Will lizardfolk, leshy and hobgoblins be society legal on release?

The title. I really hope so, because I want to play all of them in society and I want to play a normal sized race that is not a elf or human.

On release? Almost certainly not. There has pretty much always been a delay between book release and PFS sanctioning.

Legal when the source is sanctioned? I don't think there has been any indication, yet. They may be legal, they may not be legal, they may require a boon purchased from the achievement point system that should hopefully be running by that point.

They are, in my informed but personal opinion, highly unlikely to be automatically legal.

I highly recommend getting some GMing in to start earning Achievement Points. ^_^

**

Pretty sure it's just that GMing earns achievement points faster, isn't it (and cons are worth more)?

But yes, not legal right away, I imagine that it's a priority for sanctioning it will just still take some time to get the feedback for that. Total toss up if it will take boons - if they do hopefully they're very low cost, since it's just not possible to have all that many sessions yet.

I remember Hobgoblins are Uncommon. So I expect them to need some boon. Probably same for Lizardfolk and Leshy.

All three are uncommon based on the blog previews.

Thanks everyone. I hope that if they are locked behind boons, that it won't be as much of a pain to unlock them. Because I still haven't unlocked the skittermander in starfinder society. Because you need to play 24 adventures and from what I've heard you can only make 1 character with that boon. So I'm hoping that if they do something like that. It will be less time consuming and that we will be able to play the races sooner. So maybe 10 adventures and make so that once you have done all that, you can play, let's say the lizardfolk in society and instead of only being able to make only 1 character of that race. Make it so that you can make as many lizardfolk characters as you want. But that is probably just wishful thinking on my part.

People always forget you can get uncommon things with achievement points in addition to any type of boon in 2e.

I'd expect the rewards structure to remain similar to the first edition/Starfinder retail incentive GM boons, i.e. ~96 achievement points (12 scenarios GM'ed) to unlock a single use of the ancestry boon. I do hope they eventually implement what they've been doing in Starfinder and did a tiny bit towards the end of PF1 and have scenario chronicles that unlock a single use thematic ancestry boon.

I would just like to see the Achievement Points actually on the website so we know what they are, how many we have, and how much we have to spend to buy whatever it is we want to buy.

It is now D-Day + 69 and we are still waiting.

Lizardfolk excite me. I was just gifted two Pathfinder Tales books that follow a Lizardfolk character, so I'll probably build a PC inspired off that.

I think Gamerskum just missed a comma.

Or, reordered, "in addition to any type of boon, you can get uncommon things with achievement points"

I *really* hope that they don't set the bar too high for the uncommon stuff.

Sovereign Court 4/5 5/5 ** Venture-Lieutenant, Netherlands—Leiden

Ideally the bar is set so that it's still within reach of people who only play, but noticeably more in reach for people who also GM, and makes it attractive to GM at cons.

Dark Archive 4/5 5/5 ****

I’d expect certain ancestries to be more expensive than others, but that all will be purchasable

Some min be quite expensive, if there are reasons for campaign balance or such. As in... you could earn enough points by GMing 8 sessions at GenCon to afford it expensive, or even more. All depends on what OP thinks is good for the campaign.

If/when drow are set up as an ancestry, they could be opened, but maybe it will cost you 200 ACP. Sure, you could get one, but you will have to play/GM a lot to get it, and it might take you a couple of years to earn that many points!

If you GM you an unlock the skittermander faster. Plus you get a second chronicle from GM the adventure so you can get a second character.

For PFS2e, the achievement points is where I expect things to become unlocked.

I hope the AcP are worth something cool eventually. I've got around 250 points so far, so I am hoping I can unlock something pretty interesting when they finally (D-Day+70 and counting....) come out.

Whether they are or are not, it may be a moot matter. By the time they are released and then sanctioned everyone should have enough AcP to purchase the boon to play them or any other race/class/archetype.

Please be careful and respectful with general presumptions.

It's this sort of thinking that's not helping my mindset to play ANY 2.

Especially with a dearth of play options that need to be conserved for a new Tengu character.

Depends on all how often people play/gm.

Some people in my area are lucky to play once a month. I myself can only get in a bout once or twice a month on average, lately I have been getting more.

Not knocking you, but not everyone can be as fortunate as you and already closing in on their second glyph.

There’s also a difference between a boon race being available on a limited basis and a race being legal without a boon. Namely that players who like to make tengus, kitsune, nagaji, or whatever is that they tend to make multiple characters of that race. Without knowing what the cost for access is, it’s difficult to say whether limiting behind AcP would be a problem for those players or not.

It would become a 'chicken or the egg?' thing for me if it's 'time-gated' behind a points 'grind'.

If points are required to open up races (hopefully 100% unlock, not single character unlock), then it will be required to use a finite resource (games that can be played) to attain the points needed to play.

Having seen the toxic effects on gaming from such 'grinds', one hopes PFS2 does not go to such a method.

