HeroLab Online was horrible when I started using it, but it's much better now. I kind of hope it succeeds, because although having to pay for it regularly kinda sucks, the benefit is that it means there's at least a small number of people working on improving it every day as their jobs.
I haven't tried Pathbuilder because I don't have an Android phone.
PCGen is "Running out of volunteers" to work on its code, and having looked at the code I can see why.

Does Hero Lab online offer the customization options Classic has, such as adding our own new feats and ancestries or items? Or the GM options like Tactical Console or encounter builder?

There is an emulator for the PC called BlueStacks. I haven't tried it myself yet, but have seen positive comments on Reddit. As well, I believe the author is considering a PC-based program to release via Steam, but no idea as to time frame and such.

No it doesn't. Custom content is on their roadmap, but they have yet to figure out how they want it to go, so it's probably not going to arrive within the next year, probably longer.
You can add almost anything that already exists to any character, however, which lets you cludge together quite a bit.

Well, except Pokemon GO. :P

My guess would be that the game requires your device to be mobile and a PC isn't in the same way a phone is so there is little motivation to fix it: I JUST ran into an similar issue with shin megami tensei dx2 and a feature that requires using the camera but it's a minor and easily avoided issue there and I wasn't planning to walk around with my gaming laptop to use it anyway. :P

Oh, you could run PoGO on Bluestacks for a while (albeit I had issues throwing pokeballs, the game would immediately exit when I did so, but I suspect it was some kind of macro in the Bluestacks OS). Its that PoGO does a complex detection scheme to insure that the game is running on a real device with non-spoofed location validation to prevent cheating.
Because PoGO makes these checks, cheaty-players wanted Bluestacks to update so that those checks could be spoofed, and Bluestacks said "No, we're not going to do that."
Its not a technical problem, but a tacit agreement between Niantic and Bluestacks to not allow players to cheat at the game.

Its not a technical problem
Could be? I have no personal experience with that game as I never thought that dragging a laptop around to various locations was a viable plan of action even if it would/could have worked. It really doesn't matter though as this really doesn't have anything to do with how truly awful HLO is or how it's alternatives work on bluestacks.

I did know about that. But I don't really want to jump through those hoops just to hand the character generation space to this guy.

I wouldn't call it "hoops": you just have to download bluestacks, run it and download pathbuilder through the integrated googlestore. After that, whenever you need to run it you just start bluestacks and click on the icon for the program. If this is "hoops", whatever program you use will require "hoops".
PS: You might not even need to download bluestacks as it might already be there. It was already pre-loaded into my computer before I got it.

Ugh, gave it another shot to have a clearer character sheet for a player and didn't feel like doing it by hand.
Turns out herolab online can't even handle non weapon magical armour or gear yet. Been two years since the playtest, being able to put bracers of missile deflection on a character shouldn't be that big of an ask.
And removing items generally has to be done with selling for zero... Shame you cannot sell forumlas for zero.
What a joke.

?
Equipment -> Gear -> Treasure -> + -> Worn Items -> Bracers of Missile Deflection
Magic equipment being lumped under Treasure is probably just because that's what the rulebook did.

TGG: It's glaringly apparent that you're having problems that other users are not. You should really reach out to LWD support for direct help and clarity, some your gripes, while understandable, are incorrect and others seem like bugs such as the Formula Sale issue.
They have a support desk for a reason.

You can have an item, unequiped. But if you don't want to have it appear on the character, you're either dropping it on the ground or selling it.
And you can certainly equip Bracers of Missile Deflection, I just did it.

Problems? problem, singular. Unless you are going to argue that my main issues of not being able to add custom content is a problem that only I have -laughs-. It is a problem, one that I reacted poorly to at 2am in the morning and soon found the solution to (but couldn't edit my post here). However it is still a glaring flaw in the layout.
Having it listed under Treasure isn't great, especially since they don't follow the same convention in the weapons and armour sections.
I was going to bring up another issue I found last night but unfortunately that will have to wait as they are "Hero Lab ™ Online is experiencing unplanned downtime.", bad luck for sure.
The major flaws I have mentioned have been to do with pricing, downtime (like above), chunkiness of the user interface and primarily the lack of ability to author custom content (items, spells, races, classes, feats and so on). Leaving it as a husk of what it needs to be as a RPG character creator, and a husk of what herolab classic was (even if it came with its own jank).

Anybody knows why skills are not in the character exports?
And is there a function where i can export characters to other tools like VTTs? Or dice for VTT like D&Dbeyond can for roll20?
I have to agree, compared to HLC and D&Dbeyond HLO doesn't seem a comfortable.
Hopefully this will evolve - a lot!
Themetricsystem |
The Statblock generation method only puts out the Skills a Character has Training in the same manner as any other short-form statblock. If you don't have training all you do is add the Ability Score Modifier to the Skill check.
VTT support and comprehensive exports are one of the big things they're working on presently, by popular demand, according to the LWD devs posts on their own forums. Apparently they have internal builds where it's already at least partially functional but I guess they want to put it through the wringer before releasing it into the wild. They don't usually come out to talk about big upcoming features in advance like that either so I think that means we should be able to expect it sooner rather than later.

Does anyone know how to take a Night's Rest in HLO? I see there may be a button, but I can't find any documentation of where that is.
On the Play tab, it's in the very first box, Profile, below your ability scores.

For what it's worth, I got tired of paying the subscription and switched to Pathbuilder.
And for those who may not know (because this thread suggests otherwise) Pathbuilder is an app for android, but also exist in a web version accessible from any web enabled device. I don't know when the web version was released, as this thread implies it didn't exist (or the writer didn't know it existed) because they complained they didn't have an Android phone. I mention only so anyone else who is interested wont be discouraged. I think Pathbuilder is 80+% of the product features of HeroLab, but only cost a one time fee of $6 (as of the time of this post) and that's to unlock all features. The free version can do a lot as long as you don't want familiars or companions.
