Darkvision usefulness? Vs. Infosphere Integration?

Advice

Dataphiles

Hi everyone!

Currently rebuilding a SFS Android Technomancer that I have. Taking a look at the COM, I see that there's a new alternate racial trait called Infosphere Integration that replaces Exceptional Vision.

This really goes well with the concept I have in mind for my character, so I have half a mind to switch it, but I keep hearing that darkvision is pretty much mandatory in any given party. Personally, I have yet to use it to great extent (but I pretty much only play low tiers, which might be part of the explanation), so I wanted to hear your opinions on darkvision. Is it really that good/useful? Might it be worth to switch it for Infosphere Integration? Is it a viable alternative to use Darvision Capacitors?

Thanks!

There are plenty of alternative methods to get Darkvision. Augmentations, a 2nd level spell, or a cheap armor upgrade are the first that come to mind.

Or you could turn in your armor’s flashlight (it has a com unit and com units have one, so hands free light is built into all armor) or if that annoys some incompetent GMs mount a light on your weapon.

The comm unit flashlight is only 15 ft. - if your character is ranged you'll want to consider a Spotlight portable light, with its 100 ft. cone.

darkvision capacitors at 200 credits are an absolute must for any nightblind species.

Nope, nightvision capcitors are TERRIBLE. Put them away. Truuuust. Uuuuuusss

Sovereign Court

Well, a skill focus feat is pretty nice. But darkvision is also pretty important. You can get it back with the darkvision capacitors, but at the cost of an armor upgrade slot. Now, you do have more of those than the fleshbags, but armor upgrades are also pretty nice for other things..

Thanks everyone for the tips!

Got me intrigued. Any specific reason why? Apart from being 300 eyes in the dark that don't want to be seen :P

Yeah, that's a good point. Though I have to say one of the selling points for me is not only skill focus, but the flexibility of it. In a very computer-based scenario? Choose Computers. Important Starship fight incoming? Choose Engineering/Science. Exploring mystical ruins? Pick Mysticism.

I spent last night looking, but could not find them for 200 credits. Where is this coming from? Thanks!

What's nice about the darkvision Androids get is it also gives you lowlight. The dark vision only works out to 60 feet, but low light is forever, so in a low light area where the enemy is further than 60 feet away, you don't have to be concerned with the miss chance.

Darkvision is one of the easier traits to replace with equipment so it's not a big deal to lose it. I would note as a caution regarding Infosphere Integration that it doesn't grant any skill ranks and that Skill Focus doesn't scale with level. You get the most out of it if you take lots of random cross-class skill ranks and even with it you'll struggle with higher level skill rolls.

Skill focus scales fine till 15 or so

Or enemy stealth attempts in dim light.
