Dangerous Sorcery ?

Rules Discussion

The Feat:
Dangerous Sorcery: Feat 1, Sorcerer trait.
Your legacy grants you great destructive power. When you Cast a Spell from your spell slots, if the spell deals damage and doesn't have a duration, you gain a status bonus to that spell's damage equal to the spell's level

So, my Question is: If you cast a spell like magic missile or a similar spell that fires multiple bolts / missiles ... Does the damage apply to the spell once or per bolt / missile ?

Grand Lodge

No, it's an amount of extra damage added to the total amount of damage dealt from the spell.

Magic Missile, which only targets 1 creature, doesn't get good use out of Dangerous Sorcery. But Fireball, which can hit a ton of creatures, makes the feat quite worthwhile.

Magic Missile wrote:
You send a dart of force streaking toward a creature that you can see. It automatically hits and deals 1d4+1 force damage. For each additional action you use when Casting the Spell, increase the number of missiles you shoot by one, to a maximum of three missiles for 3 actions. You choose the target for each missile individually. If you shoot more than one missile at the same target, combine the damage before applying bonuses or penalties to damage, resistances, weaknesses, and so forth.

Magic Missile can target multiple enemies. However, the damage bonus applies only once per enemy, as it states in the spell.

Magic Missile was commented on during the playtest. It's once per creature, even if you use all the missiles against a single target.

So, if you shoot a level 3 magic missile at 3 different creatures you get +3 dmg per creature?

Sovereign Court

No, +1damage per creature for a total of +3.

If Draco's comment is correct, then yes, and I recall reading a similar comment myself, though sadly I can't find a source now to back that up. Making it apply per creature would also mean you wouldn't have to fiddle with figuring out which enemy took which damage, and removing that sort of bookkeeping seems in line with how PF2 works.

That is correct.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

...For a level 1 MM. A level 3 does +3 per creature, just like a level 3 fireball does +3 per creature.

Found it. Thanks Reddit.

Merp. That's what I get for only looking at the Target part of the spell. I was wondering why it was different from 1e.

What a nasty feat! I like it.

Shame it doesn't help cantrips, but I suppose we can't have everything ... especially when it'd be that good.

That'd just make Electric Arc even better than it already is...

You know for whatever reason I never use that cantrip. It's been produce flame for me all the way so far.

Sovereign Court

Ah whoops. Read that as a 3 action magic missile.

This still makes no sense to me. So if I fireball 17 people they each take +3 damage from a level 3 fireball, but if i magic missile 3 people with a level 3 magic missile, they only take +1 dmg each ???

This feat needs some serious errata

No, they would each take 3 extra damage because your MM is level 3. If it were level 1 then they'd take 1, or Heck if you heightened your MM to level 8 or 9 you could zap whole hordes of mooks for 1d4 +9 or +10 if you wanted.

Basically any target who is hit by your spell takes the extra damage, but they do so only once. No +6 or +9 damage if you hit someone with two or three of your level 3 MMs.
