Diabolist prestige class questions

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Liberty's Edge

I love my Asmodeus Cleric. He is Aasimar nevertheless which makes him complicated person. In general as well as mechanically.

Until 7 lvl everything went fine. He was Cleric 6 (Asmodean Advocate) / Hellknight Signifer 1. But since I gain couple of levels of the Diabolist prestige class, and additional resources changes, I do not sure how things works. And aonprd.com now suggests a bit another version of the prestige class.

As I understand I should use rules from Princess of Darkness book for Diabolist.

1. Diabolist gain Imp Companion. So its fine to own both snake familiar and imp companion, right?
2. The snake (named Aroden, lol) got Celestial template because of Celestial Servant feat from Aasimar's list. But can I somehow make my imp Celestial with such feat? As a companion he does not seems to have Fiendish template, or I missed something.
3. The main character is obviously LN. But what about my friends? I play it as the Companion is LE, and the Familiar is LG (being celestial with name Aroden). As for roleplay - thats great. But is is cross rules or not?
4. If I up my main Cleric class I will be able to swap the snake to a new Imp Familiar. Will I have two different imps? Will the new Familiar Imp become Celestial one?

So, I can continue with such questions and you may be creative in different questions here around but please, help me to clarify if I wrong somewhere.

You have a alent for asking hard questions.

I believe not.

I am pretty sure the rule is you can only get one familiar and if you have a 2nd classs that grants a familiar you have 1 familiar but the levels stack to determine it's characteristics.
I have tried to look this up and can't find it.

You can only take a feat once unless the feat explicitly says you can. Celestial Servant does not.

But see my answer to 1, this won't arise.

Mostly this is answered elsewhere. Giving a creature the celestial template won't change its alignment. So the snake would still be the same alignment as you.

An imp does not have the infernal template. It's infernalness is already figured in it's stats.

As far as I know there is no rule against giving a devil the celestial template. Maybe there should be it seems absurd. But that wont change it's alignment or make the familiar celestial.

It isn't explicitly stated anywhere that you can only have 1 familiar as a general rule. However, abilities that "might" result in having more than one typically include language that prohibit this from happening. So, it seems that you aren't supposed to have multiple as per the RAI. In the case of diabolist it states

Diabolist wrote:
Imp Familiar (Ex): A diabolist forms a close bond with a particular imp, similar to how a wizard gains a familiar. This functions as the arcane bond wizard class feature, but as if the diabolist had selected the Improved Familiar feat. If a diabolist has class levels in another class that grants a familiar, levels in that class and her diabolist class levels stack for determining the overall abilities of her imp familiar. The imp familiar can communicate with its master via telepathy as long as the imp is in physical contact with her.

So, because the levels stack you do not gain an additional familiar, instead you just add everything together to see what your familiar gets.

This means that celestial servant would apply to the imp giving it the celestial template. Though as pointed out the template doesn't cause the imp to become good.

how are you taking Diabolist? It requires you to be LE

I see, on d20pfsrd it seperates it by the two books it appears in and Prince of darkness relaxes the alignment requirement so that you can be LE, LN or NE.

Edit: Weirdly, this version of the class treats the imp as an animal companion not a familiar. Which means that you would have a snake and an imp and eventually two imps. However, one of them acts like a familiar and the other one acts like an animal companion. Also, since celestial servant only applies to a single creature (and it can't be taken multiple times) you would have to decide which one gets to be a celestial. The other one would just be a normal imp. So I guess you would then have a devil and an "angel"

There are two versions of the Diabolist: the Classic Diabolist from 2012's Princes of Darkness (which could be LE, LN or NE) and the New Diabolist from 2017's Book of the Damned (which is LE only). You want the Classic Diabolist -- the new one is generally inferior).

Anyway: You want to click on this link here. It will give you the Guide to the Diabolist, which is like 30 pages long and includes a lot of discussion of feats, spells, and magic items for making your character really shine. There is also a bunch of other stuff that you might find useful, including a guide to Planar Binding and discussions of which creatures to summon and bind.

Congratulations on playing a Diabolist! Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

Thank you! I will familirzise with mitntioned Guide.
Yes, this confusion becasue of editions from different books!
As far as Additional Resources suggests, I should use verison from Princess of Darkness, one with imp-Companion.

I got this about Celestialness.

From now it seems really cool to play and resourful for different situations! Even though restricted by PFS for some reasons.
He just should not die yet ...