I really hope they do playtesting for new classes and races the way they did for Occult Adventures: Playtest a new class and depending on how many scenarios you played you got a special boon and got to continue playing it - updating the PC to how the class was presented in the book.

But you can be fortunate and have the opportunity to both play and GM PFS2 sessions!

For those of us who are not living in a large metropolitan area, we have the Online Pathfinder Society Lodge. We are running all kinds of PFS and SFS sessions through this lodge. Just go to http://pfschat.com/ and say hi to us on the Discord channel.

There is absolutely no reason for anyone not to be able to play or GM PFS2 sessions unless they just do not have access to the Internet.

That makes quite an assumption about how enjoyable people find playing RPGs online.

As much as I do enjoy it for some characters, it's not for everyone.

Singing goblin? Great online.

Parry/Riposte/Step Up and Strike Swashbuckler with multiple options for reactions? Not so much.

And sometimes I don't want to lock down a character for two months.

Scarab Sages 4/5

While I'll agree online won't be the answer for everyone, I'm pretty sure he mostly meant over virtual table top, which unlike play-by-post doesn't lock a character down and takes about the same amount of time (sometimes less) than an in-person session.

But assuming that everyone has the ability to GM, or a computer capable of playing on a VTT, or even the time to accumulate AcP in any timely fashion is probably a mistake. People have a lot of different situations, and there's not going to be a single solution to all of them.

The question, to me, revolves around how unlocking races is going to work. If it's a purchase once, make unlimited characters of that race, then that's an easier situation to deal with. If it's spend X AcP to get a boon to let you make 1 Tengu, I know a lot of people who are going to feel disappointed by that.

For the races that have been PFS legal for years (Tengu, I think, has been legal since season 4?), having to now spend part of your limited supply of points that you could use to get other boons/options instead is going to feel like a step backwards, and I don't think there's much in the way of avoiding that, unless it's a Common race and given full access from the start.

I said nothing about it being enjoyable. I find it to be quite enjoyable but that's me and many of us who do play online. The assumption is that it is available.

In fact, I find GMing online via Roll20 and Discord to be a wonderful experience. I get to meet people all across the US and the world and play Pathfinder with them. Many socially self-conscious folks prefer to play online. Disabled players who struggle to physically get to live sessions are able to play online. Fellow military members get to play Pathfinder online.

I think I am so fortunate to be blessed with the online region via the Internet whether I play via Roll20 or PbP as well as the two monthly events I organize in the really large area I represent Org Play in.

I don't follow what you're asking.

Going from "I can make as many tengu, kitsune, nagaji, etc." in PF1E to "I can spend some portion of a limited resource to make 1 tengu, kitsune, etc." is a pretty big change, if that is what the situation is going to be. We don't know what the situation is going to be, and what the final system looks like will make a big difference in how it's received, which is the point I made in the section prior to what you quoted.

Bringing up the concerns now may help boost future sales in a tight economy where people (including myself) have to make tough choices on where the limited entertainment budget goes.

Not addressing the concerns will promote a more fiscally conservative response from me, at least...

Scarab Sages 4/5

I should clarify that while we don’t know what the situation will be for sure, we have been told that spending AcP is one way that we will get access to Uncommon options. So it’s not conjecture to assume that if a race is Uncommon, we will likely have to spend AcP to get access to it. They’ve pretty much told us that. What we don’t know is if all Uncommon races will be available that way, how much it will cost, whether that will be a onetime cost or per character, or things like that. Whether or not a race will be Uncommon is really out of the PFS team’s control, unless they want to make a campaign rule. So as weird as it seems that goblins will have gone from practically nonexistent in society to widely available, but tengu will likely go from widely available to locked behind a boon/AcP, that certainly seems like the situation.

We could hope that whenever regional access to Uncommon options gets sorted out that it might change that. Since the Lost Omens World Guide still isn’t in AR, it’s unclear how that is going to work, either.

I'm hoping for something markedly different: more like the way it was done in Starfinder for SCOM. As in, you can bring playtest characters in as a sort of self-built pregens for just one session. This allows people to try out more of the higher level content, so that generates a bigger spectrum of data. It also lowers the stakes for getting your character creation choices right. You can try different builds for the same new class every time too.

as for title of the topic. apparently no. hard cover is out and additional resources is not updated. odds are they wont update it when pdf comes out on wednesday either. we might be lucky and have new stuff be legal before next year as is how paizo works

1 person marked this as a favorite.

lol yup figures. we're probably going to have to wait for a literal christmas miracle or new years present for any new legal stuff in society. 1e is still waiting on content apparently so might as well just play whatever in society (within reason) until paizo decides to put any effort into updating their online guide then rebuild if decisions ever get made.

with only 2 repeatable scenarios and only core being legal on top of no evil stuff in society (which isnt even fun cuz its society anyway) might as well enjoy the stuff you buy until they say otherwise. not like they can really track what race, archeype, or spells you use.

until stuff starts getting added to the additional resources, might as well play whatever your gm allows as if youre doing society home games and dont travel.
