Rich Sarenites?

I was reading the first books magic items and noticed something interesting regarding Dawnflower Melange:

"Cafes near the Radiant Cathedral are often filled daily with Sarenite clerics enjoying this beverage while talking about the confluence of science and religion."

They must pay insanely well to the clerics if they can afford 475cr drinks daily just for refreshment :D I better keep this quiet or my PCs will probably try to rob the clerics...

A few points on this subject, because I have also thought about it.

1. I have often believed that the standard of living in the Pact Worlds vary from place to place and while they share a single currency, the individual economy is different from place to place. Living on the Sun...looks expensive and it's possible that these priests are given a hefty stipend. Then again, a Neutral Good Religion doesn't always have Neutral Good people in it's clergy. The priest of a church I was an alter boy for was nailed for stealing thousands of dollars from a charitable trust.

2. The outfits worn by Sarenite priests in Dawn of Flame are some of the nicest I've seen on any NPC ever. That church as got the cash, you know?

3. A SFS scenario call "The Solar Sortie" shows that having a close proximity to a sun is a big money maker in the power generation business and I'm betting a large portion of whatever industry that isn't religious based probably is rolling in dough. The place is likely a very wealthy.

4. Owning a coffee house on the Sun, next to what is essentially the Sarenite Vatican, implies that the coffee house is itself run by Sarenites. It's likely that the owner will break out the good stuff for the Monsignor on comp.

5. Having said all of that, yes 475cr is expensive, but Dawnflower Melange implies that it's based on Wiener Melange, a high priced Viennese coffee drink in the real world. You probably drink teeny tiny cups to get the full effect and probably never more than one or two at a time. I imagine you have lunch, and then a modest cup of Melange.

The spice must flow... or you'll be washing dishes till the next gap to pay for this.

What's funny to me is that since there are several coffee drinks named Melange, I am forced to assume the Spice that everyone is talking about in Dune is just espresso.

That's nonsense. Everyone knows it's pumpkin!

Or maybe the cost reflects the already argued abstraction level of the credit economy in SF. In this case, 475 credits doesn't actually mean 475 credits; it represents the difficulty of getting served in this shop if you're not a priest. :)

As we know from Pathfinder: Sarenites stick together like glue.

As a professional graphic designer this hurts me to my core. They couldn't even keep the skin color consistent!

That sounds about right to me in real life too.

*checks* Well, I can't judge for quality, but a quick look at Amazon says that survival knives can be had for between $20 and $50. 13 coffees for that would mean between about $1.50 and $3.80. Pricey, but not exactly unthinkable.
