Hunt Prey - Do I need an initial visual to Track at +2?

Hunt Prey
You designate a single creature as your prey and focus your attacks against that creature. You must be able to see or hear the prey, or you must be tracking the prey during exploration.

...

Does the "or" mean that I do not need to get an initial visual?

Ex. If I learn about a foe (or ally in need of rescue?) third party - such as from another person, a rumor, as a result of research, etc - can I "designate" them as my "prey" as part of exploration mode and begin tracking them using the +2 bonus?

Or do I need to physically see them first?

If the answer is "no, you do not need an initial visual", does it follow that if I am Tracking my prey, that if I find them, and we move into encounter mode, I do not need to spend an action to designate them, because they are already my prey?

Thanks!

If you are using Survival to track a foe during exploration, you don't need to spend an action on that foe in the ensuing encounter mode.

That is my reading as well.

But can I begin hunting a prey I have neither seen nor heard, but have become aware of through other means?

Ex. If a scenario has us hunting a particular person, who is described to us, may I designate them based off of that description alone?

Ex. If a scenario has us tracking down "lost pathfinders" may I designate one of them as my prey based off of a description alone?

I believe it specifically means you have used the Track activity.

Certainly.

But the question is can I Track a foe (or ally) using the +2 bonus without having seen or heard them first?

If the answer is yes, then the +2 to Track is practically universal, which I feel suits the Ranger's theme generally, but I still wanted to ask, as the language is unclear to me. Specifically the use of the word "or", as noted in my first post.

In order to be tracking something in the first place you would need to succeed at the initial check. But after that you could designate and recieve the bonus for subsequent checks.

That would be my reading as well. You have to have a hint on your target - either by visual confirmation or by succeeding at tracking it. After all seeing the target might also require a Perception check. After that you can use hunt target.

Thanks all, that clarifies it for me!

Yes, you have three options. See, hear or track. Then it's your prey.
