Layered defensive casting

Rules Questions

Hey guys so I’m making some defensive casting plans and I hit upon something of a rules conundrum.

So in the past I’ve ran casters with emergency force sphere

And also contingency mirror image, with the trigger of, when an attack roll is made against me.

I’ve now designed a character that would be potentially running several slightly tweaked layers.

Contingency resilient sphere would already be in effect with the trigger, when an attack would otherwise connect with the casters body.

Extended Overland flight would be pre cast

When combat starts, if I am feeling the need to play defensive

Cast mirror image

Move action ascend into the air away from combat

This way in theory if an attack bypasses the mirror images, and only in that circumstance, a resilient sphere would be contingency cast.

In which case on my following turn I use wild arcana to cast Move through space, so I can hop back out of the sphere and still be able to use my standard action.

So im layering a contingency resilient sphere to activate when an attack bypasses my mirror images.

Do you see any reason why this would not work?

Unless you are also spherical, it seems like the attack might be inside your potential resilient sphere when the trigger is met. It'd certainly protect you from future attacks but I'm not sure about the triggering one.

Especially at higher levels, where you may suddenly find yourself trapped in the resilient sphere with your enemy. At 10th level, it's a 10 foot diameter sphere, which encloses both of you.

The contingency spell specifically mentions that"complicated or convoluted" conditions may cause the spell to fail. I won't try to guess your GM's mind, but in my game you would be treading a pretty fine line, since that is a three event trigger (Mirror Image cast, attacked, attack would succeed in spite of Mirror Image). While that is specific, your GM would have to rule on the complicated and convoluted aspect.

I think I would allow it but you may suffer one attack before the resilient sphere is active.

The trigger is essentially Mirror Image active AND Suffering an Attack. The attack being suffered, whether successful or not is already within the resilient sphere.

The OP wanted to trigger only on an attack that got by the mirror images, not just when attacked. It is that extra step that I am suggesting could be ruled as complicated.

Actually I think I confused you with bad wording

I want the trigger to be suffering an attack - independent of mirror image

But I want to be able to cast mirror image and thus have the contingency only trigger if an attack would hit me, not as soon as an attack was launched as that could be a waste.

This does not work. Walk Through Space cannot get you out of an Emergency Force Sphere because transparent barriers still block line-of-sight.

Walk Through Space wrote:
When under the effects of this spell, you can teleport up to 30 feet as a move action. You must end this movement in an unoccupied space that you can stand on within line of sight.
Line Of Effect wrote:
A line of effect is a straight, unblocked path that indicates what a spell can affect. A line of effect is canceled by a solid barrier.
Line Of Sight wrote:
A line of sight is the same as a Line of Effect but with the additional restriction that that it is blocked by fog, darkness, and other factors that limit normal sight (such as Concealment).

This part, however, is not so much of a problem:

You can always choose to cast a spell at a lower caster level. However, you could still have a Tiny enemy sharing your square...

However, Resilient Sphere indicates the you can teleport out, as you can bypass a Wall of Force that way, so it doesn't block line of effect as far as teleportation is concerned.

I’m not using emergency force sphere, I’m using resilient sphere, which functions are wall of force, which explicitly says you can teleport through.

Actually, even Emergency Force Sphere can be teleported through. It's also based on wall of force, with no extra text indicating you can't.

It's not that the sphere blocks teleportation, it's that walk through space has an additional requirement of line of sight that the sphere does block.

If you want to simplify the trigger, why not use "if I am about to be injured by an attack?"

Sorry for confusing Resilient Sphere and Emergency Force Sphere, but as ryric noted, my point still stands.

Wall of Force wrote:
Breath weapons and spells cannot pass through a wall of force in either direction, although dimension door, teleport, and similar effects can bypass the barrier.

Dimension Door and Teleport have no line of sight or line of effect requirements for their destinations as Walk Through Space does. It is not waiving line of sight/effect restrictions, only saying that the Wall of Force does not specifically prevent teleportation any more than any other solid object.

Ahhh I see
