Figuring Out How To Get Started With PbP

Online Campaigns General Discussion

Hi folks,

I'm having a hard time figuring out how to get started with PbP here on the Paizo Forums.

I've read DH's guide and I have a character concept. But I don't understand how I get invited or ask to get invited or apply to a game. I don't really see anything that shows open games.

I've been sifting through the site for about a week and still can't figure it out.

Thanks.

So fairly new here myself but have you checked out the Recruitment forum?

The posts there will have what GMs are recruiting for what, system, creation requirements, etc. I'd start going through those and check in with any of the individual threads that strike your fancy.

Also, solid avatar choice ;)

Yeah I finally found that. It didn't make sense to me a while ago.

LOL - yeah on the Avatar.

If I may... It can be an uphill battle to get into a game when you are new. To increase your odds of getting in:

1. Read the GM's recruitment criteria carefully.

2. Pitch a character concept that fits the game's criteria and fills a niche the GM will need or like.

3. Put in the time to tweak your build to meet the GM's criteria as well as possible. Yes, you are investing time in a build that may not make it past recruitment.

3. If you only want to play a particular character concept then look for games that will obviously benefit from that role. 'Spamming' your favorite character in a bunch of recruitments where he/she will stick out like a sore thumb rarely pays off.

4. Be patient, polite, and don't complain. Everyone on this board has been rejected from a stack of games they were dying to get into, invested hours tweaking characters to fit a GM's criteria and saw that character rejected. That's just the reality of it.

Welcome to the board!

There was a rather similar thread a while ago that collected a couple of good ideas / guidelines (yes, one from me as well).
Maybe have a look over here as well.
Cheers, and welcome on board to both of you

Thanks, stormraven and The Ghost of War. I've been doing exactly that. Looking at all the recruitment posts, looking at how people respond, and then thinking about how I would respond.

I ended up asking questions in about 4 of them, and that was too much for my brain to even think about.

So now I'm look at them in greater detail and trying to think of what a concept would be. My problem is that I'm still only in the Core Rulebook and it feels like the GMs want classes outside the core even though they say all rulebooks.

It would be cool of someone ran a Newbie friendly game here. Or maybe I just have to GM a newbie friendly game... that would definitely be jumping off into the deep end. :)

If you want to try PbP with Pathfinder Society Organized Play, may I suggest making a post at the Flaxseed Lodge >>Here<< introducing yourself, stating you are new and looking for your first PbP game?

Flaxseed is very friendly, and I would be surprised if you couldn’t find a game quickly.

I'm not sure what threads you are looking at but, generally, I think the opposite is true. With all the elaborate and complicated builds that a GM gets offered, it's a relief when he/she can add one or two 'vanilla' builds to the team whose effects can be easily gauged and understood as the team will level up.

There may not be any recruitments like that on the board right now, but they do appear. There are GM's who: announce a game is for newbies, is newbie-friendly, choose to take at least one new player along with the experienced ones, or will use "core rulebook only". Patience is unfortunately necessary.

If you are new to the game, I would steer you away from jumping in by running a PbP yourself. It can be a lot of work and it is a different challenge than running a table.
