Recruitment

People expressed interest in Masks: A New Generation.
This is a narrative driven game using the Powered by the Apocalypse system.
It focuses on how a team of young superheroes see themselves and the world around them (With adults trying to ruin their fun at every turn - those bastards).

THIS THREAD DOES NOT GUARANTEE THAT I WILL RUN A GAME!
But I wanted somewhere where people interested in running/playing that is not the recruitment thread of an already full game. With that said I might be interested in GMing/Co-GMing or playing.

So lets spitball some ideas and see what happens...

I’m down! I’m in another Masks game right now, but I’m definitely down for more. We’ve even got a clever roundtable-ish GM system going on in which everybody is in charge of scenes they invent or that are relevant to their character. It’s pretty fun!

Dark Archive

I'm unfamiliar with the system, but I have the rules and I learn quickly. I have a character concept and I would be interested in giving this a go!

I'm definitely interested. I was quite disappointed that the other was just necroed. As for ideas. We could be a class at a training academy for young heroes.

Hmm. Do you have something in mind for how Co-GMing might work?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Well it could work multiple ways, the way I was mainly think of was everyone has a PC and whenever someone has an idea for a story arc the set it up and the team goes through whatever it is.

They way I like to think of Masks is in the terms of a comic book. So you have an overall story but one issue is about this and another about that but they all tie together (and sometimes they don't, alien invaders that have nothing to do with everything else our heros have on their plates but they have to deal with it just the same). So one player would GM an issue or two then some else would.

This is almost exactly what we have going on in my current Masks squad, and it works really well. If we're doing something like this I am even more in than I was before. :)

I'd totes be down, especially since i accidentally necro'd the old thread lol.

I think that's the setting of one of the supplement books, phoenix academy, i think is what it's called? I've got ideas for delinquent, Janus, and Soldier characters that i'm pretty excited about. I think the Janus+Soldier more so than the delinquent. A delinquent would fit more than a soldier or janus in a school setting, Janus especially since they are kind of doing the normal thing when going to superschool.

I think maybe we could do a more classic 'teen titan'(show-esc) setting, we may not have a giant Building the shape of our team name's first letter, but it's a comfy place where we can retreat and relax at while not directly heroing and plan out our next steps. This is really easy to do if someone is a protoge.

Dark Archive

I suppose that I could commit to some part-time GMing.

Dark Archive

My idea is for an artificial life form that has only recently been awakened and is still learning about humanity.

So the newborn or outsider?

And doing a X-Men style school does have problems it's very doable probably just might be difficult with the Janus and maybe the Soldier

Mine can be done in Nova, Delinquent, and I think it was called bruiser? That I know off the top of my hat. I didn't read everything.

See, I wasn't up for co DMing but if all we're doing is setting up story arcs as we come up with them. I could commit to that.

I'd be very interested in this! I was in a real-time Masks game a while back that was a lot of fun, I'd love to do it again. I'd also be happy to take part in round-robin style GMing, and can probably whip up a concept for almost any playbook.

Janus doesn't automatically go too well with the Phoenix Academy/My Hero Academia super-school setting, but it really depends how often you leave campus.

A setup like... that Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon could work pretty well. Teen-Spidey's enrolled in a SHIELD Academy alongside other trainees. But since he's already an established hero he's got a lot more of the Secret Identity thing still going on, and he makes much more of a deal of his life outside of superheroing.

So people who didn't know that your Janus was a cape might just think they go to 'Private School' depending on how secretive Phoenix Academy ended up being.

***

Soldier I actually think works really well :-)

One of the go-to examples in the book is actually Cyclops back in 60's X-Men - someone who is entirely focused on the organization as a whole and has a very mission-focused, tactical way of looking at things. An AEGIS operative could be sent to Phoenix Academy for additional training, (or even to serve as a spy on the organization...)

***

Also hi! I'm definitely going to munch popcorn and watch, and we'll see if I get inspired :-p

I will say that the idea of a super-school appeals since it's a very unique kind of setting.

Bull. We don't all have too co gm, I just thought 2 heads are better than one, 5 heads are better than 2.

I also want everyone remember when thinking up concepts that the game isn't about beating up bad guys, its about beating up bad guys and dealing with the repercussions. It's awesome to throw a bad guy through a building, it's less so when your mom is yelling at you for it.

Also if we could limit it to no more than have the party with unassisted flight and only one orphan (unless someone is playing the joined and they are siblings)

Silver Crusade

I have previously played champions so this sparked my interest.

I have a few young style heroes that i've used previously that might fit.

