Cannot dismiss light spell?

So, when you cast the light cantrip, it lasts all day and more, until your next daily preparation. According to the Core Rulebook, p. 305, a spell can be dismissed with the Dismiss action, but only if the spell explicitly allows that. There is no mentioning of dismissing in the description of the light cantrip. While you can cancel an individual casting of light by casting the cantrip again, you have the new instance to worry about then. There seems to be no way to actually get rid of the spell until the next morning.

This is especially inconvenient if you use a wayfinder, which can be commanded to cast light upon itself once per day. The thing will just light up your night—good luck getting a good night's sleep.

Is this intended? Or am I making a mistake here?

I actually just ran into this in a game I'm GMing. My guess is that it should be dismissible but isn't by RAW.

When you're just casting it as a cantrip, you can always cast it again on a rock and throw it away or go off and leave it, which is a kludgy way around having a way to turn the light off but ultimately works. But items that light up *and apparently never turn off again* aren't working as they should if there's no duration. My guess is, when it comes to the wayfinder, whoever copied it over forgot it wasn't 10 minutes per level any more.

You put the compass of light into a sack and cinch it shut.

I'd imagine most people with the light cantrip carry or wear something that the light can go in easily.

Like a locket. When you want to "turn off your light", you just re-cast light on something in the locket, and keep it closed. As a bonus, if you want the light again, you could just spend one action to Interact with the locket to open it, instead of two actions to Cast a Spell to create a new light.

Awfully complicated; I think it would make much more sense for the spell to be dismissible. For that matter, I think any spell that has a duration of "until the next time you make daily preparations" should be dismissible.

This is clearly an oversight, but devil's advocate: light is an absurdly strong cantrip. "Impossible to quickly douse" seems like an interesting balancing point alongside sunrods and torches.

Don't know why you've decided to reanimate the thread :) , but it became obsolete, remastered Light: "You can Dismiss the spell".

Bah! Foiled again.
