Are there any good kaiju?

Pathfinder RPG General Discussion

Since there are some in the movies (Mothra being the main example) it seems like there should be at least one good one.

Wait, doesn't Godzilla (the original kaiju) end up protecting Tokyo/Japan/Humanity?

Anyways, as far as I'm aware there is one officially stated good Kaiju, Earthking.

It depends on the setting (AKA movie) but both Godzilla and King Kong have been good guys. But they've also been bad guys too, I believe.

Most of them seem to be CN, since they've made some of them actually evil, it makes sense to have some that are good. It would be easy enough to have a good aligned space turtle like gamera.

I am surprised that many of them are any alignment other than true neutral. As I recall, most kaiju in Pathfinder have intelligence scores of 3, meaning that they are mostly driven by instinct and just barely have the mental capacity for moral thought.

At a guess they are chaotic purely by accident. As kaiju are living in a world not sized for them, they can't like "move around" or "eat" without causing considerable chaos by upsetting the existing natural order, though it's not on purpose.

It's not so much that they're chaotic as much as they cause chaos around them, because they can't help but negatively impact the environment around them.

Since Godzilla was originally a guy in a rubber suit, couldn't you base one off of a skin/robe/cloak concept that transforms the character into the beast?

Good kaiju?

Gamera is really neat!
He is filled with turtle meat!
We all love you, Gamera!

Gamera is more a protector of Earth itself, not its inhabitants though...

Gamera will always protect kids.

He is basically the paladin of the party.

Every kaiju in every continuity has had its phases.

Heck, even Ghidorah got a movie as a good guy (alas).

If Pathfinder's kaiju don't rock Good alignments, it's likely because what they want to channel about kaiju isn't necessarily the Showa Superheroics of Godzilla or Gamera's lighter phases...

I mean, it's possible that Golarion just doesn't (or hasn't) grown good and/or intelligent Kaiju. Perhaps it has something to do with the proximity of Rovagug or it's just because the current year on Earth is like the 1920s so even Earth is low on Kaiju compare to how things are going to be in the near future.

I don't think Godzilla was actually a good guy. More like he just happened to be fighting the same kaiju who was currently attacking the city.

Varies wildly based on what movie you're watching. Godzilla's been everything from out and out bad guy, to what you described, to single father extraordinare, to defender of earth.

Anyone here old enough to remember the Godzilla cartoon from the 70s? It was on reruns well into the 90s. He was definitely a good guy in that.

I like Godzilla as the Patron Saint of Collateral Damage. XD He'll solve your problem, but expect stuff to get wrecked in the process.

(Deciding when to summon Godzilla can be very interesting, too...)

Toho wrote:

Gojira- 1954- Force of nature. Malevolent shadings in some interpretations, but largely a Neutral menace.

Godzilla Raids Again- 1955- Neutral force of nature- both Godzilla and Anguirus.

Rodan- 1956- Basically animals.

Varan the Unbelievable- 1958. Essentially neutral.

Mothra- 1961- Intelligent neutral- cares only about retrieving the twins. Cheerfully destroys whatever impedes that goal.

King Kong vs. Godzilla- 1962- Godzilla is presented as slightly more malevolent than Kong, but they're still basically neutral.

Atragon- 1963- Manda the Serpent is a guardian of Mu- doesn't seem to have much in the way of free will.

Mothra vs. Godzilla- 1964- Mothra is presented as largely benevolent/good here. Godzilla is presented as an absolute menace, although, again, there seems little in the way of a moral dimension to it.

Ghidorah the Three-Headed Monster- 1964- Ghidorah is out and out evil. First time Godzilla and Rodan are presented as out and out sapient. Both are neutral curmudgeons, but agree to throw down with Ghidorah. Mothra is by now basically locked into a good-aligned role.

Dogora- 1964- Basically neutral.

Invasion of the Astro-Monster/Godzilla vs. Monster Zero- 1965- Ghidorah's still evil- although here he's under the control of Planet X, and leaves the second their control is no longer present. Godzilla and Rodan are in the heroic spots, but only after being taken and controlled by Planet X for a bit as bad guys, and they mostly seem to fight Ghidorah 'cause they remember him from last time.

Frankenstein vs. Baragon- 1965- "Frankenstein" is basically a confused neutral. Baragon is an animalistic predator.

War of the Gargantuas- 1966- Gaira's pretty nasty. Might skew him evil- definitely the cruel end of neutrality at best. Sanda's a pretty good egg, all told.

Ebirah, Horror of the Deep- 1966- Ebirah's under the control of the Red Bamboo terrorists. No real volition. Godzilla's a neutral in this one. Plan A was for this to be a Kong movie, and it shows in how the fights are conducted, and in Godzilla's interactions with the humans.

King Kong Escapes- 1967- Kong is basically a pawn in this one. Neutral opposing the evil Doctor Who, who briefly brainwashes him.

Son of Godzilla- 1967- Basically neutral. The Kamacuras are kinda jerks, but they're predatory insects, whaddya want?

