Kobolds and Mwangi Dwarves

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Novel idea that popped up in a discussion elsewhere: we know that the Mwangi Expanse’s denizens have at least some trade and communication with kobolds (they’re accepted in Kibwe, rather than treated as monsters). We also know that the Mbe’ke and Taralu dwarves worship dragons and elemental power. Do you think there’s any overlap between these two ancestries who share loves for caves and dragons?

I’m head over heels with how different the Expanse feels from traditional fantasy, especially in 2e, and the idea of dwarves and kobolds peacefully cohabitating and sharing in faith is just such a delight,

It would *definitely* help shift the Avistan-centric focus of the setting if this were emphasized with say, kobolds being a Common ancestry.

That's an interesting idea. Are Mwangi dwarves and kobolds the same alignments as normal?

What do you mean? Ancestry alignments aren’t really a thing in 2e anymore.

Well don't monsters have a standard alignment like in 1e?

Yes, but also no. The bestiary alignment doesn't represent all members or cultures of a creature. In 1e humans were N, but there were humans and human societies of all nine alignments. Orcs were CE, but the Mwangi Orcs were generally chill and non-evil. Humanoid monsters with player options tend to have nuanced alignments that facilitate groups who play with alignment incorporating them as allies and PCs. Not all kobolds were LE in 1e, but kobold societies which PCs opposed often were. This holds true in 2e as well.

It would be neat if a dwarf clan with lots of draconic sorcerers and a similar kobold clan could trace their ancestries back to a dragon who was their common ancestor. Perhaps cooler if that dragon were still alive.

I’d sooner see that be one unified clan.

That would make for an interesting adventure setting. :)

I was thinking more along the lines of a dwarven adventurer and friends having to search for his dragon ancestor who was in possession of an important item. Along the way he finds a clan of kobold "cousins."

Being in the Mwangi would change the societal pressures and dynamics.

If they co-existed peacefully, they both have similar backgrounds even without draconic influences which could lead to some amazing synergy. Especially if they learned how to handle each others weaknesses and strengths.

A mixed-race community would indeed be cool. Dwarves and kobolds are an interesting pairing, being two races most strongly associated with mining, in various iterations.
