Herolabs says celestial familiars are not available to Core characters. I know Herolabs isn't infallible, but it is usually correct. So I want to check.
Improved Familiar is a feat in the Core Rulebook.
Right there in the wording of the feat, it says you can have a celestial template added onto any of the animals on the regular list.
I was going to take a celestial cat until I get to 7th level and can take a homonuculus.
It isn't that big a deal either way, just checking.

Good question! The celestial creature template is in the Bestiary. The Bestiary is a GM resource and only the Core Rulebook is allowed for players playing a Core game. I could be wrong, but, I believe that a celestial companion would not be allowed to a player in Core. Let's see what others have to say when they chime in.

The Bestiary is generally allowed as a resource if the origin of the rule stems directly from the CRB. If we used your logic then the statistics for summons, animal companions and familiars would not be available for use in the core game. I think this is a clear cut case of an acceptable use of the bestiary as a resource for a core character.
Exactly my point but you got there first Vie.

Also animals purchased from the equipment section, such as dogs and horses.
I am pretty sure that if the source of the option comes from the CRB, but how those options function is simply explained elsewhere, then you're fine.
The only wonky situation I could see coming up is, IIRC, having one of the "trade goods" animals that are detailed in one of the later Bestiaries. Like goat, or pig, or whatever it was.
But, obviously not game breaking.

Ok, unless I hear further info to the contrary, my cat will be celestial.
Like I said, not that big a deal. My familiar hasn't been used in combat and hasn't taken any attacks or damage yet. I have only used it for scouting if the group doesn't have any one at all sneaky.

i think the first one is free, so at 7 you need to dismiss and spend 1400 gold. just my thought on it

Whoa crap. I didn't think of that. Maybe I should go ahead and take quicken now even though I won't be able to use it for a long time.
