How long can you hold a readied action?

Are there any rules regarding the length of time one can hold a readied action?

If an enemy was waiting for a door to open to cast a spell, for example, could she keep just "re-readying" the action until it opens indefinitely until it triggers? Is there any specified limit?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

You can only ready it for 6 seconds (until your next round), but then next round you can ready an action again if nothing has triggered your previous readied action.

The only limitations on this would be things like Fatigue, hunger and thirst. So you could spend a day or so doing it, but after that you'll be taking some penalties and eventually fall asleep or fall unconscious.

Also if you're not in combat an enemy could potentially get a surprise round on you, so your readied action may not go off when you think it would. If they walk through that door you're watching it would trigger, but if someone sneaked up behind you they could potentially get some kind of action that prevents your readied action from going off (if they win initiative they could get a surprise round AND their first round).

Thanks for the reply. That's more or less as I assumed.
