I am creating a campaign called "The Barren World" where the people existing in it have become infertile. While it is not inherently a survival campaign, It could become that way depending on the players choices. I was wondering what are some good pathfinder books for that? Also, I was looking through the Bestiaries, what do you think would be some good "Boss" monsters for that campaign?
I want there to be freedom for the players, but I also want an over looming plot, so I was thinking of making a classic fetch quest gone wrong, with things to do and stops along the way. What do you think?

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I'd imagine that in a world where everyone is infertile, a few things would happen.

1. Longer-lived races would gain more power, as the generations of shorter-lived ones begin to die off. Elves, dwarves, and gnomes start to take over, while struggling humans turn to darker means to survive and propagate themselves. Whether fleshwarping, seeking some magical means to prolong life, or becoming undead.

2. People would turn to fertility deities in desperation. Shub-Niggurath and Lamashtu in particular. Maybe the deities do grant fertility (at a high price), but the subsequent monstrous births begin to cause huge problems as monsters ravage the land.

A good final boss is a Daughter of Shub-Niggurath. Those things are nasty, CR 20 aberrations that are the very embodiment of fertility gone wrong.

Great suggestions Wot, I was thinking the same thing.

Another thing I imagine would happen is eventually livestock and wild animal populations would begin to dwindle creating food shortages, causing people to turn to things like cannibalism. On the flip side, wild predators would find their natural food sources scarce and would probably begin attacking human settlements more frequently.

What level range are you thinking of?

I was thinking of making this maybe 8-10 years after the last human baby was born, and making the campaign start from level 3-5.

You need to watch the movie 'Children of Men' for inspiration, it is exactly this premise

Actually saw that, but not exactly what I am going for, close though. So, more about the setting, I was thinking that, for at least the beginning, the players would start in a city, similar to that of Ravnica, except the city wouldn’t be the world. Players would choose a side and would have to tow the line, for the city is the last bastion of world peace blah blah blah. The city itself would house all the races, expected obviously those that are either not effected or are unable to not attack on sight. These factions would be the players way of knowing, more or less, how to trust and inform me the DM what direction they are looking into going. How does that sound?
