And there are animal companions that have flight (and other movement modes) that don't have the mount trait, and I think that specifically is what frustrates people the most.

I guess that's what I'm trying to highlight, the only option for a flying animal companion you can ride is a 20th level champion feat, which requires you to have taken a companion with the mount trait in the first place. If you get approval to have a companion without the mount trait, your companion will be able to fly but not with you on them.
Guntermench wrote:I mean, for that you need steed ally which tells you to take something with the mount trait.

Yeah, it'd be a really strong feat but if you delay it by a level or 2 (and we'd first have to establish what is the "average" point at which players have access to long duration (1 hr+) flight magic and all day flight magic.

Because I'm imaging that when you first get the feat you can only maybe ride your mount with special movements for an hour per day, because it's too exhausting. Later when all day flight becomes common, the same feat upgrades to allow the same.

Because I can understand it being frustrating that you can't use the fly spell on your cool animal companion that doesn't have the mount trait to fly into battle. Especially when there isn't much benefit to do so over simply having the spell cast on yourself.

I think the main thing the mount trait should preserve is not getting support benefit while mounted and moving.
I think a reasonable solution would be to introduce a class feat for the appropriate archetypes and classes that around the time PCs can get long duration (or all day) flight that you can grab a feat to allow your animal companion (without the mount trait) to use modes of movement other than ground movement while you're riding them.

Honestly the game would be improved by removing the mount trait and its associated restrictions. Put in a feat about having to make a difficult check to stay on a flying mount every round. Then just level gate a feat that allowed you to ride a flying mount with out making that check. You could even give Corgis back their wings.

I understand the need for restrictions. I have always tightly controlled access to flight, and teleport as a GM for d20 games since I first started playing. Primarily by level gating it. There are just so many types of travelling adventures and encounters just short circuited by those abilities.

But Paizo keep over doing it. Fix the problem, don't nerf things into uselessness please.

I agree that the design restriction about what companions you can use as mount is too much restricted. But IMO it's basically the normal design choices to make companions restricted to a controllable situation and avoid them to be too much exploitable. It's a similar situation to size increase that all companions size increases while they are progressing receiving stronger companion feats but not everyone want's this.

But with the new Complex Crafting rules give me a hope of a solution. They can make an alternative rule set in some new book that's gives more flexibility options to companions including a more customized size progression and mountable options for "all" companions.
Gortle wrote:Claxon wrote:I think the whole thing is that Paizo deliberately wants:
