My opinion on the black powder thing: As a follower of Calistra I can say that an explosion would not satisfy the hundreds if not thousands of people Thrune has hurt... And as Calistra Dictates: what shall be done to me shall be returned Tenfold. So I would preffer to keep him alive, While I repeatedly stab him in the gut and heal his wounds for a other round of Stabbings.

I'm gonna keep him alive until he realizes what he as done wrong, And then make him know that what he is going to get is ten times worse....

"You ever hear of a punishment... Called Sen katto?" he says, admiring the edge of his razor sharp Blade. "I don't expect you to, It's Tian for 'Tousand Cuts'..." he lowers the blade and gives his victim a single nic, Just enough to draw blood and sting without causing any true damage. "Well, Since I cannot logically return the pain you have caused me my killing my mother and unborn sibling, and since bringing your own family into this would make me as much a monster as you... I've decided to grant you the gift of learning what it feels like... To die by Sen katto. I imagine it's nothing compared to the pain of havimg Everything you've ever loved taken from you right before your eyes as you're powerless against it- but it can probably get close"

Hi!!! Im Canacha your friendly uhm Alchagunslinger and noted rebel! . . .ish.

AS one of the key leaders of this ah hmm group im just want everyone to know that we are working hard to restore Mint to the staple of peoples tea! Also, despite it being a totally viable and workable plan I will not be loading a cart full of black powder and rolling it into the Opera house to take out that stupid ugly smelly Jerk Barzillai Thrune...

They made me promise not to do that

Anyone have any questions about the group from a player's perspective? Im here to be super helpful!

Hi Canacha. Pleased to meet you. I'm Mirabella, and I like to be super helpful too! Laria Longroad is a friend of mine, and she has already told me lots of stories about you and your adventures (don't worry, I can keep a secret). I'm really impressed with you guys solving the murders in Devil's Nursery and sending Nox running with her tail between her legs and whatnot...you are real heroes and I'd like to help you put that lout Barzillai Thrune on his ass.

I'm kinda happy you won't blow up the opera house, because I really hope to be able to perform there some day....provided we can kick Thrune out first, of course. I'm a really good singer and my music can do lots of cool things, like make Jack better at hitting stuff with that shiny sword of his and making hiding devils glow with shimmering sparkles. I'm not much of a fighter, but I'm great at talking to people and I know a lot of different things and some pretty nifty spells. I also dabble in alchemy, so perhaps we can craft a few fun things in your lab?

Speaking of Jack and chemistry...what's going on with the two of you?...the way Laria tells it, he think's you sweeter than one of her honey-baked rolls.

Anyway, I don't think I have any questions for now...but thanks a bunch for offering.

Yeah please don't blow up the opera house, we want to take it back.

A small gnome who has been wanding about the room giving away sooth syrup, still gut and fire ward gel looks up when he hears black powered.

"I would very much like to compare recipes at some point. I know some soil deposits that are great sources of sulphur."

He also brings over a bindle of tea leaves he has collected, which includes a substantial amount of mint.

"Mix it with the apple clover it makes a wonderful tea."

Bicks starts to think about what little he remembers of the buildings his mother designed and the Chelaxian building codes, and he thinks.

Factoring in the heat resistance of baked bricks and their natural hardness, black powders propulsiveness in an open space he too comes to the conclusion that it this may not be the best plan.

"I think you all came to the right decision an explosion however controlled with result in a significant amount of collateral damage. I could be on the scene to mitigate the worst of it, but injured civilians are not the best way to inspire rebellion...Well, I don't really know. You guys are the leaders. I have just been supplying the things I can and healing people. My part has been much smaller than the rest of yours."

As for out of character questions. I looked and the group it seems like folks have well-built characters but are not trying to break the game so I aimed for that level of optimization (though you can only optimize healing so much). If any of the players think the character to too far in either direction I'm happy to work with the group to slot in as seamlessly as possible and maintain balance.

I know some players hate gnome. Any gnome hate?

Do you all use stealth as a group often? Would it be helpful for new PCs to be good at it?

Looks like Jack Duncloak is pretty darn stealthy but the others haven't invested in it at all.

Decided on Sylvan Trickster, will be putting a character together when I get home :3

I have played with enough barbarians that try to sneak that 'being good' at and the 'group likes to do it often' can have different answers.

"Oooh Miss Laria is super nice. She introduced me to coffee and pastries at the same time. I would have never thought something so gross like coffee would go so good with a nice honeybun. Its no mint tea i tell you, but it is what it is eh?

Speaking of Jack.... what do you mean? He's a sweetheart, sure would be nice if he got better with those blades of his. I mean when you watch him he looks like he knows what he's doing then well nothing. I think he is trying too hard myself. If I wasnt like a gazibillion more years older than him I'd court him... still might, i dont know kinda busy right now you know?

Oh hey Mister Bicks! Yeah I put some math into it and well, being a self propelling wagon to delivery the payload wasnt really feasible at the moment and I love horsies. I wouldnt want them to get hurt pulling the wagon so that idea is shelved. Bomb throwers are too unstable...maybe one day.

