War for the Crown Alternate Paths

War for the Crown

Dark Archive

So I read the war for the crown adventure path, and I feel this i one of those campaigns that could be played well by doing an entire different path, specially one where the characters decide to join Pythareus or trying to take the throne for themselves.

So my question here is, how would you change the adventure path so that you may follow any of those two other options.

What Im thinking, for the first volume at first, to keep it the same, with a few variations. The main change is the candidate helper. Eutropia has her steward (forgot her name). So for Pythareus, Im thinking a sergeant of the army, someone that has not only has managed to impress Pythareus, but also who is also incredibly loyal to him. And if the characters want the throne for themselves, first one or more of the players must have some sort of relation to the throne or the royal family, as weak is it might be, and as the helper, well, as some of you may know, the BBEG is some evil society that wants to take control of Taldor, well the idea is that they are helping the PC, manipulating them and all that stuff.

Now, here are the bigger issues.

The first one is if I should keep the immortal cult as it is or make it changes? And should I avoid all that psychopomp and weird afterlife and other planes stuff? I felt they really didnt fit the campaign, but I wouldnt know how to change them.

Second, should I make different volumes/adventures/missions if the PC decide to go on their own route or with Pythareus, and if so, what kind of missions should they have? I do feel something different than those of the adventure path.

Third would probably have to change Pythareus ideas or personality a bit, so that he can an actual possibility for the players to join him. Maybe do it like Eutropia so that at the end of the campaign there is a counter of the stuff that happened an that influence Pythareus personality.

Any other ideas and advices are welcomed.

Joining Pythareus requires the less changes early on, book one could/should be more or less the same, book two could be similar, getting extra footholds and bettering Pythareus' image, while also impeding Eutropa... book three is where things start to change more, but could still be somewhat similar, maybe with the Immaculate Circle making some contact, to deal with a few messes. book four and up???

^ added to this is if the PCs end up double/triple agents at some point.

Unfortunately, this AP was as railroady as it could be. From the outset your the allies of Princess Eutropia and thats it.

Pythareus is the chosen heir of Stavian so it would have been pretty easy for him to claim the Primogen Crown. Stuff that happens in this AP does not make much sense, since the conclusion of the AP is pretty much given to you at the outset of the adventure.

Many doubted Pythareus' claim, and Stavian actions didn't help either.
