PF2 GenCon Core Rules and time

Pathfinder Society

Hi everyone

I've got tix for several PF2 PFS games but am concerned I will not get the rules in time to one, make a character, two, learn what I can of the rules to be productive and not be annoying, and three, even have a copy of the rules at the table :-$

Anyone else have concerns? Or will the opening season of PF2 be casual as everyone learns to dig into the rules? Hopefully the GMs get advanced copies of the rules and scenarios?! I know a few of my friends will not be purchasing a PF2 Core book until after the convention (one is deciding whether to buy the book until they actually play a couple games in PFS).

It's going to be pretty casual at Gen Con. I look at it like those sessions are meant to be an icebreaker type arrangement. You get to play the new edition and everyone is pretty much equal at the table. No one is going to have five years of PF2 experience which means everybody starts at Square One.

Kick back, play a character, learn the rules together, and enjoy the session. It's sort of like the first time you sat down to learn how to play Pathfinder for the very first time. It's hard to recreate that magical first session and this will go a long way towards that. The Thursday morning session of PFS2 is going to be a very special occasion for role-playing. I'm so glad I get to be a part of it for once!

Expect to use a pre-gen if you're playing in Thursday morning ( or really anytime thursday, unless you're budgeting time to wait in the Paizo booth line and make a character). Archives of Nethys should have the content Thursday morning as well. (Likewise if you're signed up for the PFS2 special (Origins of the Open Road) that's always pre-gen only.)

For comparison to the playtest last year, I was GMing two blocks of PFS1 on Thursday. Grabbed my copy of the playtest book between sessions, and made a character that evening or a PFS Playtest scenario slot on Friday morning. At the table we had 3 people who had made characters and 2 using pre-gens, so by Friday at least it seemed like people had had enough time.

My group put in for PF2 special but did not get in :(. I'm hoping more tickets will open up and am a bit surprised there aren't more seats available.

It's limited by the volunteers.

They did add more seats all around, but I don't know if GenCon posted them and they sold out or if they have yet to be posted.

Also, it is highly likely that Lone Wolf Development will have their Character Creation Station available from Thursday morning on, with the ability to develop characters in all three systems, including PF2.

I expect initial tables will be mostly, sometimes exclusively pregens then more player made characters will appear as the convention progresses.

On that note: GMs, please don't be shy about volunteering for PF2 because you're nervous about Rules-Fu. We'll all be feeling our way along together! I know I'll make mistakes at my tables, no matter how much prep I squeeze in, but it'll be a sight better than not offering the tables at all. It's an adventure!

Seconded! I ran demos for both Starfinder and the Playtest, and this year I’m running Second Edition demos. There is no way to get everything absorbed. Do the best you can, but most importantly, make sure that people have fun!

I would be running PF2, but they have me running Starfinder instead. I won't see the new rules until August 1st.

I will third the above sentiments! This will be my third year in a row learning a new system and then running games the first day at GENCON!
Starfinder(first time GMing at GENCON ever), Playtest, and this year PF2!

I even got my oldest son in on the madness, as he will GM at GENCON for the first time ever running Origin of the Open Road!
While I admit it is a little stressful, I REALLY enjoy seeing players eye's light up as they discover the fun of a new system.

This will also be my third year running specials in all the available systems!(except the card game) WOOT!

The added tickets are visible in the catalog. We added something in the neighborhood of 800 tickets and there will be at least one more round or more tickets being added in a couple of weeks.
