Mechanic using a combat drone as a Segway?

Advice

Wayfinders

Okay, I have a weird idea rattling around in my skull. I want to make a Gnome Mechanic Pilot with a combat drone mounting a Light Reaction Cannon with a Riding Saddle. Is this idea as nutty as it sounds? If nothing else, it will definitely be fun. Suggestions are totally welcome!

You should do some searches - it's come up many times and it is do-able.

Thanks, yup, seeing a couple of threads about this inspired it. I was wondering how well it actually works and suggestions for the build since he is just on paper so far.

I've seen some people do this in starfinder society. it works pretty good: its not top tier damage but its more than viable

Gnome or Ysoki would be fun i'd bet.

my current character is a gnome mechanic who rides his drone - but he's melee focused, with the star knight archetype.

I woukd have thought that archetype would be pretty difficult to live with on a drone mechanic (since my own drone mechanic experience pointed to Repair Drone as a nearly unavoidable tax). How many times did you lose that drone before becoming able to do any worthwhile repairs at level 8?

fortunately, we started at level 10.

Joutes Nautique and his bold steed Cupcake would have been utter dross at lower levels. But at level 10+? He's pretty darn good as a bruiser. He's got a lance, his mount has a lance, and he can deal some mad damage plus the drone's got a ton of tools.

I had this idea for a raxillite, the tiny playable race from alien archive 3, mechanic with a hover drone with a riding saddle. A flying gun platform and possible stealth/infiltrator sounds neat!

Dark Archive

I play a gnomish mechanix who rides his drone in Society play. The biggest issue is bulk. Rules as written, a combat drone (at 14 strength) can only carry 6 bulk before it gets encumbered and moves at half speed, defeating the purpose. Gnomes or Halflings are your only option, using the most generous estilation of 10 lbs counting as 1 bulk. And that's before you count any bulk from gear.

Expect to play a very skinny character.

Well. Ysoki are known to be weirdly heavy. Like, three halflings heavy.
I'd say they're just dense but that doesn't really sound good in english.

I wouldn't rely on the assumed bulk of a PC to decide if they can ride their drone.

Well the problem is there's a complete lack of rules to help boost the drone's effective carry capacity, so the 10 lbs = 1 bulk is our only metric. And under those circumstances, even a Ysoki who incorporates Fasting and Nudity as their core character concepts is going to be about as heavy as a gnome that ate an entire other gnome.

You have some potential if you get the Cargo Rack mod and ask the GM to let you ride around in that, but it's still over capacity.

Trust me, I'm as sad about this as anyone else. But hey! If there's a small sized race from Alien Archives without a listed weight you can be super generous about its portions. Heck, there are even a few tiny races that nix the problem altogether.

Something that's maybe important to this, bulk does not only measure weight. Its also considers the actual size, volume, and ease of carrying for an item.

10 pounds of feathers and 10 pounds of ysoki weigh the same, but 10 bulk of feathers and 10 bulk of ysoki would fill a different volume of container.

by all sensible interpretations, the drone would use the alien archive rules about being a mount , which isn't encumbered unless you are.

Failing that there's a spell gem/spell amp/ learn to cast Might of the elicoth (starfinder ant haul),

Get the drone Mods, Armor mods, armor upgrade slot, put load lifters in the upgrade slot.