Oooh Fangsy where was your teaspot prethrune? I know a couple of okay places if you dont mind the occasional dock worker hassling you cause you are nice.

As for your out of charector questions, A lot of us arent super optimized. The only gnome hate i can think of is for a certain gnome alchemist in the tiefling part of the city who tried to blow up Jack and pretty much insulted us all. He still has it coming if you ask me. But as a Dhampier doing her best to stay somewhat on the downlow and understanding prejudice due to her heritage in Ustalav, Gnome wouldnt have anything held against them. :)

Stealth wise, Its not out of the question for us to be stealthy, funnily enough wouldnt be hard at all for Myself to become quite stealthy and ghostlike with a few spent points... but . . . the pistol and bombs make that almost moot at times eh?

"So uh.. Kizimie is it? Careful with those blades.. they look sharp. I cant promise i wont put a bullet or nine into ol Barzalai's head if i get the chance ... but Perhaps you will get your shot to cut him up a time or two first."

"Miss Canacha I assume? Well I was about to suggest Cafe Rouge. They serve the most delectable, sorry I mean served the most delectable little glacé tarts. Apparently that didn't agree with Thrune's 'delicate' constitution. It looked like a bomb had hit the place after the Hellknights where done."

Overhearing the conversation, two women approach. One, a shorter slightly built half-elf with pale skin and dark hair, the other a tall muscular and curvaceous woman of unknown origin with bronze colored skin and long white hair.

Both women have a matching brand on their foreheads in the shape of what appears to be a wasp. The brands glow, seemingly with an inner light of their own.

The shorter half-elf begins speaking in a soft tone. "The Opera House? That wouldn't be my first choice. An explosion, though, could be just what this fledgling organization needs.

I have studied rebellions, and the groups that lead them. Bold strokes are needed to rally the people to your cause, and an explosion... that could be just the thing."

The larger woman lays a hand on the half-elf's arm soothingly. "Control, Zoastria. Mass death is not the way."

The half-elf's face twists with fury as she hisses. "He is a Thrune, Kitt! It is what he deserves!" Her face smooths, and she talks in a calm voice. "Besides, Control, is exactly what I was referring to. A controlled explosion, in the right place, with safeguards to reduce collateral damage. We can always move in to heal any innocents caught in the blast."

Nodding, she addresses Canacha directly. "These are the types of bold initiatives that I hope to bring to the Ravens if you find Kitt and I worthy."

Kizimie smiles politely. "you're one to just shoot without thinking aren't you? Well don't worry, Ill let you shoot him... I mean as long as you don't kill him... I want him alive..." Kizime sighs "It hurts me to say it... But he needs to live. The Church and all those in charge of it need to be judged for their crimes. Death would only grant them what they want- as most of their souls belomg to devils. If they die- they'll just become devils to haunt us later. Keeping them alive means that they'll br able to pay for their crimes, Even if they become devils in the afterlife"

Kizime is very much a cool headed Chaotic Neutral. He seeks to take down Tyranny and refuses to be restrained in his actions, Yet he is calm and collected as he does so. His heart is on fire, But the flame has purpose

"If it is not imprudent of me to ask, revolution is messy but there are historical and contemporary models. Do you want this to be like the people revolt or that the red revolution of Galt? I have Hosseter's set of scathing political essays the Imperial Betrayal, which have some enlightened but potentially dangerous ideas. I think I missed to answer a few questions and I apologuise for it, it's been a busy week. But to answer a few of them.

I'm fine with people who have read/gmed the adventure as players as long ad they keep the knowlegde seperated. I will ask a player to leave if I feel like the use the knowledge from the books to their advantage.

I can allow players who want to attempt crafting in the construction face, but you have to do the rolls here and any wasted gold on a failed attempt can't be taken back if you decide to change your idea and create a new character afterwards, so be careful not to waste anything.

Anything els I missed feel free to remind me here or in pm. Othetwise I'll look everything over in the weekend.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

The Silver Ravens have certainly made an impression here in Kintargo - just look at all these people who want to join their cause. Such a variety of races and skills. They must all have really interesting stories to tell, Mirabella thought to herself as she scanned the crowded room.

As she had done so often before, Mirabella decided to practice the halfling talent of observing without attracting attention to herself. Sometimes she used her enchanted cap to assume the appearance of a young human child or an adult gnome, but there was no need for that here.

After finding a suitable spot to sit which afforded her a nice vantage of the entire room, Mirabella tugged her legs under her, gathered the folds of her cloak around her and brushed a stray lock of her curly auburn hair away from her eyes. She withdrew a journal bound in deep blue leather from her backpack and dipped her pen in ink.

Ever helpful, she started to jot down a list of all the new recruits looking to join the rebellion. Perhaps that will help Canacha and her friends pick the best candidates to join their team she tought, as she scribbled away while occasionally nibbling on one of Laria's cinnamon buns.

