The theme of The summon monster spell from 1st editions as that a wizard or cleric was summoning an extra planer entity. Why venture completely away from this and not allowing wizards to summon planer creatures from the outer planes

I loved the feel of the wizard villains being able to summon those demons and Devils. It fits with the lore of wizards from so much literature

Doesn’t make much sense to me

Help me understand

In PF2 it seems summoning demons and angels and other extraplanar horrors is covered by the Planar Binding ritual. Clerics get Summon Celestial or Fiend, but wizards are stuck with finding the ritual and hoping it works.

The summons are very in line with the new essences assigned to the traditions. Arcane is logical, systematic investigation of the physical and mental, so they get to summon constructs (magical engineering), dragons (highly categorized and smart magical entities of the world), etc. Celestials and fiends are the end result of souls and reflect the battle for souls, so they stick to the divine list that covers the intersection of spiritual and life instincts. And so on.

As a retcon it’s painful, but it makes sense in the new, better designed magical foundation.
