Replicating a Mare's Leg?

What would be the best way to replicate the shortened, one-handed rifle colloquially named the Mare's Leg?

There was a little discussion back when Dawn of Flame was being released on whether the Cinder Rifle line introduced in Fire Starters was such a weapon, as the table it was listed in said it was a ONE-handed LONGARM, but the general consensus (as reflected in the link), is that this was a typo and it is supposed to require two hands.

The Handcannon line of small arms is another gun that could fit the image I'm looking for, that of a two-handed longarm that's been cut down to be wielded with one hand, but is steadier and more effective if you do use both hands, but its ammo type, in my opinion, makes it better as a stand-in for a sawed-off shotgun, which while cool in its own right, isn't what I'm looking for.

At this stage, part of me wonders if the only ways you could replicate this in the game would be to play as a Mechanic using the Experimental Weapon Prototype alternate class feature, which allows you to wield your custom weapon one-handed, even if it's a longarm or two-handed melee weapon at 5th level, or to play as a Solarian with the Solar Flare manifestation and flavor the resulting gun as a cut-down rifle.

Is this an accurate assesment of the situation if I wanted to play a character with such a gun, or is there something I've overlooked? Thank you in advance for your thoughts and advice! :)

The experimental weapon option looks pretty fun and since it's new why not give it a shot?

Pun aside is this for society?

You can also use the tactical scaffold armor upgrade to wield a long arm one handed, but that is a very different aesthetic.

Here's my question: What specific niche would you like your ersatz mare's leg to fill?

From your post, it sounds like something with better damage than the average pistol and range than a pistol when wielded a certain way. Without dipping into specialized class features, your best bet would probably be a Handcannon with either a sight or a full scope attached. Both would reduce penalties from range and cover for a move action while the scope would give you 1.5 your usual range (60ft for a higher level Handcannon). This would put your damage dice progression closer to a longarm's while being a bit more accurate than expected. It still would not be great in terms of range though, and scopes/sights don't work with the Double Tap feat but do work with Trick Attack and Combat Expertise.

You could also take the Far Shot feat, which fits the theme. I've always seen a mare's leg as the sidearm of choice for a sharpshooter character. Far Shot with a scope on a higher level Handcannon would mean you could shoot at a range of 180ft before you start to take range penalties. That's a pretty respectable range.

It isn't for Society, though Experimental Weapon won't be an option for the particular character I'm working on at the moment, as she's a Solarian. I'm just wondering what my options are before I ask my GM if I can switch her Solar Manifestation from Solar Armor to Solar Flare.

That's true, but it's also a helpful option. Thanks, Hammerjack! :)

That's sort of what I'm looking for, yes, I was planning on supplementing it with either a scattergun or breaching gun for close-range. Again, the character is a ranged Solarian, so she'll also have powers to add to the mix. Yeah, ranged fighting isn't the Solarian's strong point, but I'm already playing one who's a melee fighter and wanted to shake things up...and I was inspired by Warframe's Marelok pistol, which the wiki cites the Mare's Leg as its own inspiration.

Solar Armor, I'm assuming?

In that case, definitely pick up Double Tap for closer range targets and Blade in the Night for all targets. You should have a pretty solid damage output with all of that.

Armor is what it currently is, yes, though I was debating switching it to Flare before the game actually starts if that was the most efficient route available.

While that handcannon build looks great, I'm not sure how soon I can fit Double Tap into my build, as I still need Versatile Specialization, and don't have the bonus feat to burn from human (my character's a ferran).

If you can do flare I would. Especially since you can shape your flare as a mare's leg and just go from there.

In real world terms, a Mare's Leg is just a carbine/short barreled rifle. It's not particularly usable one handed beyond being light and pistol caliber.