"Miss, I couldn't help but look at your list, and I've seen that I'm not in it."

Jesper, I put together Morant's home from the rooms in Ultimate Campaign, if you would prefer to set another price (then I'll see how it pans out with the new pricing) or not to use those rules (then I'll deduct some gp for a room at an inn and call it a day) you just have to say and I'll change it.

My pardons, mister. I must have missed you among all the other arcane spellcasters. I assure you that I did not omit you on purpose, as I have no reason to doubt your courage and conviction to the cause. I’ll add your name to the list right away.

As for the matter of security, you gentlemen have no need for concern. I’ll hand over the list to the Silver Ravens and I trust them completely to dispose of it properly once they have reviewed all the candidates, Mirabella says in a disarming tone. She dabs a rogue ink smudge off her hand with her napkin, then adds:

After all...my name is on the list too.

I've never read the Ultimate campaign, got in a humble bundle a few years back but never read it yet.

Jesper, any feelings about bardic masterpieces? Mirabella currently don’t have any, but I’m considering picking up one or two at later levels.

If it helps there's a FAQ that never got answered, lots of discussion about how they should be treated.

I apoligise for the sparseness of my posts,I left my previous company of 16 years and am still adapting to my new...everything, the 12- 16 hour days 5 days a week and 1/2 day on Saturday along with 330starts have been trying.

I will create an online character if chosen, but I believe Dame Jarvis would have the following to chime in with

I do not wish to see my Opera House blown to smithereens, the consuming of coffee and pastry of good quality is a pleasure not a a chore, and there shall be mint within this city.

I want my julips to taste proper!

Hearing what she perceives as timidity, Zoastria sniffs. "If it falls into the wrong hands then that fat pile of devil-worshiping offal will know who will be coming to end his miserable life.

It's not as if he or his filthy kin need any pretense in order to throw any or all of us in prison and torture us. I, for one, am done hiding in the shadows. The Sting of Vengeance is coming, and we shall be the ones who wield the stinger!"

Eyes blazing, Zoastria makes eye contact with several of those who turned to her outburst, daring them to gainsay her.

Kitt, however, laughs long and loud, then reaches out to stroke Zoastria's hair. "Oh! I love it when you get all passionate! The anger brings a bit of color to those pretty cheeks."

Reaching out for Zoastria's cheek, Kitt playfully pinches it like a grandmother, then laughs again. "You need to release some of that tension, Zoe, and I need a drink! Who's buying?" she says as she looks around.

Internally fuming, Zoastria lowers her eyes and mumbles. "I told you not to call me that, especially not here. I'm trying to make a good imression."

Emmendonius Steledznyzky (em-en-DOH-nee-us steh-ledz-NEETS-kee)

Human Investigator (Steel Hound)
Concept: Scholarly provocateur/engineer

Quote

“The stars will continue turning tomorrow, whether we think well of it or not. But that does not mean we cannot steer their course, at least a little; we can tip the rubble of time and history to one side or another, send it tumbling down another course if we are both wise and bold. The edifices of our time seem eternal to us, but none are so solidly built that they could not come crashing down if the right stones are moved.
So I say: fire at will.”

Appearance:
Portrait

Slender, lithe, and bearing large, dark eyes with an alert but impassive gaze, Emmen has something of the look of a deer- but look closer at those wide black eyes, and you’ll see more of the shark in him. He’s pale-skinned, with thin, brown hair swept to the side of a high-domed brow. His mouth is small and straight, and humorless when not split wide in complete hilarity. He moves with an efficient, precise step and straight limbs, almost giving the suggestion of a clockwork soldier.
His dress favors straightforward, practical clothes, but sometimes fastened or arranged in eccentric ways that suit his habits better, such as tucking the leather apron skirt he wears in the workshop or laboratory over his shoulder out on the street when occupied with a project.

Personality:
Emmen is a difficult man to like; even harder, most find, to argue with. A lifetime of scorn from his brothers and disappointment in the false promises of the Chelaxian order have left him inured to the opinions of others, and disdainful of convention. He has the savvy to hold his tongue in the presence of superiors, as all Chelaxians must if they wish to survive to adulthood. But among equals and lessers he tends to ignore shows of courtesy and solidarity, operating with a mechanical efficiency and utility that wins few hearts. This lack of amity isn’t a sign of bitterness or arrogance, really; mostly, he has little faith in the power of others to give him anything of value until proven otherwise, and concentrates his energies on his own designs.

Conversely, to those who have impressed him with their wit, imagination, audacity, or daring, Emmen is an ideal “partner in crime”: eager to escalate to ever-more brazen and convoluted schemes to disrupt and transform the stagnant order around them. He laughs rarely, but when provoked, does so with a raucous caw that tends to startle those not expecting it. Similarly, he’s surprised many a casual acquaintance for his reverence for the performing arts. While most Chelaxians of any station whatsoever should at least appear to appreciate the opera, Emmen’s enjoyment of it is nothing less than rapturous. And, even more surprisingly, he takes almost equal pleasure in the base japeries of minstrels and halfpenny street buskers. Those who know him well understand this: Emmen sees that stories are how all new things begin, in the imagining of a world not quite our own. Contrary to first blush, he values the ineffable dynamism of the arts just as much as the earth-shaking power of technology, so long as those embellishments serve to create new truths rather than prop up dead ones. Satire, if it is of any merit at all, rarely fails to please him; conversely, the most poignant morality play will earn a shrug, at best.

