Tech level after Earthfall

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Been doing a lot of brainstorming about a post-Earthfall setting, with the generations following the Azlanti refugees onto the Avistani and Garundi mainlands. Obviously the Azlanti knew incredible feats of metallurgy, but I assume much of these were lost and/or not known to the other human cultures of the time. Would you imagine Iron Age? Bronze? Even less advanced?

During the age of Darkness agriculture would be impossible without use of magic, and to be able to effectively mine and smelt metals, people need to build permanent settlements, establish trade relations etc. That means that not counting the remnants of Azlant and Thassilonian emipres, most humans would be stuck in the stone age, probably until the founding of Jistka Imperium in the Age of Anguish.

However, some items from the Age of Legends may remain and be passed down through generations. They would be considered artifacts, as no one at that time would possess knowledge how to create them. Depending on what magical items they have in their possesion, various tribes may have distinct flavor.

As for the remnants of the Azlant empire, especially those that have gathered around Aroden, they would be in a significantly better situation. They would have more magical items than any other people, and a method to construct new ones. However, lacking the manpower and the possibility to trade on a large scale, even they would slowly decline. Their level of technology would depend on which point of time you're talking, whether immediately after the Earthfall (when they could still have a lot of it), or at the end of the Age of Darkness (at which point they would probably have lost most of it).

re: agriculture, the article on Azlanti gods (which is so fun to consider for this possible setting) notes that devotees of Jaidi, the Azlanti goddess of agriculture, helped survivors grow things during the Age of Darkness.

I think that in the centuries immediately following Earthfall, life would have most closely approximated the setting in Jack Vance's "The Dying Earth" novels (also the source of Vancian magic).
