Massive damage rule in Pfs 2e

Pathfinder Society

Dark Archive *

I just had a character take well over double their hit points in dmg from a critical hit. According to the core rule.book, this is massive dmg, aka instadeath.

This was in a society scenario, does society allow massive dmg kills now?

Just for further clarification:

Spoiler:
this is in 01-01 absalom initiative. In the precipice quarter, there is a haunted house. One of the haunts can cause the players to be confused. One of the players attacked another player, did a critical hot and rolled max dmg on his rolls. Ended up with 60 dmg against a character with only 16 hp. (Triple max hp!)

Any ideas?

Unless the core rulebook describes this rule as optional or PFS specifically eliminated that rule from their games, then yes, your character is dead.

Note that this is a very different thing from the optional massive damage rule from earlier games, which could result in the death of a high level character who still had a positive number of hit points. As far as I know, PFS never used that rule.

Well, that was a challenge... killed by another PC... it happens...

Also, flagged to move to the GM Forums

Well the organized play FAQ says:

"Can I use the massive damage optional rule from the Core Rulebook in the Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild?

No, this rule is not legal for play."

But that has not been updated for PF2, so who knows.

Just rename the PC to Schrodinger for now.

But this clearly references the old optional rule.

The PF2 rule is not optional.

That massive damage rule is also a real doozy for low con elven wizards and such. Always 1 crit failed save away from death.

Sorry for the lack of spoiler tag!

One last thing, since they are now dead, can they use a hero point to save them from death? In the rule book it says
"Spend all your Hero Points (minimum 1) to avoid death. You can do this when your dying condition would increase. You lose the dying condition entirely and stabilize with 0 Hit Points. You don’t gain the wounded condition or increase its value from losing the dying condition in this way, but if you already had that condition, you don’t lose it or decrease its value."

It says when your dying condition would increase, but.. they never gained the dying condition, they skipped it entirely and went straight to dead.

Any thoughts?

small rant on scenario:
Why would you allow a haunt based off a 4th level spell in a tier 1-4 scenario, 01-01 Absalom Initiation, where all of the characters are effected at the same time?

As a note I'm also having trouble getting to 60 damage from a low level pick crit.

Yup, but you are also not allowed to ignore PFS rules you don't agree with. The PFS rule is also not optional. Like I said Schrodinger.

Ok, well after you wrote this, I decided to dothe math and make sure it was right. I'll explain how I did it and see if we were wrong in our math

The first level fighter has 18 str and a great pick
D10+4 dmg
He chooses to do a power attack
2d10+4
Gets a crit, the great pick has the fatald12 trait so
2d12+4 +d12
And then double dmg for the crit
2(2d12+4)+d12

Heres where things get nasty, the fighter rolls 2 12's and then an 8 for the fatal bonus
So now we are at
2(24+4)+8
2(28)+8
56+8
64 total dmg at first level.
Actually 4 more dmg than the player thought...
Ugh

Except in the society primer it says,

"While we don’t advocate fudging die rolls, consider the experience of the players when deciding whether to use especially lethal tactics or if a character is in extreme danger of death, especially when the player is new to the game. Most players whose first experience in a campaign results in a character death don’t return to the campaign."

So in this circumstance maybe it is ok to ignore the pfs rules...

Still hoping the hero points could be the savior in this circumstance but will wait to see if anyone has any input on that part

I don't think you can power attack while confused. -24 damage still gets you to 40 which is double 20 though.

Hero Points I think only avoid death from the dying condition. The player with the pick could have rerolled their 20 though...

Sometimes death is meant to be though.

Hmm, that might be a possibility but it says nothing about that in the rules

"You use all your actions to Strike or cast offensive cantrips" I suppose that could be interpreted as only a strike, not a power attack..

**shrug**

Strike, as in the specific action on page 471, not any other action that might happen to generate a Strike, like Power Attack, or Penetrating Shot or Whirlwind Strike.

Perfect, well done!

Doesn't change the death of the player but at least I know that for future reference!

Thanks

Why did the player choose to Power Attack another player anyway? Was he just being a jerk?

No, I told the players they were surrounded by monsters, and then I just randomly assigned monsters to each character