Audacious as he might be, Emmen is mortal, and as such, knows fear. His greatest horror is that of irrelevance, of passing from the world without leaving so much as a fading ripple to mark his leaving. He could face a horrific public crucifixion with manly resolve, if he thought it might serve to expose the weakness and venality of a corrupt order. But to be consigned to an oubliette, to live out his life in unchanging and meaningless darkness- this thought gives him night terrors. He knows that, if it comes to that, he’ll happily die a thousand times over before he’s brought to such an empty end.

Ideologically, Emmen has a sophisticated belief structure based on the concept of “punctuated equilibrium”- a historical process defined by stable holding patterns which are periodically disrupted at tipping points, minor changes which produce a radical change. Water heated to a certain point is simply hot water- but just one degree hotter, and it becomes something else entirely, called steam! These critical phase transitions fascinate him, and he believes that they represent something like “master threads” in a grand pattern of the universe’s inevitable unfolding. This is as close as he comes to piety; while he pays respect to Brigh, Norgorber, and Nethys when an oath or curse is called for, to Emmen the gods are as much a part of the Grand Design as mortals, and no more so its architects than himself.

Background:
Ancestry
The Stelydnyzky family has soldiered for the glory of Cheliax since before the rise of House Thrune, with unstinting pride and distinction. With deep roots in Kintargo, Stelydznyzkys have fought in almost every major engagement in Chelaxian history, from the famed naval victory over Taldor at Odrapayan Pass to the doomed charge of the Plain of Torabreyn. While never having risen to the status of nobility, the Stelydznyzkys are landed, well-respected gentry with an old name in the city and a reputation to uphold in the eyes of the Imperial authorities.
Emmendonius is the youngest of Barkoliu Steledznyzky’s four children. His father has enjoyed an uneventful but honorable career in the 148th Cavalry Battalion of the Chelaxian Imperial Army; primarily a ceremonial posting as commanding officer of the honor guard to various Chelaxian nobles. Still, his dedication to honor and tradition did not fail his ancestors, and he raised his children for service to the Thrice-Damned Throne.

Childhood
While his two older brothers grew up ruddy, hale, and full of the sententious pride of a true Chelaxian, Emmendonius was different. A sickly, willful child, his parents feared he might be a changeling of some sorty, with his too-wide stare and endless questions. While his older brothers played at being Hellknights and only let little Emmen join in as a slave or villain, if at all, he soon found he took more pleasure when playing alone- arranging and rearranging stones, making mock fortresses in the woods, burning things just for the pleasure of the flame. As a teenager, he’d watch the shipwrights assembling great vessels in the dockyards, or go to the opera with his sister. Despite an aptitude for magery which manifested at an early age, his father considered such pursuits beneath the dignity of a Steledznyzky man, and forbade Emmen from pursuing studies at an arcane academy.

Emmen’s revenge was to torment his father by turning the home itself against him- subtly repositioning doorhandles, swapping the places of similar household things, even some low-grade booby traps designed to look like bad coincidences. He had a knack for putting the right elements in place to create a minor disaster that couldn’t ever be directly traced back to himself, and Barkoliu’s “bad luck” didn’t change until he agreed to

This was only the most severe of the uncounted skirmishes that characterized relations between Emmen and his father in his tumultuous boyhood. His dealings with his brother were little kinder, and only his sister Ateliestria- who went on to become a notable tastemaker in Kintargan opera- was able to understand the visions he saw in the world, and the cravings he felt to see them acted out in concrete reality.

Early adventures
As a young man, and last of his family to rise to that role, many long shadows were cast over Emmen’s life and career. His eldest brother was an honored and dreaded Hellknight of the Order of the Pyre, and the second-eldest a distinguished captain and hardened veteran of the Chelaxian Imperial Navy. Emmen was eminently unsuited for an officer’s commission, and after much finagling on the part of his father, received a relatively lowly instatement as a cavalry sergeant. After a few humiliating mishaps- Emmen did not care for horses, nor they for him- he applied, under his own authority, for a transfer to an artillerist’s unit. There he served as a lowly sergeant, learning how to create and use machines of war.

Siege engineering was to Emmen as natural as breathing. He had an uncanny and intuitive understanding of what made things hold together, and therefore, how to take them apart. The crews he served on were always the first to assemble their trebuchet, and their deadly payloads always seemed to strike home at the critical point of failure for any wall or fortification they might be arrayed against. In his spare time, he used his salary and whatever money his family provided to purchase books on any subject possible- history, natural philosophy, the arts mechanical, or the secrets of alchemy. He was beginning to see the patterns of the world more sharply now, and the fascinating eddies that made them change completely, and a powerful sense of inspired thought guiding him toward the truth.

