Can a player use slotless boons without informing GM of them at the start of session?

An issue recently came up where someone wanted to use a slotless boon at the end of a session. Said player was told by the GM that they could not because the player did not "slot" the boon at the start of the session and notify the GM they could not use it, even though it was slotless. I looked at the Society rules and I can see how people could interpret them either way. Have there been any rulings or clarifications on this? I could not find any.

Did the player not slot the Boon at the beginning of the session, or shortly after the briefing?

The actual act of "slotting" can take many forms. I use a plastic baseball card sheet with pre-printed proxies of my boons. Some of my friends keep an ongoing list or spreadsheet. Some people in this forum use Belafon's super detailed version.

But regardless of how you keep track, there should be some clear method of knowing which boons you're using, and it's a decision that is designed to be made at the beginning of the session.

You could even just write "Slots all Slotless Boons" on the top of your character sheet (although you may not want to).

It's slotless. By definition it's ready to go at any time. Even if you actually do tell the DM WHY would you mention something that's always on?

6 players all calling out all 4? slotless boons they have is table time lost for... what gained exactly? They all work all the time there's no opportunity cost like there is for slotted boons.

It was a Dayjob related boon, so he did not mention it until chronicle sheets were being filled out. He thought since it was slotless he did not need to "Slot" the boon when the GM called for it at the beginning of the session.

They're slotless: without a slot. You can't slot--to place into a slot--something that has no slot.

Slotless are available all the time. Some of don't even make sense to slot.

I have a magical tattoo that activates when hit for enough damage. How would I even remove it and put it back and remove it, etc?

I have a dermal implant. Same question.

I have a physical Starfinder badge. If I don't tell my GM about it, does it vanish from my inventory?

On and on my list of slotless boons go.

Slotless boons don’t take up any of your character’s slots; they are in essence always active. There is no limit on how many slotless boons you can have active at a time.

There. Official.

The GM was wrong. Slotless can be used at any ime because, well they are Slotless. I am sure it is covered in the guide.
