Troops?

So looking to run "Ironfang Invasion" AP as intro in Second edition...there is interest in playing goblins and bring about change :) I did receive the physical books from my subscription (been poring through them) but it seems the "Troop" mechanic is not really available yet. Any idea how to handle this in Second Edition? Thanks in advance for any help

Troops are scaled up swarms in PF1. So just make similar adjustments to PF2’s swarm rules.

Silver Crusade

Or make up something that actually works. It would be just about impossible to come up with worse rules than the PF1 troop rules :-(.

Sorry, I loathe those rules with a fiery passion. The goal of those rules should have been to make fights against large numbers playable (mostly this was a success) while at the same time making it kinda sort of a little bit feeling like the same result that one would have gotten if one used more time with the regular rules. It is in the last that the rules totally and utterly fail. For AC to be totally irrelevant when fighting a bunch of opponents armed with weapons was a very, very bad rules choice.

And yes, my first introduction to them was with a character who had spent a LOT of resources to have a high AC. Why do you ask? ;-)

Lets use the ffswrpg rules for minion groups instead

(trying a quick conversion here)

Start with a unit which has relative low life, attack etc (lets say a CR-4 creature)
add multiple of them -> multiply life by that number
increase attack by +1 for each additional creature
Add an action so they can attack multiple character with lower attack bonus
(might have to experiment with the number and of the mob should get other boni along the lines)

each attack can at most kill a single creature (except aoe attacks)
just remove hp like usual and everytime a creature is killed by an attack put down the number counter, the number modifier(s) and then continue with the weaker creature

So in the example lets take the gremlin puwampi that was released

I am thinking damage would have to also get raised..add the number of creatures to it?

10 puwampi gaggle(?) Cr 6 (cr 1 + half of 10 (1/2 the number of creatures seems low)?
hp 170 (17 X 10)
melee +18 (+8+10) (1d6-3 changed to 1d7 +7)
ranged +18 (+8+10) (1d6 changed 1d6 + 10)

Seems About right I guess?

Maybe lets look at the Skeleton Guard

10 skeleton Guards in a Platoon cr 4 (cr -1 x half of 10( 1/2 thenumber of creature seems about right)?
hp 40
melee scimitar +16 1d6+12
melee claw +16 1d4 +12
ranged short bow +16 1d6+10

seems ok but maybe more HP? I guess if you can only take out one at a time (except with AOE or cleave or something it works)

I think for now I will go this route...unless there is an official conversion doc at some point (* fingers crossed and hoping)

This seems about right, as said, one has to experiment a little with the number but like this a mob/troop of low level mobs might be a challange which can be cut down piece by piece

Not sure about the damage, if you go with higher group sizes it quickly becomes a lot

Maybe half the number of creatures or their cr added to it? Not sure yet

In the rules system this cames from it had a few extra notions that are hard to translate to pathfinder , but like this it already makes some monsters more intersting

I did a playtest conversion of Ironfang and posted about it here. We are going to be starting book 4 in PF2 tomorrow. Hit me up if you want stat blocks or whatever.

Yea that would be great! I did a search and did not find much Thanks

I would also greatly appreciate it as I'm currently vacillating between Age of Ashes and Ironfang Invasion as my first PF2 AP.

Check my created threads. I don't have time to send you the link. We are doing character conversions tonight.