He first saw true combat at the age of 27, when an Isgerian warlord with grand ambitions overwhelmed a border fort and garrisoned it with lawless bandits, threatening a Chelaxian trade route. His regiment was deployed to drive out the brigand, root and stem, and make an example of him to all who would think to challenge the might of Cheliax. Emmen was placed under the command of one Captain Opriomus Jarvis, a hapless and unfit scion of a Great House of Cheliax who received his commission in spite of a complete ignorance of military doctrine. Emmen’s unit was ordered to deploy in the midst of a boggy field in a low depression, in order to reserve more comfortable and defensible ground to the division’s cavalry. Emmen protested as loudly as one could to a Chelaxian imperial officer and expect to survive it, to no avail.

As Emmen feared, the Isgerian saw the vulnerability, and capitalized on it. A small team of raiders stealthily infiltrated their camp at night, using the low ridges of the depression for cover. By the time the artillery unit knew they were under attack, it was too late. The soft ground made running almost impossible, and detached as they were from the main body of the regiment, they had no choice but to stand and fight.

It was brutal, bloody up-close fighting in the dark. The artillery crews fell like flies at first, before rallying with their backs to the erected war machines to prevent being taken from behind. Still, they were losing three of their own to every one of the attackers every minute. Emmen killed his first man that night, putting a crossbow bolt through the throat of a raider from close enough to have his face spattered with blood, and realized they were doomed without help from the cavalry, who had no idea yet what was happening in the camp.
Thinking desperately and searching for a plan, Emmen noticed something the made him pause. The raider he’d killed had a rare object in his belt- a pistol, and a horn filled with “black powder”. Emmen was familiar with the device only in theoretical terms, and had never handled one before. But he knew what black powder could do, and with the supply he’d taken from the raider he ignited the largest of the rock-throwers in the unit.

Within moments, the structure was engulfed in flame, and shedding a searing light on the camouflaged raiders, while also alerting the whole regiment that something wasn’t right. Emmen and a few survivors held out beside the flames, using the collapsing siege engine as a weapon of a different kind entirely- forcing the raiders into the path of billowing smoke and falling debris. They survived long enough for the light cavalry’s arrival to turn the slaughter around.

The next morning, when the main battle commenced, the artillery crews had been decimated. The fortifications of the enemy were still whole and sound when the first assault began, and while Cheliax won the day eventually, it was an uphill battle that cost many more lives than it needed to. Still galled over Emmen’s insubordinate behavior before, he charged him with willfully negligent attention to security, and ordered a 20-lash flogging as punishment. Emmen still has the scars on his back.
He emerged from that battle a different man, in more than one respect. A hopeless slaughter had taken place, all because men raised up by birth and a blind law could not roust themselves from their faith in their own entitlement and immunity from the unexpected. Jolting him out of his fantasies of proving his worth to the crown, his unexamined loyalty to Cheliax shattered overnight. A new design began to knit itself together in his mind- one woven of threads of cunning, inspiration, and above all: audacity! “Never again to be played as a pawn”, he swore to himself; and to this vow, he has never been untrue.

Beyond these rarefied epiphanies, there were others of a more base nature. The power of black powder had always fascinated Emmen from afar- now he had one an alchemical killing machines dropped right in his lap. Emmen tucked this find beneath his cloak, knowing full well to be found out risked execution (or worse)- a tactical blunder was one thing, theft from the Majestrix was another entirely. He was fully beyond the pale, now, but free of regret. A new horizon had unfolded before him, and he could no longer turn back from pursuing it, come what may.

He resigned from the army soon after, and following a period of wandering over a year or two, found himself a posting as a lay adjunct to the Citadel of Rivad of the Hellknight Order of the Rack. There he worked, patiently but tirelessly transcribing seditious texts, unauthorized research, fouling up raids and arrests with contrived accidents, and hampering the Order’s operation from within. Meanwhile, he took opportunities to practice his marksmanship in a disused dungeon of the Citadel, making his own black powder and working to the point he could take a rat on the run down in no more than 2 shots almost every time.
A few years passed in this way, before an uncannily perceptive inquisitor by the name of Vellimexius Ethriou came dangerously close to revealing Emmen’s blasphemous library. He resigned his post under a cloud of not-quite-damning suspicion, and for the first time in almost a decade, returned to his home of Kintargo.

Recent Events
With his father since passed, his mother declined into dotage, and of his siblings only his sister Ateliestria- now a formidable woman in her own right- residing in the city, Emmen has resumed his place in his ancestral home. Things are different now, though- there is a different smell in the air, the smell of flames and blood and something altogether new. He has a vision for the future; one of a Kintargo free of the Empire’s reach, and free to take strange new forms, whatever they might be. He sees in the nascent rebellion not a righteous cause, but simply the best available vehicle for the next turning of History’s wheel; and no matter what else might pass, he has every intention of remaining atop that wheel. Devils take the hindmost!

