How does someone who wants to get more involved in organized play advance from VA to VL?

The Exchange 5/5 Venture-Lieutenant, Texas—Dallas & Ft. Worth aka Belafon

Talk to your local Venture-Captain.

If there is a need for more VLs in the area and he or she feels like you are a good representative for the Society as a whole, they can recommend you to the Organized Play team for a VL position.

Your VC can also discuss with you what additional duties would be expected of you as a VL.

Really? I thought we had to fight a VL one-on-one in a no-holds-barred cage match to claim their title. I was even waiting until Jack had his leg in a big old cast/boot so I could quickly get all the way to VC!

I too was robbed my glory and promotion. I was cheated when my VL snuck away in the dead of night at the end of 2018 (he got transferred to the San Antonio area).

To manage expectations - even when your VC sends multiple requests for your promotion it'll remain pending for a year or more (and the application may get lost more than once).

Paizo Organized Play is notoriously dysfunctional - especially when it comes to officer promotions. I was first put in for VL last spring and I'm still waiting - and I have been told by people in multiple regions that this is typical.

The last email I received on it was from December 2018 saying it'll hopefully be processed by holiday break. That was 8 months ago. When I talked to another GM about this at PaizoCon she told me she's been waiting for 3 years for her VL status to be processed - and the familiar drama of it being repeatedly lost and resubmitted multiple times.

So if you do go for it, expect it to be a lengthy process and don't take it personally.

That seems viable under local differences, and if you have already beaten the VL you want to replace there is likely an opening ^^

Reasonable alternatives include other contest like competitive eating, auditing level 18 characters and speed reporting an entire convention by just using your nose.

While this is true, they are taking steps to address this bottle neck and we can expect to this to begin to move more quickly.

Also, please remember that bad mouthing Paizo and the Organized team is a violation of the forum rules. I for one don't need to see these type of snide remarks and I have flagged your post.

Not entirely true. When I submit someone for a VO appointment/promotion, it is effective immediately. VO promotions do not require Paizo's approval and in point of fact, Paizo is not part of the volunteer management. That is a function of the Organized Play Foundation (OPF). The only part that is delayed is how long it takes for (1) their name to appear in the coordinator's list and (2) how long before they begin to receive the free PDF products associated with their level of officer. For the purposes of they activities, they are immediately empowered to portray themselves as a member of our leadership team. Keep in mind, this could vary from region to region so check with your RVC to determine when they consider your appointment/promotion to be effective.

In the case of (1) we are working on moving, or at least mirroring the coordinator's list on the OPF website where we have more control over it being updated. As such, new appointments and promotions should appear much more quickly.

(2) still requires Paizo to tag the user account so they receive the downloads when they are added to the database. Unfortunately, we do not have control over that aspect and therefore it can take some time to be processed. VOs should work with their leadership if they are having difficulty accessing the scenarios.

As I was just about to make a post regarding this, is there any news on when that is going to be updated? Or is it something they will look into now GenCon is finished?

Unfortunately the list on Paizo is pretty out of date, so would be nice to see/celebrate all the new VOs who have made the list!

That's a nice sentiment but functionally untrue.

Case in point: I put the pending VL title on the PaizoCon 2019 volunteer sign-up with a note that it was still in processing, and received an email that the VL status wasn't considered because it wasn't processed yet - nor was I invited to the VL/VC dinner or any other VO functions.

I'm not addressing here who's fault this is or how to fix it, I'm only giving realistic expectations to someone interested in VL status so when their application sits untouched for a year or more they don't take it personally - like I was until learning how broad the problem actually is.

As I said, there are regional differences. I was not directly involved in the organizing of PaizoCon so I cannot comment on their practice. I can only say that my statement is (or was until I retired) true in the Great Lakes and at Gen Con. You will need to consult your RVC to determine their specific practices.

There's a reason I don't get involved with leadership functions, and this may be part of it. That, and a total lack of time to make it happen due to work commitments.
