I Can't Change My Avatar Image

I've been trying to select a new avatar image for one of my aliases, but every time I try results in an error message. I've tried it on Firefox, Safari and Google Chrome. Is this a problem for anyone else?

Silver Crusade

Giving me an error too, Safari on my phone.

Yes, for me, too. There is another thread about this issue, also.

Character Avatar Selection Broken from Jan 20th.

Scarab Sages

Same!

Dark Archive

Same! gah! (I'm now stuck with a permanent disguise self! that'll teach me for picking up strange hats under the boardwalk...)

Me as well - it has been going for 2 weeks already?

The problem appears to still exist.

Still a problem.

Hi all - we're aware that this is an issue, but have not had the bandwidth to resolve it quite yet. It's on our near-term fix list.

I know you're aware of things, but just adding my voice to those who have been affected. This is not particularly a request to "hurry up" or any such nonsense, merely attempting to give another data point (if that helps, which it might not).

I tried to recreate the error just to see if there's any particular code or anything I could get, but I just get the following page:

The Page I get wrote:

<insert large purple golem, here>

You’ve reached this page due to an error on paizo.com. The web team has been notified and are working to fix the issue.

To download the Pathfinder Playtest materials, click here.

The Playtest 1 surveys are available here:

It's formatted prettier, but that's what I got. Considering it looks intentional, I'm guessing that's what it's supposed to do when big ol' errors crop up.

So this post probably doesn't help, but it's here, just in case!

(I opted not to copy/paste any url codes, because I didn't know what information is should be kept private or not.)

Thank you all for all you do: I know you're busy and swamped after the season and I know you're working hard on everything. Thanks! You all rock!

Hi Rei Ko,

What's the ETC on this fix? I got disguised characters whose foundations are getting a little thick right now, kinda like your President's... :)

Dark Archive

Ditto to all of the things.

While you're in there fixing this problem maybe you could add the search function back to the avatar selection page? Pretty please?

Dotting for updates.
bandwidth... I did not buy that at first, but is a heavy bandwidth page. Must be turned off for some reason and waiting to turn back on for the same.

Is there a way I can follow a thread without commenting? I am also having this issue but it looks like it’s just a waiting game, so I wasn’t going to post. Then I realized I will likely never be able to find this thread again, it would be handy information for the future.

BossLady, an RSS feed reader would do it.

I am also following to see when this gets done.

It's especially helpful to have avatars in pbp games, as we port avatars over to maps, so we can easily look between maps and gameplay threads.

Ditto on the experiencing the issue and like Geraint tracking to when we can access avatars again.

Yeah, and all the surveys on the error page are over so I can't even do those! Now how am I supposed critique Pathfinder 2nd Edition before its release date?

As a temporary fix to the problem of not being able to add an avatar of any sort to your new character, I suggest:

1) finding a digital picture somewhere that you like (if it is one that you can find as someone else's messageboard avatar you can right click and copy image location, do that and immediately skip ahead to #2). Save the file to your Google Drive* and then go into "sharing" and allow it to be "viewed" if someone has access to the link. Copy the link.
*There are lots of ways to do this, this is just the one I know how to explain, and lots of folks have a Google account, and it's free.

2) Take your copied link (either the one to your file in Google Drive, or the link gained by the "copy image location"--see above) and paste it into one of the spots that make up your character's messageboard subheader (those spots in order of appearance being: "gender", "race", and "class/level"). You have to format your web addresses (urls) as indicated at the bottom of this page in the "How to format your text" spoiler*.
* Basically {url=https://paizo.com}Paizo Inc.{/url} but with different [square] brackets.

I did this with Droo here (even though she has a sort of color matched space holder avatar as well). You can't see it on this page but if you go to her character's posts page you can (you might have to scroll down to find a post with subheader/tag lines). If you do click on the link ("Female Gnome") in her subheader to see what she really looks like. Go to her character profile page to better see how it is done.

Hope that helps.

Radiant Oath

I am sadly faceless. This might have been okay for a ninja, but is problematic for a Play-by-Post character. As a result, Mom hasn't let me join a game yet.

I'm trying to tell her that I am INVISIBLE and that INVISIBILITY is awesome, but she says that won't work for a 1st level Organized Play character.

I think we should ban all avatars due to bandwith until this is resolved.

I think we should officially ban 'bandwidth' until everything is resolved. I mean look at poor Teki up there. He doesn't even have a faction emblem just some text that spells out "Radiant Oath."

You understand that in this context "have not had the bandwidth" means "are too busy", yes?

Pick any problem at Paizo, from the customer service backlog to errata release availability to web site glitches and they all come down to "too busy". I honestly feel bad for the staff. Being perpetually behind can't feel good.

I use a free site. I buy stuff from that free site. When that site is not functional, will I continue to buy stuff from that site?