"Zoastria Oririe"Hearing what she perceives as timidity, Zoastria sniffs. [b wrote:

"If it falls into the wrong hands then that fat pile of devil-worshiping offal will know who will be coming to end his miserable life.

It's not as if he or his filthy kin need any pretense in order to throw any or all of us in prison and torture us. I, for one, am done hiding in the shadows. The Sting of Vengeance is coming, and we shall be the ones who wield the stinger!"[/b]

At the mention of what would normally be considered heresy among the devil-worshipping populace, he spread a broad grin across his bearded lips before taking a pull from his mug. Only watching the glare of the woman with a smile as her eyes cut the room looking for insult or contrition.

But when her companion called for a drink he took his open hand, slapping at the table before him and calling over the small buzz of the room, "I am!" He inclines his head with a gesture and a small wave of his mug in way of toast, "Is least I can pay for those with courage to speak hard truths, yes? Is not common in city to hear honesty these days."

Jesper, any feelings about bardic masterpieces? Mirabella currently don’t have any, but I’m considering picking up one or two at later levels.

I have always assumed they were different bardic performances that you could use instead of fx. inspire courage.

I am basing this on the this. Unless otherwise stated, effects or feats that extend the duration of bardic performance (such as the Lingering Performance feat in the Advanced Player’s Guide) do not apply to masterpieces. to me this says more than anytging it's a performance and not something you can do while keeping another up, but I may be wrong since I have also FAQ'ed that thread years ago while I was a venture agent and wanted to rule it correctly for pfs.

With a grin and a twinkling eye, Kitt turns and assesses the Ulfen man. Purring, she starts to sway in his direction. "Oooh, Zoastria, I like this one. Generous, and so masculine."

Getting close, she reaches out to run her fingers down Weller's arm. From this vantage, Weller can see that Kitt's body is covered a short layer of bronze colored fur and that her long, pointed fingernails appear to actually be claws.

"Can we keep him? He looks housebroken."

Zoastria rolls her eyes. Realizing she isn't going to get anywhere with speeches while Kitt is in a playful mood, she joins the two.

"Kitt, we talked about this. People are not pets. Perhaps introducing yourself would be more appropriate."

Kitt pouts for a second then smiles slyly at Weller. Continuing to purr, and still gripping his arm, she says "My name is Kitt. What is yours, Sailor?"

Sighing, Zoastria smiles pleasantly, then extends a hand toward Weller. "and I am Zoastria. Pleased to meet yoy."

Smiling from under his beard he keeps an eye on where the hand travels, keeping attention on the simple leather band around his left wrist so it's not unduly disturbed. But he has little problem with the tracing of the Linnorm tattoo down his right arm as he laughs lightly at her question, "I am not house broken. I'm more likely to break house."

When the two introduced himself he stood, gently taking the woman's hand in his large one to shake, "Weller Helfdayne of Broken Bay. Recently unwilling guest of Cheliax." He intentionally doesn't glance down to the small intricate brands on the inside of his right arm with the bill of sale from his enslavement. Nor the tattoos surrounding it to diffuse attention.

"Let's make sure we burn that list after we are done."

A thin, stiff-looking fellow in a simple but well-made jerkin and halfcloak, has been sitting at a table nearby, idly tracing his finger through a splash of ale foam on the tabletop. Occasionally something catches his attention. Then he stares at a stranger with the unblinking, innocent malice of a caged predator who is (for the time being) well fed and content, before dismissing them completely.

The gnome's comment jolts a thin, snorting laugh out of the man, which died away suddenly as it came. "They should have me do that," he murmured. "After three years as a lay brother in Citadel Rivad, I'm a true connoisseur of burning paper. You know, they use a special ink in Her Infernal Majesty's printing presses, so the paper burns hotter and cleaner. The smoke, you see, it's hard on the men who stoke the clarity pyres."

His voice was calm, and quiet enough that most humans would have to strain over the noise of the gathering to catch it, and he stared at the gnome without hiding that he was wondering how he would react.

OOOOOOH I love creative people! And Knowledge is always good!

Some metagame notes on my application::
Here are my thoughts on how Emmen could fit into the party:

There's a significant amount of overlap between his general concept, mechanically, and Canacha's. Both are alchemically-inclined crafters and saboteurs with a dash of gunplay and explosives salted in. Both have the Pattern Seeker trait as well, and in terms of personality, both grew up as "oddballs".

You could read this as a redundancy that would create competition for certain kinds of stage time and flexibility in the party, but Canacha's and Emmendonius' skill set and approaches to challenges don't overlap as much as they do complement. Emmen is a consummate Skill-monkey, focused heavily on skills and features that support his concept as a visionary siege engineer as well as Knowledge skills and information-gathering skills like Perception, Sense Motive, and Bluff. He loves careful planning, with subtle moves that culminate in dramatic results, and is utterly pragmatic in achieving them. He's invested heavily mechanically in resources that reward long-term effort; Sense Motive to ferret out allies and pawns, Linguistics to created coded texts and decrypt intercepted orders, Knowledge skills like History and Noble to see the way forward to the right target.

