A couple of starship construction questions

Rules Questions

I'm in the process of publishing a list of new starship frames, systems, mods, etc., as well as new starship designs. I've got two questions.

1. Say I'm adding a heavy weapon to say, an explorer's front or turret. Do I really have to buy a light weapon mount first, and then upgrade it, or can I just buy a heavy weapon mount?

2. I'm planning to showcase the frames, systems and so on in Homebrew. Would it be a good place to post the ship designs as well, or is there a better place for them?

Thanks to everyone who replies.

1) AFIK: Yes, you have to build and upgrade it through all the stages to get the BP cost to work out properly. I myself had to fumble through this for a crew rebuilding the Sunrise Maiden from scratch after losing space combat quite spectacularly and barely surviving.

2) Homebrew is probably your best bet if you're looking for community feedback.

Hmm... It looks like Archives of Nethys doesn't have the rules for refitting and upgrading starships. At least not as far as I could find. But I see it here in the CRB on page 305.

New weapons mounts rules does not have a price for buying a new heavy weapon mount. Only for upgrading a light weapon mount to a heavy weapon mount. So I would read that as not being able to buy a heavy weapon mount directly. You would have to buy the light weapon mount and upgrade it.

Now, that doesn't mean that you can't role play it as buying a heavy weapon mount directly. You could certainly list the price as 7 BP to buy a heavy weapon mount on the front arc of your explorer frame.

Yes, the BP cost for the final form of the ship will be based on what the ship has. There is no difference based on whether you bought a heavy weapon mount, bought a light weapon mount and an upgrade, salvaged a weapon mount off of a defeated enemy ship, or any other path you describe to get there.

The result of "outright buying" and upgrading from light to heavy would be the same as far as build points are concerned so it makes no difference how you describe it, IMO.

The "how" of Starship upgrades is left up to the GM and the group. Whether that means salvage from enemy ships, directly buying, upgrading, etc is left to the groups discretion.

Simply put, these two things are mathematically identical. When you remove something from a ship, the rules refund the entire BP cost of that thing; the rules do not permit for you to somehow lose BP, for good reason.

Did you check the Rules section? Starship rules are split into two section on the website: Vehicles > Starships, and Rules > Starships.

Retrofitting Starships can be found here: Rules > Starships > Refitting and Upgrading Starships

Apparently not well enough. I was poking around in everything I could think of from the Vehicles section. I even ran a search on those terms (but I may have filtered it to just 'Starships/Vehicles').
