Rules Discussion

Hi

a rules question came up in our game last night and I'm not sure of the correct answer.
The group found a scroll of sound burst.
We have a bard in our group and a divine sorcerer (Both 2nd level), for purposes of identification can both characters automatically tell what the scroll is (as it is on both of their spell lists) or do they have to make a recall knowledge check (as its on their spell list but they aren't of a high enough level to cast it) or is the scroll of a particular tradition (Occult or Divine) and only one of the characters can identify it?

Thank you for any help

As you can read on page 238, and I quote: "In many cases, you can use a skill to attempt to Identify Magic of a tradition other than your own at a higher DC. The GM determines whether you can do this and what the DC is."

You can also read more about it on page 503/504, Adjusting Difficulty. There is also an example about it.

There is no problem with casting a spell above your level, contrary to previous editions.

As long as the spell appears on your spell list, you're good.

If the spell is a common spell from your spell

Knowledge action and automatically succeed at identifying
the scroll’s spell.

In fact, the spell only becomes divine, occult, etc because of the caster. Apparently magical writings are tradition-neutral. <g>

To Cast a Spell from a scroll, the spell must appear on

your spell list. Because you’re the one Casting the Spell,
use your spell attack roll and spell DC. The spell also
gains the appropriate trait for your tradition (arcane,
divine, occult, or primal).

Yup. The Scroll itself only has the Magical trait. So any of the four magical traditions will work for Identify Magic and at the normal DC too (if you don't automatically succeed because the spell is one you know).

Something without a specific tradition, such as an item with the magical trait, can be identified using any of these skills.

* additionally has the Magical trait. It also gains the tradition trait of the spell stored on it. But for all spells that are able to be cast with multiple traditions, it has the traits for all of those traditions. So all of those tradition traits would be added to the scroll.

But since it does still have the Magical trait, you can still Identify Magic on it using any tradition skill.
