A Few Quick Animal Companion Questions

Advice

1) Dire Collar on an AC. This is activated by the master, correct?
2) Is it a standard action?
3) Can an AC be taught a trick to activate its own dire collar or drink a buff potion?
4) A different Tiefling PC wants to know if he can wear and activate a dire collar since he can't use a potion of enlarge person. Does that work?

1) It's controlled by whoever put the collar on the animal.

Dire Collar wrote:
This leather collar resizes to fit almost any size of creature. Once per day on command, the creature that fastened the dire collar to the animal can cause that animal to grow larger and more bestial. The collar’s fastener must be within 30 feet of the animal to do so. The animal gains the benefits of an enlarge person spell (despite the normal targeting restrictions of that spell) for 1 minute.

So, it doesn't have to be the master. In theory, if the animal is capable of putting it on themselves they would have to activate themselves.

2) yes.

Magic Items (Command Word) wrote:
Activating a command word magic item is a standard action and does not provoke attacks of opportunity.

3) IIRC the general consensus is that yes as a trick, you can teach an animal companion to use a specific magic item. This allows them to activate and use it when it makes sense to do so and/or when you give the command for them to do so.

4) Only if the tiefling counts as an animal. A normal tiefling would not count as an animal and so the answer is no. Coincidentally, since the magic item calls out animals specifically, magical beasts are also unable to use the collar, since they aren't animals either.

Silver Crusade

Here's an Order of the Stick Comic in which Scruffy the cat, Animal Companion to Belkar the Halfling Ranger, saves the entire party and literally the entire cosmos by activating a magic item. It's a Protection from Evil amulet on it's person. It's person is under Vampiric Domination mind control. Vampires have just defeated the PCs.

No. Tell him to get a Fairy Cap instead. 250 gp, enlarge OR reduce for 10 minutes.

I had never seen the Fairy Cap before. That is hilarious. He will be addicted to shrooms in no time!
