I get you can use Bargain Hunter in Downtime to earn income. I get that you get 2 extra GP during character creation. What I don’t get is the middle part of the description,
“You can also spend time specifically sniffing out a great bargain on an item; this works as if you were using Earn Income with Diplomacy, except instead of gaining money, you purchase the item at a discount equal to the money you would have gained, gaining the item for free if your earned income equals or exceeds its cost.”
When is this used, downtime in addition to earned income or is this done in-game?
If during downtime how many times could this be done? And how is this different than just earning money and buying the item?
Or, maybe it’s used in game. Again, how often can this be used and how does this work for organized play?
Thanks.

I've been wondering about this ability as well. From what I can tell it has two modes:

1. Earn income via diplomacy.
2. Get a discount on an item equal to what you would get by using Earn income via diplomacy (and spending the time to do so...).

I can't see any situation where 2 would be preferrable to 1. I wonder if the intent was to have the Earn Income task in the second case have a level equal to the level of the item you wanted to purchase. At least then there'd be motivation to use it, as you might not be able to find general tasks via Diplomacy at that level.

Thanks for responding. You have an Interesting suggestion, regarding the DC of the item. Hopefully we’ll get more responses to contemplate.

Yeah, that's the only circumstances I can imagine that being a desirable choice. And it would explain why there's no change from the purchase in cases when your earn income roll exceeds the price of the object.

I'd thought it was for flexible RP, or possibly tax evasion ("taxable income? I didn't earn any income, I just found this item being offered for a pittance") but the level of the item setting the task level makes a lot of sense.

Silver Crusade

You also don't have to spend time or effort looking for a job, just start scouring the flea markets.

Also, sometimes you are not looking to get a magical item. Sometimes you just want to make money. So for example, at level 1-3 magical items should be out of your budget. So you stockpile that extra gold for later. Then at level 4 or so, maybe a little earlier than other characters you can use bargain Hunter to get yourself a nice item because of the extra income and the deals.

Also, I'm running a dwarf right now who has specled heavily into crafting, bargain Hunter is a huge boon to him.