Avatar selection and the gaming products they offer for sale are two very different things.

They are one in the same. I either use this or that. Right now, this is not so usable. So, I purchase nothing on an unusable sight.

I pinged Customer Service before looking on the Boards for intel. Diego in Customer Service pinged back yesterday, letting me know that the tech team doesn't have a timeline for resolution, as the main energy is focusing on the issues they're having with the 'shipping code'. Therein lies their priority.

Thanks for the info/update Governayle!

I can’t blame them, I’d take care of the paying customers first too. I do appreciate the free site to play on and hope they are able to resolve this in the near future.

Thanks for that update. It makes a lot of sense. The shipping and store functionality is, frankly, much more important to their bottom line than fixing the avatar issue. And, having encountered some problems with it in February, I'm glad it's getting addressed.

Still would love to have the avatar thing fixed, but don't begrudge that prioritization in the slightest.

So, just for some updates, in case it's helpful; while the avatar thing isn't fixed, I noticed another weird thing while trying to make a new alias today:

1) I click, "Create A New Alias" button, and as normal the screen to -

========================
WE INTERRUPT THIS POST TO DESCRIBE A SECOND ODDITY

a) While I was going through the steps to talk about them as I experienced them with this tab open, I hit the "Create a new alias" button, and... was taken to the website feedback page instead, including a warning not to share my personal info up top, and these threads as options.

b) the page claims to be "My Account" - at least the tab-name up top; there is no indication it is on the page itself, however. Also, the threads are selectible as normal - I was able to open another thread from that page, or this thread from that page (MAXIMUM RECURSIVENESS: GO!) for example.

c) clicking "back" gets me back to normal. We may return to our previously scheduled post...

WE NOW RETURN TO OUR PREVIOUSLY SCHEDULED ODDITY
========================

- create or edit an alias shows up Second try! as normal. However! That new alias has this:

Quote:

Posts: You have posted 4 messages.

View your recent posts.

2) Clicking the provided link goes nowhere: this is it and it just goes to the front page.

3) The name automatically provided (which I'd rather not use) is not an alias I can select; it does not appear in any version of my post history, nor anywhere in any of my alias pages.

4) If I change the name, and attempt to change the avatar, after the error page, I click "back," and the message changes to:

Quote:

Posts: You have posted 0 messages.

View your recent posts.

... well, it did several times, but this time the "Missing Page Error" kept cropping this time up and I couldn't get it to repeat the thing that had previously performed that behavior mildly consistently. So!

I know you are all busy; I know this isn't on the horizon to fix (as it is not first priority); but! I figured having more data sets might - might! - be useful. I just figured clarifying for you may come in hand. If not, once again, please ignore this post.

Regardless, you guys rock! Thank you for all your hard work!

(Make sure to take care of yourselves - including proper rest, and health procedures!)

Hhhhhhhhrrrrrrrrrrm. Just noticed another complaint about website things not quite working right, below.

This... I am loathe to suggest this, but... did FaWtL somehow break the site, again? I know the former PostMonsterGeneral used to use us as a "Stress Test" for the site, and we're getting rather large. It might not affect anything, but I figured I'd mention it as an off-hand possibility.

Bear in mind, I know nothing and am even less competent than that implies, so take my "random thought" as just that, and with grains of salt proportional to that.

Again, you guys rock! Thanks!

Yes. The shipping code problem seems important. But... avatars, please.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaalso, attempting to look at any page other than the newest page of the "Favorited by Others" tab on my thing causes the page with,

Your search didn't match any items.

Sorry this seems like a lot of complaints! It is not! It is only for data points for decision making.

And again: take care of yourselves! Thank you for everything!

With Outpost 3 beginning later this month I've already noticed new character aliases missing their avatars.

It will be a fairly bland Convention this time around.

Same for me, I like to have avatars for posts.

I know it's been said that the fix isn't as easy as we think it is, but ... couldn't whatever was done in late January be undone so we go back to whatever we had mid-January? Like, is that a (temporary) fix that's not as easy as I think it is?

4 people marked this as a favorite.

Afaik, what was "done in late January" was the update to charge state sales tax on shipments to certain states and is vitally necessary to Paizo selling products and keeping the lights on. (How it borked the avatars, etc., I have no idea, but I've been told that the Paizo site, due to its unique evolution from their magazine days, is a delicate ecosystem with everything connected to everything else.)

Not to mention that undoing it still requires time the tech team needs to be spending on shipping February orders and subscriptions that still haven't shipped due to software glitches.

As long as people are not getting products they have paid for, that has to be the priority over people using a free resource for personal entertainment. (And I say that as someone very involved in the PbP subforums here.)

Iow, it sucks, but we aren't paying for avatars.