Piston Joe - old style looking power armour that looks like it's steam powered but really is animated by Joe's power.

Disco Inferno or just Inferno when older - he's nuts, fun dancer that has fire powers, stupidly heroic protector type.

I forgotten the last ones name, let's go with shell, a bit like venom he has a symbiotic suit or shell. A bit brooding and harsh, he is bolstered and enlightened by his team mates.

I don’t have the rules, but I would love to join in. There’s always the ‘Young Justice’ setup instead of ‘Teen Titans’. Everyone has their own secret identity but they gather together under an adult guide/mentor.
I glanced at the playbooks in the other recruitment thread. I was wondering if there was a way to combine them? Like an outsider with nova powers instead of tech?

@spacefurry: Not really, but all Playbooks have the ability to gain other Playbook’s moves through a particular advancement.

Something I feel I should help clear up here though is that the Playbooks are not designed to define your mechanical identity. They do that yes, but they are meant to give a rough outline of your character’s narrative identity; what trope they most closely resemble, what role in the team dynamic they fill, what their likely arcs will be, etc. If you have a particular character in mind, try to pick the best narrative fit instead of mechanical one. :)

Outsider - You’re not from here. Your home is an amazing place, full of beauty and wonder. But there’s something to them, something special that you’re missing back home. Something…human. So yeah, you’ll be hanging around. At least for now.

Nova - You’re a font of power. Channel it, and you can remake the world into exactly what you want. Unleash it, and you can do miracles. It’s wonderful...and terrifying. Lose control for even a second, and other people get hurt.

You could play an Alien Nova and just have assimilated to Earth, or you could play and Outsider with blasty abilities but lacking the Nova's Burn and Flares

Also you could start as an Outsider and switch to Nova after enough advancements.

Owner - Gator Games & Hobby

For example: in Young Justice (the cartoon), Ms. Martian is definitely an Outsider in Season One. A lot of her arcs are about fitting into this exciting new world, while trying to hide the extent of her alienness from those close to her.

In Season Two though, I'd say she's switched to the Nova playbook since a lot of her story centers around the effects of her constantly unleashing her powers in destructive ways, and relying on them to fix problems that they really aren't suited to.

Dark Archive

I think I would play my character as a Newborn. That Playbook seems tailor-made for my conception of the character.

After some thought soldier in a school setting would be pretty easy, junior agents of A.E.G.I.S could totally get in as a student. Just say their mission is to spy on folks.

I think if we do school setting i'll run either delinquent or soldier.
TT/YJ setting I could do Deli-Jan-Sol or even transformed if others REALLY want those roles lol.

Delinquent would be an older girl had her powers for a while, i'm thinking Teleportation and illusions(do ya'll think illusions can me sound based too?) Bit of a hot shot who thinks they can take on anyone but deep down understands that their powers are very much a support role.

Janus would be a younger boy compared to the majority of the group, recently got their powers and is trying to figure out where they sit in the world. Their parents are both secret villains and they don't know. Could be an interesting villain and plot hook.

Soldier- Middle/older aged boy, him and his sister were both part of a nano-machine enhancement program. Younger sister lost control of the nanites and they now pilot her body around as a villain

The transformed is hugely TBD

So things that seem decided:
-Super School
-Multi-GMing
-WhtKnt decided on the Newborn Playbook. (Is your name short for White Knight or What Knot?)

Wilhim - Nova/Delinquent
Azil - Delinquent/Janus/Soldier
Spacefurry - Outsider/Nova
ElbowtotheFace - I am thinking Transformed
Helix - Harbinger (or other)

Still very interested here. If we're going super-school, I'd love to play a Harbinger... Chip on his shoulder, and things made even worse by the fact that in this time, the super-authorities are insisting he get training and oversight.

But, if you'd prefer I not use it since it's still in playtesting (I believe), I could go with something else instead. Possibly a Reformed, but maybe something else... Bulls and Proteges are fun.

Harbinger is in Unbound I believe

I wouldn't say anything I'm doing is determined. I gotta go through the ideas a bit more for my blaster/bruiser combo.

Dark Archive

White Knight. My full title is the Knight of the White Rose. It's my personal avatar if you will, in my long-running Forgotten Realms campaign (it represents the ideal of what I would be in a fantasy world).

I should have separated the list of people and playbooks they mentioned from the other stuff, I think WhtKnt is the only one really dialed in as far as playbook goes.

Are we locking in on Super School?

I’ve got an idea for literally every playbook, and I’m willing to play any of them, but I will say the Scion, the Brain, and the Janus are my faves. I by no means call dibs, if y’all have a good idea for one of those three don’t let me stop you from trying it! But I will defer to one of them if it isn’t taken. Anybody want to hear my pitches?

