Large and Small Ancestries

Advice

I am working on some homebrew Ancestries and I am considering making one of them Large and one of them Tiny but I am not comfortable or familiar enough with the rules to know what problems, if any, that would cause. I am already aware of the potential for abuse with Large creatures and the Giant Instinct Barbarian ability to use weapons of a higher size category, but what else should I be concerned with.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Tiny means they have to be in the opponent's square to attack, which is kind of clunky to keep track of.

A large creature's innate reach would be extremely valuable for a lot of melee builds, basically all of them. It would have to come with heavy penalties for the other ancestries to remain competitive choices for melee.

Large and huge creatures become problematic for interior dungeon design, as any corridors that aren't 10 foot wide become impractical for them to traverse.

Also, they tend to get in the way a lot in general.

Tiny and huge creatures especially feel kind of off if they don't have pretty hefty adjustments to str, con and hp, which is beyond the usual scope of an ancestry. (A tiny creature should probably have a -4 to their strength and a huge creature should probably get +4s to str and con to feel right).

A tiny character also runs into issues where familiars and companion animals that are balanced by being too small to ride become an issue - its normally okay for a small sized flying pet because the character can't use it to get the ability to fly, but when a tiny character exists that becomes an issue.

Only if their reach is 0, which is not true for all tiny creatures.
