Better relic for murder mystery

Homebrew and House Rules

Current relic - Ring of Mindshielding.

Looking for better artefacts/relics/objects ideas that would hide the true identity of characters from others. Something that might get someone killed for selling/having it. Please note this is a home made murder mystery scenario and after running it today there was conjecture on the value of the relic. Scenario is designed for lvl 3-7, I made it so I could run different levels of this.

I can not ask my usual group for advice as this majorly affects the scenario when played and some say they would like to play it. Players today said the relic was not worth fighting someone for it. They could come up with no better ideas.

Second Soul: This ring appears to be nothing more than a minor Ring of Protection. It does indeed give a +1 deflection bonus when worn.

However, the ring is an insidious device. If a humanoid dies while wearing this ring, their soul is trapped within the ring until a new humanoid soul replaces it. When a humanoid wears the ring, they transform to match the appearance the contained soul had in life. The wearer appears as the trapped soul would of pictured themselves. They also detect as that person to all magic. Spells that read the memory of the wearer get thoughts from the soul contained in the ring from the time that humanoid was alive. The wearer's voice sounds like the contained soul did in life.

This gives a bonus of +10 to disguise and bluff to pass yourself off as the trapped soul.

If the current wearer dies the soul contained in the ring is released when the new soul occupies the ring. If another item, effect or creature is attempting to fight for the soul, the ring will let it go and keep the current soul. A soul contained in the ring may not be resurrected. Not even a wish will release a contained soul from this artifact.