Destroy All Monsters- 1968- Ghidorah's a mind-controlled baddie. Again. Just about every other kaiju was minding its own business, doing enutral stuff, prior to getting mind-controlled.

All Monsters Attack/Godzilla's Revenge- 1969- Allowing that the kaiju exist mostly in a kid's mind in this film, Minilla and Godzilla are basically good guys, and Gabara's a bullying jerk.

Space Amoeba- 1970- Kinda sorta a take on Yog-Sothoth by way of kaiju. Alien neutral malice

Godzilla vs. Hedorah- 1971- Godzlla's basically a good guy in this one. Trying to save Earth's biosphere. Hedorah's a toxic jerkwad. Sentience debatable.

Godzilla vs. Gigan- 1972- Godzilla and Anguirus are basically good guys. Gigan's a sadistic cruel jerk. Ghidorah's evil. And mind controlled again.

Godzilla vs. Megalon- 1973- Megalon serves Seatopia in a fairly justifiable grievance, but is controlled by them. Gigan's back, being a jerk. Godzilla's a good guy. Jet Jaguar is a terrifying good guy.

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla- 1974- Anguirus, Godzilla and King Caesar/Shisa are basically good guys, although a case for neutrality could be made. Mechagodzilla is, after all, a real threat.

Terror of Mechagodzilla- 1975- Godzilla's a sorta good guy... Titanosaurus is a mind-controlled neutral who really just wanted to mind his own business. Mechagodzilla is, again, a machine.

The Return of Godzilla- 1984- Dangerous neutral force of nature.

Godzilla vs. Biollante- 1989- Godzilla's a dangerous neutral seen as a serious threat. Biollante is... Biollante. Neutral.

Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah- 1991- Godzilla's a major neutral threat. Ghidorah is a gengineered mind-controlled beast directed by people from the future out to destroy Japan. No real heroes here.

Godzilla vs. Mothra- 1992- Gdzilla's the nominal heavy in this one. Mothra's a beamy good guy. Battra's a druid-style neutral who agrees to help take out Godzilla.

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II- 1993- Godzilla's the main threat. Rodan is presented as a neutral. Baby Godzilla is an infant.

Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla- 1994- Spacegodzilla is a malicious evil sucker. Godzilla is sort of a good guy- largely goaded into it by Spacegodzilla's attacks on Baby godzilla.

Godzilla vs. Destoroyah- 1995- Godzilla is a sympathetic (doomed) neutral. Destoroyah is... sadistic enough I might hang the evil tag on it. Godzilla Junior is sort of a brave little guy in over his head.

Rebirth of Mothra- 1996- Mothra's a goodie. Death Ghidorah is a VERY BAD guy.

Rebirth of Mothra II- 1997- Mothra's still a goodie. Dagarah is a malicious neutral to evil sort.

Rebirth of Mothra III- 1998- Mothra's good. Grand King Ghidorah is very, very bad.

Godzilla 2000- 1999- Godzilla is a neutral menace. Orga is a large alien menace. Arguably evil.

Godzilla vs. Megaguirus- 2000- Godzilla's a neutral menace. Megaguirus is a worse neutral menace. Seems to have a bit of malice to her, might be evil.

Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack- 2001- Godzilla is basically an evil undead-driven wrecking crew. Mothra, Ghidorah, and Baragon are sort of good guys, although it's emphasized that they defend Japan- the land- not humans.

Godzilla against Mechagodzilla- 2002- Godzilla's a malevolent neutral. Kiryu is a borderline insane cybernetic abomination.

Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.- 2003- Mothra's a goodie. Godzilla's a dangerous neutral. Kiryu is... Kiryu.

Godzilla: Final Wars- 2004- Kaiju are presented as neutral menaces, all get mind controlled except for Godzilla and Mothra. Mothra's as heroic as the script leaves her room to be. Godzilla's a neutral opposing evil, who refrains from smiting some humans at the end because Minilla asks him to.

Shin Godzilla- 2016- A dangerous neutral. Not really a creature with moral impetus- simply survives.

Legendary wrote:

Godzilla- 2014- All of the kaiju seem basically neutral, acting in response to natural impulses.

Kong: Skull Island- 2017- Kong is basically benevolent in nature. Everything else is animalistic to malevolent.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters- 2019- Not out yet, but Ghidorah seems evil. Everybody else seems neutral-ish. Mothra might still be her usual good guy role.

Gamera was a bad guy in hist first movie and then a good guy until the Kaneko flicks in the 1990s, when he became kind of a good-slanted neutral for the most part, opposing Gyaos, Legion,a nd Irys, of whom only the last didn't seem to have some instinctual excuses for behavior. Back to being a good guy in Gamera the Brave, where Zedus seemed pretty nasty.

Old news ;)

Mothra's color palette is more vibrant than Desna's though, so it's possible Mothra is just the rainbow version of the Black Butterfy.

Any Kaiju can be good with the right sauces and seasoning.

Does growing count as shapeshifting?

When it goes in both directions at break neck speed in less than 30 seconds then yes.