If we are locking in the school (which is very interesting to me since I haven’t really played around with the pre-made settings yet), might I suggest on top of our hero and villain submissions, we also create some NPCs for the school? Like teachers, clubs, pre-establishes friends, etc.? I think that would really help flesh things out.

Thanks for clearing that up a little. I am leaning towards 'alien outsider' then. The only 'alien tech' I would think my hero would need would be something to hide his alien appearance and maybe some way of communicating with home. Otherwise, he's an energy manipulator/blaster.
Maybe a bit angsty, having to hide his true form, and feeling a little lonely but tries to hide these by taking interest in many human activities.

Villian hook - Creepshow (a villain I came up with for a comic idea I never got around to putting to use)
A flesh-manipulator, creating homunculi/chimera and manipulating flesh while hiding in plain sight.

NPC(s) - Natasha Carmichael, P.E. teacher and Shaman/Medicine Woman
German/Native American heritage
Grew up an Army brat
More to come as I think of stuff...

Jean Downer - Freshman, Techno-mancer
Lost both parents during fight between two supers
Ditto...

Hey, all! I'm the GM in the other recruitment thread that unwittingly generated the interest in you all starting another Masks game. Which is cool! I'm also playing in the co-GM game that Blue Symbiote linked to.

Now, I have in no way the inclination to DM another Masks game. But, I have an idea for a Doomed that's been rattling around in my head for some time. So if there's room for a sixth? Seventh? However, please don't let me bump someone else out of the game. I've got a couple Masks games going strong, so I'd rather someone else get the chance to play.

The Doomed:

An ordinary teen is tricked by an evil collector of magical trinkets into freeing a genie from a lamp -- therefore becoming the new genie. He is now bound to the lamp and doomed to become a servant obeying the whims of whoever owns the lamp. But his powers are incomplete and still developing, so he has a measure of free will, but the more he uses his powers, the more he learns and closer he comes to being a full genie. His doom is the reality that at some point he'll come fully into that power and become utterly subservient to the lamp's owner -- someone that the collector fully intends to become.

Nemesis: The curio collector (maybe backed up by the freed genie)
Sanctuary: The lamp itself

As we go through Playbook backstory questions we will fill in the npcs. Like the Transformed asks 'who is helping you outside the team's so those are good prompts.

I think we will lock in school, because that will give everyone a jumping off point for playbook selection.

Okay, if we're really doing this...

Meet Angel.

History:
ANGEL, the Autonomous Neophyte Genetically Enhanced Lifeform, was "born" in the labs of GeneTech Industries. In attempting to create a new and sophisticated robot, they accidentally created something... else.

Personality:
ANGEL is innocent and naive. While she is as intelligent as any 16-year-old, she has the personality of a five-year-old. She is intensely curious, always desiring to learn more about human culture, but her naivete often gets her into trouble.

Powers:
ANGEL is incredibly resilient and possesses the strength of 10 adult male humans. She also has the ability to create solid-light projections that look and feel real.

Look:
To all external appearances, ANGEL is a Caucasian female human. Only a thorough medical exam that included x-rays would reveal otherwise. She sweats, her hair grows, and she even bleeds. She has the complete range of human emotions, but a very logical mind. She can feel pain, can cry, and will grow older, just as a human woman would. She must consume food for energy and she must recharge by "sleeping" just like a human. She stands five feet, five inches, and looks to weigh no more than 120 lbs. In actuality, her weight is closer to 250 lbs. Her hair is fiery red and her eyes are green. She has no costume as yet.

Villain:
Dr. John Madison was dismissed from GeneTech for performing unsanctioned experiments. He considers ANGEL his intellectual property and uses his evil genius to try to abduct her and turn her to do his bidding. He is brilliant and also possesses an array of devices that he has constructed.

I'll do up a proper alias for her tomorrow.

I'm trying to get on my old roleplay website to try and get my information for this character. I played her in a teen titans next generation kinda thing. I'll probably tone down her origin for this but originally she was kind of in the middle of an apocalyptic event not unlike what happened in the game Infamous. It wiped out her town leaving her with superpowers. Unfortunately she didn't have full control of her radiation generation at first and kinda f%&#ed up an entire apartment building. I'll change that since while the character was good natured, that's some dark f~&%ing s%&#.

Cool we're locked in school, i'll toss my stuff for the deli and soldier when i get home Janus is free for anyone to take because i'm not sure how i'd incorporate it to the setting. At this point i'm leaning more towards the deli but we'll see how the teams shaping up.