Canacha is much more immediate and "down and dirty", with more direct solutions to problems- bombs, mutagens, etc. Her combat skills are stronger, and she has more non-combat abilities to influence things directly, like Weaponsmithing, Bluff and Diplomacy. She's a superior alchemist to Emmen, but not as strong in her knowledge of Engineering.

I think these overlaps could be ground for a great character relationship. I'd see Emmen and Canacha as "respected rivals" and sparring partners, each trying to outdo the other where their specialties coincided, and trying to prove the superiority of their method where their skillsets diverged. I think it would be great fun to play out the two of them arguing over the best way to invent the Kintargan Bastille Day.

Jack and Emmen have a lot of overlap in their backgrounds as well, in terms of being black sheep from prominent local families; Jack takes that element to a higher extreme, but of course Emmen doesn't know about Jack's noble background, and is going to treat him as his false identity until he knows better. I like the idea of him getting to find out about Jack's hidden past and how it changes the way he looks at him.

Lena and Mic have the least common ground with Emmen, and have the most potential for sharp contrasts and maybe some in-character friction. Mic is openly emotional and sentimental, and comes from a tight-knit, loving background, so the two of them are the least likely to "click"- unless perhaps there's a sort of opposites attract effect. Even if not, there's a chance for Emmen to grow a bit less rigid and dry under the influence of someone who shows their heart a bit more.

Lena doesn't have a detailed character writeup that I've found, but as a true believer in the gods, he's like to see her as a bit of a freak, a bit of a fool, and irritatingly hard to dismiss, given her role as a heavy hitter in the group.

Meliora would be fascinating for Emmen- someone who could really see how different paths might turn out! Her social awkwardness would probably be appealing to him, as well. Also, Emmen has a long-standing regret about not being able to pursue magery at a young age, and will probably have mixed feelings of admiration and envy toward her. I see a lot of potential for interesting dynamics there.

When Weller doesn't respond to her teasing, Kitt grows bored and moves away, sitting on the other side of Zoastria. "He's too polite for my tastes anyways. Besides, I doubt he could beat me in an arm-wrestling match."

Zoastria responds with a chuckle and a wink for Weller, before becoming somewhat serious again. "Unwilling, you say? I dare say that applies to everyone in this room. At least we are here trying to make a difference."

Kitt starts laughing again. "Catfolk?! Does your red hair make you Ifrit?" She laughs louder, then snorts but quickly attempts to cover it by taking a long drink.

Zoastria turns to Canacha and responds to the questions. "Kitt is Azata, from the plane of Elysium. She is my protector and fights well with either bow or bardiche.

As for me, I am an acolyte of Calistria who gained arcane powers during an ... accident ... in our house of pleasure. Kitt saved my life that night and we have been inseparable since.

Beyond my arcane abilities, I am also a student of history and other things and I have the ability to channel divine energy to heal those in need."

I can allow players who want to attempt crafting in the construction face, but you have to do the rolls here and any wasted gold on a failed attempt can't be taken back if you decide to change your idea and create a new character afterwards, so be careful not to waste anything.

How much effective "downtime" do we have available for those rolls (ie, how many crafting rolls can we make as part of character creation)? For a crafting-oriented character like Emmen this could significantly change his starting outlay, depending on the answer. Also, would bonuses from things like purchased tools, Inspiration, etc. be applicable to those rolls?

"It's Emmen," he answered flatly, as if talking about someone else. "And the gentleman here-" he indicates the gnome with a chopping hand motion- "is quite right to be concerned about the denouement of this endeavor, should it be consummated. The grave of the old Kintargo will inevitably be the cradle of the new one, and the manner in which the old dies will define how the new one is born. Imagine one could kill Barzillai Thrune, as was suggested, in a spectacle of alchemical fire and mass destruction. Might we not be laying the groundwork for a, perhaps you could say, assassinocracy? And what if such a violent and visible death made a martyr of him? Do we really want to give Asmodean fanatics a fallen hero to rally around?"

He leans back in his seat, and stares a bit dreamily at the rafters as he continues. "One must remember how Thrune came to power in the first place- as the lesser of two evils, despotism being preferable to anarchy. If we cannot offer a viable alternative to replace the Thrice-Damned Rule, then something just as awful will simply take its place".

Receuitment is now closed, thanks for all the interest.
You have a week to finish your characters with story and build. I will begin to read though everything and start considering who will work great in the party based on story, build and the interaction between each other that you started here in the recruitment, I had not expected that.

There are a lot of great characters so far, it's going to be a tough decision.

Once a catalyst is introduced, or an unexpected fule source is contacted the effects can become too much for one person. This is a helpful metaphor for revolutions. As you say, our actions may have the effect of empowering the government if we are poor stewards of the narrative."

