Not sure how to phrase this, but here's the deal. I'm starting to play a PbP game here, and I'm struggling to figure out some of the technical things. For example:
How do I add an avatar to my character name for posting purposes?
Do I need to add my character as an alias in my account?
Once I post 10 times, am I stuck with that character forever as far as PFS2 is concerned?
Any help is appreciated.

Go to HERE and add your alias. You also add your avatar picture during this process.
If you wish to post as that specific alias, then yes, you need to add it to your account at the "alias" page.
Yup, 10 posts and the name is fixed, however you can change the avatar picture. Other answer, you can re-use an alias for a new campaign if you are no longer using it for the old campaign.

Okay, when I go to the page you linked, it shows my character's name. But when I try to create an alias with that name it says it's already in use. I think this is because I have it as a character name. I think I'm caught in some kind of Catch-22 here.

That is an alias as a Pathfinder Society character that you created sometime in the past. Single click on it and it should bring up that alias with the option for you to edit it, including an avatar picture.
Nope. It brings up a page with "Profile", "Aliases", "Campaign", "Posts", and "Threads" headers. Clicking on "Profile" bring up a blank window with an "Edit My Profile" button. Clicking that button brings up a form to fill in a bunch of information about the character, but nothing about avatar pictures.

Sorry, been a while since I did an alias.
Go to HERE
You will probably have to login in order to reach that link.
Left side should list you primary and alias ids.
Click on EDIT for the one you wish to edit. That is where the avatar picture and a couple of other things are located.
Go back to the other page to fill in details about the character.

Do you need a new character?
All the aliases here are your registered Society characters. You need to create a new Society character for the right campaign.
And you can edit those characters if you go to My Account -> Organized Play
There is an Edit button next to each character you have. And there you can set an avatar or change the faction.
Pay attention what kind of character you are creating!
We do have Pathfinder First Editon and then Pathfinder First Edtion Core, the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, Pathfinder Second Edtion and Starfinder. Can't remember in which order the bottons to create a new character are sorted.

Not trying to make a new character, trying to add an avatar to the one I do have. Account Settings page indicates I have no aliases and when I try to make one with my character name, it says that the name is already being used. I suspect it's finding my character name and not letting me use my own character name as an alias!

So please go to Organized Play under My Account i do hope that links brings you to your characters for Organized Play aka Society.
There you should see My Characters.
And when you only have one and you hopefully never hit delete on it and it's for Pathfinder Second Edtion then you will see a table which is short for you i assume.
# [Your personal Society number]-2001 PFS(2ed) EDIT and DELETE button
Pleae don't hit the delete button it functions as long as there is no session reported for that character! You can loose that number for forever or you need the customer service to get that number back.
Go hit the edit button.
There will be one line saying: Character Image: None. and after None should be a button called Change.

Oh, okay. I was looking for the word "Avatar" like they have on the "Account Settings" page.
Thank you both very much.