And here she is... ANGEL!

*facepalm* I meant ‘alien nova’ like was suggested.

Concept for

Joshua Prowell:

Humanoid feline with black fur, black hair and green eyes.
A reluctant exchange student from Ka’jita, in the Shi’feln Empire.
Chosen by lottery amongst numerous empowered children within the empire as a gesture of good faith between the alien empire and representatives of the school on behalf of the Earth. Joshua is resentful towards the empire and his family for having to come to Earth, leaving behind everything, and everyone, he knew. His resentment towards the school and the Earth are simply him projecting his anger at the only ones in range. He realizes this and tries to temper it by learning more about human society and cultures, but many times wonders if humans are actually worth the effort.

When I get home today I’ll make a more proper entry and alias.

Slate the Transformed:

Real Name: Scott Slater
Hero Name: Slate
Look: Male, White, Strange Eyes, Rocky Flesh, No Costume
Abilities: Impenetrable Armor, Inhuman Might
Moves: Not Human Enough, Unstoppable, Wish I Could Be
*Backstory*
• Who were you before?
- Average boy, likes sports and video games.
• When did you change? What caused it?
- Summer before high school, flare of cosmic energy hit an old rock quarry where he and some friends were swimming.
• Who, outside of the team, is helping you undq
erstand your new body?
- Teachers at the school, mainly Nadezhda Devyatova a Russian art teacher with 4 arms and eyes.
• Why don’t you just try to hide yourself away?
- At 9 feet tall a weighing near a ton hiding would be extremely difficult, plus he feels trapped enough in his rocky body locking himself away in a room would drive him insane.
• Why do you care about the team?
- The team keeps him connected to humanity.
*Labels*
Danger: +1, Freak: +3, Savior: +1, Superior: -1, Mundane: -1

When our team first came together... We drew attention and ire from plenty during the fight. One important person in particular now hates and fears us. Who is it?

Relationships:
___________________ comforted you when you were at your lowest.
___________________ knew you before you changed.

Influence:
You try not to care what other people think, even if you can’t shut everyone out. Give Influence to one teammate.

Villain:

Jett Wraith
Shadowy Cosmic Sorcerer who was attempting to use the flare that struck the quarry to power a spell that would cast Halcyon City into darkness, but Slate and his friends presence disrupted it when the energies gave them superpowers.

Personality:

Quiet and somber, Slate is still dealing with adapting to his new body and powers.

WhtKnt - A.N.G.E.L. - Newborn
Spacefurry - Joshua Prowell - Nova

Stalwart - Doomed
Helix - Harbinger
Blue Symbiote - Any
Wilhim - Any
Cwethan - Watching and waiting for inspiration
Tharasiph - ??
Azil - Delinquent/Soldier

Owner - Gator Games & Hobby

I'll keep lurking, but it looks like you've got a pretty full group already! Like Stal, I'm in two other campaigns and quite willing to step back in favor of others :-)

I was just making a running list of people who posted and you and Stal both did so I included you two

As I was typing a better sheet for Joshua in a new profile, I realized there were questions that I would have to ask to fill in details, like...

How long have they been a team?
How infamous is the group?
How influential are heroes in the world?
What are the personalities of the others on the team?

...these are just the first few that came to mind. I'll keep filling in what I can to start with. Just figured we could toss around some ideas.

I may be totally off base here, but if we're doing super school, then for all we know we probably aren't an established team, so much as we have worked together on occasion, if at all. I know one of the gameplay/story assumptions Masks makes is that we're a team who've already come together, but I could easily see that being played with in a setting like this.

As for personalities, that obviously comes down to what the other players come up with. I'm still cracking on mine if Harbinger is good to go. That said, I don't have the final version, so if it's significantly different from the playtest PDF that I do have, I might be a bit off on some of the specifics.

I believe the assumption is that the team had just formed and the start of game play is shortly after the "When our team first came together" part of character creation, your first two questions will likely be covered here. Characters may know each other before joining the team, usually as part of the "Relationships" portion of the playbook.

Silver Crusade

As enthusiastic as I am I just don't have the time to learn a new system atm. So have a blast all

Sorry for the long wait guys, i'm awful with names so i'm trying to fill out the students i'll be throwing at the wall alongside the characters, which is a pain with a 12 hour work day.

Hmm...
Is it bad I'm reconsidering my character? :p
Still what to do a Nova, but maybe magic instead of alien?
Less complicated, and less like Starfire now that I look at it.

Yeah
