Looking for a monster: fiend / creature impersonating a deity / patron

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Shadow Lodge

I'm working on putting an adventure together, and part of the plot I want to do has several groups being instigated into conflict with one another by a fiend or some other evil creature with the ability to hijack divination, communion, and/or prophecy, thus convincing these groups' spiritual leaders that these conflicts are necessary and spurring them to action by divine command.

Does any creature already exist that possesses this ability or something like it?

Shadow Lodge

Too late to edit. Should probably add that 3rd party content/suggestions are welcome as well.

1) Nothing that I'm aware of off the top of my head.

This isn't what you're asking for, but I do remember an undead nasty from 3.5 that could cut divine casters off from their spells entirely with a failed save. I'd have to go digging for the name if you want specific info on that one. Might be something interesting and terrifying to add into your idea.

2) How soon do you need an answer? Nothing like "I'm running the game tonight", correct?

3) Is there any CR (or equivalent) that you're aiming for?

I can't do any real research during work hours, but I should be back home in about 3 hours.

If you end up doing something custom for this, I'd be more than willing to be a soundboard for you. I like the concept.

EDIT: I'm not particularly up-to-speed with current 3rd party materials, but I'm certainly willing to search.

Just make it a 9th-level wizard

Why not make it a unique ability? Have the fiend beat the caster's spell DC by 10. The fiend rolls 1d20, plus its Hit Die, plus its Charisma Modifier. On success, the fiend intercepts the spell and has to make a disguise check to successfully pose as the original target of the spell.

Scarab Sages

Pathfinder Adventure, Adventure Path, Maps, Starfinder Adventure Path, Starfinder Maps Subscriber

Sounds something Pazuzu would do

Yeah I don't need it immediately.

I could go with something unique sure, I just wanted to know if something already existed or not =)

And of course a wizard would get a spell to pull this off =P Will negates does kinda mess with the chances of discovery admittedly, but iits not a terrible option.

Quell. A nice ability but not really what I'm going for - more deception, less negation =) I want the seers and shamans thinking nothing is out of the ordinary with their own powers.

Hmmm can't come up with a creature with that exact ability, though it might be out there as my knowledge of creatures isn't that good…

Though I'll drop a few fiends that might have 'themes' that are peripherally related to what your looking for:

Demons -> Vilsteth (probably the closest match to what your looking for), Lilitu

Devils -> Apostate Devil (Deimavigga), Nemesis Devil (Advodaza)

Asura -> Nikaramsa, Japalisura

Combine Scint's suggestion with John's idea of a unique ability...

And then look up Kaorti from the 3.5 Fiend Folio.

They might start the conflict as a way to distract from their true goal, or as a direct method for bringing about their desired result.

(Yes, Quell, thank you. But, using them after the deception has been discovered could work as another phase.)

Hot damn, that's perfect. That Idolatry ability. Unspeakable Truth is darn suitable too.

Swap out one of their SLAs for false future (or just make this Vilsteth a unique one with that as an SLA) and it's exactly what I need.

Thanks!

Yeah, that really is good.
