Really confused about Cololus from book 1 (spoilers)

Tyrant's Grasp

In the first face to face encounter with Cololus, the book says he is lying on the ground playing dead and explicitly describes this as "Cololus uses his feign death ability to lure the PCs close" What I'm wondering is: what "feign death ability"? It's not something listed under the ettercap stats or as an ability of nightmare creatures. Was it meant as some special variant ability he had, but was left out by mistake?

Check Bestiary 4 again. Creatures with the Nightmare Template have:

Quote:

Feign Death(Ex)

Whenever a nightmare creature is unconscious, it appears dead. A conscious nightmare creature can also make itself appear dead as an immediate action. Any creature that physically interacts with a nightmare creature feigning death must succeed at a Heal check or Will saving throw (DC 10 + 1/2 the nightmare creature’s Hit Dice + the nightmare creature’s Intelligence or Charisma modifier, whichever is higher) to recognize it is actually alive.

Wow! That's really weird as I even looked up nightmare creatures in the SRD to be sure. How did I just overlook that entire entry?

Because it was feigning death.

If I can hijack the thread for the same topic, my party just got past Colulus. There are a couple of references to his using shadow conjuration, but as far as I can tell, he can't use it. Nightmare ettercaps don't get it and the nightmare creature template doesn't give it. Nightmare lords get it, but he's not one.
