybe it'd be like a human looking at an android, no connection.

Also, is there a unifying force? Many Mwangi primates have the Gorilla King (and the divinity above him) to rally around. Yet we're primates too an unaccepted. So even a rat deity may not appreciate all sentient bipedal rats (again the wererats who'd likely have their own deity, even if just for lycanthropes in general).

And finally, what relationship best serves the current story, setting, and characters? That's what'll really determine the situation.

Seems like more of a matter of culture than anything else. In some communities they might get along, in others not.

Okay, I'm mostly gonna use analogies here.

Your average ratfolk probably views a wererat much how a human would view a were-gorilla. They turn into something vaguely similar to them, but the fact that they're a werecreature sort of overshadows everything else.

The aforementioned ratfolk probably views a ratling much the way a human would view, oh, something between a derro and a charau-ka. They're crazy little bastards with weird magical abilities that happen to kind of resemble the ratfolk, more than anything else. There's not actually much in common there (plus ratlings regularly engage in bestiality and eat children, so there's that).

Ratlings probably view both wererats and ratfolk the same way they view just about everything else: as either prey, masters, or threats to them. They're horrible little things not super concerned with appearances. They might see wererats as infringing on their territory with 'their' rats.

Wererats are perhaps the most diverse of the options here, just because what species they are other than a wererat likely has more to do with how they perceive ratfolk than anything else. I mean, a human, a ratfolk, a gnome, and a hobgoblin are probably all gonna view the ratfolk through that lens before even thinking in terms of 'being a wererat'. Their views towards ratlings are probably not too dissimilar to those ratfolk have of the horrid little things.

I think that ratlings are mostly known as "Those horrid little buggers that snuck into the pens where I keep my pets, and either ate or mated with all of them".

The bestiality thing seems like a massive problem for warrens. Ratfolk are noted for raising giant rats as beasts of burden, and i have little doubt they keep normal rats as pets. So for a race that cares for and lives in close proximity with well bred and raised rats.... ratlings are a complete eyesore.

Well, more than an eyesore, I suppose. Ratlings are CR2 with the ability to both summon swarms and invisibility/dimensional door. So for the most part, I think ratfolk would form a posse and kill them on sight.

I think that's the attitude of most sapient species to ratlings given their generally unpleasant proclivities. And a sound attitude it is, really.

What about a wererat ratfolk? Once a month, they just grow in size and turn viscious? Or do they start looking human and freak out?

Pretty much, but I think they will have more experience and a more organized response, just due to the fact that ratlings are more likely to try to hang around their warrens.

No, they look more rat-like, don't change in size, and can turn into rats. Much like a human who became a were-chimpanzee or something like that.

Yeah, fair enough. I can definitely see that.

I thought I left this question behind when I stopped playing World of Darkness. :-)
