Wealth / item acquisition question

Advice

Do you feel that the rules on wealth and item acquisition gives you enough to work with or do you always feel starved?

There is the basics. You need to increase your to hit. Your damage. Your ac. Your saves. Those are basically/largely wealth tax of sorts, you don't upgrade you fall behind.

But then there is the fun stuff. Staves. Wands. Scrolls. Spells. Unique worn items such as belts.

Heaven forbid you decide you want a second weapon if your martial. (Ranged+melee).

I would say "most" GM's will give on average more than the "wealth/lvl" guidelines.

I myself as a GM am not terribly worried about slightly being overgenerous as I am sometimes mean and have situations where players loose their shiny toys.

I think the guidelines in table 10-9 should be fine. It splits up the budget to achieve the things you want.

The "Permanent Items" column of course does magic weapons and armor, but those runes are only taking levels 2, 4 and 5 at low level. Level 3 permanent items could be things like a wand, or doubling rings. Level 6 permanent items could be a staff for example.

It's entirely reasonable that a 4-player party gets some of their allotment of permanent items in the form of magic weapons, but as a wizard or cloistered cleric that doesn't do a lot of weapon strikes, you might get a staff or wand instead. It's not like wizards get forced to carry +1 striking weapons if they don't want to.

And scrolls are paid for first out of the Consumable Items column, which provides for a trickle of consumables.

If you want more, or something else, there's the Party Currency column.

Guidelines are just that you can follow them or not and as long as you stay within a reasonable margin you will be fine.

I never thought about that, because I only did games that started at lvl 1 and 2 one shots at higher lvls that the players only had the weapons and armor with runes and nothing else.

So I will do what I would buy at lvl 5, 13 and 20 with a Martial and Caster to see if I have a problem, I will use the Lump Sum rules instead of the permanent items + currency.

From what I see the Money is confortable if you only use one weapon and no shield as a martial character, if you want another weapon like a bow I would recommend keep the striking rune one tier behind.

Casters have a lot of money for s$$*, buy scrolls, wands and stuff to give more spellcasting during the day.

My game is currently a rotating GM game. We've been analyzing the wealth table together, and it actually looks pretty generous to us. The characters easily get fundamental runes, and there is enough money for some swag on the side like an extra weapon at most levels.

As a monk I'd want an extra ranged weapon old handwraps plus clothing runes plus shield plus something fun like lifting belt.

For sure, you'll have that stuff built up around level 6 following the wealth table. Our martials at 6 have almost exactly what you're describing with 2 weapons, magic armor, and a magic shield. We have each gotten at least 1 magic trinket of some sort as well, though we didn't choose those items. We're following the wealth table pretty closely.

My Bard at that level had magic armor, a virtuoso instrument, a wand of manifold missiles, a spellbook with almost all of the level one spells, quite a few level 2 spells, and a few level 3 spells beyond his repertoire. Keeping up with a spellbook is a lot of work.