Bicks smiles at Bicksy it has been a while since he has been called that, "It sounds like you may have, though your intuitions, decided on a plan. My apologies if I am too presumptuous, I am humbly just trying to find ways I can help. 'Helping folks and annoying to government' as you say sounds like you are subversively building a resistance. From my conversations with folks, it seems like you are winning hearts and minds with aid while undermining the authority of House Thune. This all seems like a good framework for a revolution."

I did get my dot in before the deadline, don't know if that counts. I was on a plane all morning. Submission for consideration or to ignored as the case may be.

Roland
Human Ranger Fortune Finder/Trapper 4

Roland has a love of adventure. He dreams of fame and fortune. But this story starts when he met Isabella in Magnimar. When she went to Kintargo to perform in the opera house he sailed along with her. Then he met Louisa who played in the orchestra. Later it was Jenni, a makeup artist. Regardless, he continued to find reasons to stay in what he considered a rather overcrowded place. However, as his pursuits of love waxed and waned, he came upon a more lasting reason to stay, treasure. More precisely the promise of treasure. He began to follow up on the stories he heard about Adrakash, Ithanothaur, and Rivozair, the dragons of Kintargo.

When Thrune declared martial law, it greatly hampered Roland's ability to track down and claim the fortune he was sure was tied to the dragons. He went to the rally to protest the changes and to see which way the wind was blowing. He saw in the brewing chaos of rebellion the opportunity to continue his search treasure and perhaps a chance at becoming a hero to the people. Fortune and glory, what more could you ask for.

Guess I'll just leave this here :)

Logan’s fall from grace:
It was a hot lazy summer’s afternoon and Logan was relaxing at his favorite tea house Cafe Rouge. The waitress, a perky halfling called Amanda brought a steaming cup over to his table and with it a delicious minty aroma. Logan folded over the corner of the page he’d been reading and put the book down. He regarded it for a moment, a history of Cheliax written by an Andorann romantic, the excesses described within where more than a little disquieting. He smiled at Amanda, ”Thanks!” and slid a couple of coins her way.

He took a sip of the scaldingly hot chai before picking his book back up. Several pages later he heard the sound of marching boots and a trio of city guards lead by a particularly boorish lout called Jeffers. They had a scroll with them and in a loud voice started spouting the latest nonsense from Thrune. Something about pests and portraits, Logan really wasn’t listening as they droned on.

Then Jeffers spouted something about tea at night which caused angry murmurings from the patrons around him. Finding it hard to concentrate with the racket, Logan put his book down as the proclamation banning mint was read out This was met by general incredulity which turned to fear as the guards drew maces and clubs and proceeded to start tearing the place apart. Amanda and several other halfling staff protested at this and where koshed mercilessly. As they fell Jeffers and his men started kicking them with a crazed hook in his eyes, clearly this was more than beating.

Incensed Logan drew his sword and shouted, ”Oi! Leave them alone!” The guard sneered, ”Oh look it’s the Tanneson boy with an oversized needle, didn't trip and hurt yourself now! Oh and is that mint tea? Tut Tut. I think we’re going to have to arrest your lordship after we’ve had a spot of fun with your friend here!” Egging the other guards on Jeffers cried, ”Come on! Lets see how far you can kick a halfling!”

Jeffers drew his foot back to kick Amanda in the head when he suddenly felt a strange biting pain. He wobbled and looked down dumbfounded to see a dark metal spike poking out the front of his chest. Suddenly his legs were not working properly and his vest had turned red and he was falling. He saw Logan step past him and parry a wild chop from the nearest guard. Another guard drew his sword and ran screaming at Logan, who at the last moment stepped aside. With a flourish Logan’s sword flicked into the side of the guard’s sword, deflecting it into the chest of the first guard who fell with a startled gurgle. By now a riot was well and truly underway with bottles, chairs and even tables thrown at the guard still standing. The last thing Jeffers saw before darkness claimed him was Logan dragging the halfling woman away leaving a trail of blood behind him.

With the whirlwind of posts and activities, I can see The Dame constantly standing with her mouth open in shock and awe at the audacity of the youth these days.

As well as face palms and variations of "I'm to old for this sh@t."

"Dame, I could offer you some twitch tonic, a blood boiling pill, or some all night if you are feeling lethargic. Or, some coffee if you would like a simpler solution. Though I understand the fatigue, us elder statespeople should give our input. We don't want to leave all the revolution for the young."

Dame
My Dear young man, I shall be most pleased for some delightful coffee! I will, however, abstain from your offer of other ministrations. Thank you.

Revenge is all well and good, however, perhaps the better word should be Justice? Revenge is petty word, over used and burdened with emotion to often turning a good seed to bad apple. With a light fed by the righteous wrath of the city, one can have the same effect. With the bonuses of providing oneself with many allies, a possible legal backing and the lessened chance of another seeking...revenge on oneself.

Be wary of battling a Thrune, they are hard to kill and quite...tenacious.

Sips from her cup of coffee, staring intently at the small group.
