Angelina Jolie negotiating to join The Eternals movie.

I think she would make a great Sersi.

That was my thought.

I'm amused by one bit of the article: "one aspect to the story involves the love story between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who relishes moving amongst humans. It is unclear who Jolie will play."

I want to see Jolie as Ikaris. :)

More seriously, I'm kind of torn with the idea of an Eternals movie. The concept is so cool and there's been some brilliant stuff done with them, but they've been handled so badly so many times since the Kirby days that I just can't get too enthusiastic about it.

And focusing on a love story between Ikaris and Sersi doesn't really do much to encourage me. How about focusing on the forbidden love story between Sersi and the Deviant warlord?

I'm pretty sure she was going to be Sersi just given the fact Thena is a) younger and b) blonde.

Oops, misremembering my Eternals. It was Thena and Kro, wasn't it.

I still don't remember Sersi and Ikaris.

thejeff,

Sersi dated lots of people. Ikaris mostly just led people while Zuras didn't do much. That's basically all I remember until volume 3 of Eternals.

Liberty's Edge

There are rumors she will play Marvel’s first openly gay character. Are there any gay female characters in the Eternals?

I hadn't heard anything about her playing a gay character, but there was a casting call or something a few weeks back calling for a gay male actor.

I am incredibly skeptical Angelina Jolie is being courted for Sersi. If they go with an Eternals movie, they are going to want to sign on an actress for that role who can commit to a full trilogy and probably various cross overs. Jolie I think is at a point in her career where she is not going to want to commit to that, and if she did it would cost a fortune.

If you look at the casting for their tent pole movies, they mostly have gone for young actors with a few prominent roles under their belts but who still mostly fly under the radar. See: Chadwick Boseman, Chris Pratt, Brie Larson.

Nah, if they are going with Angelina Jolie, it's probably as a villain (See: Cate Blanchett, Kurt Russell, Michael Keaton) or as a mentor figure (See Tilda Swinton, Annette Benning, Anthony Hopkins).

Being mainly a DC girl when I was growing up, and otherwise latecoming to Marvel, I have no idea who the heck the Eternals are. I'm not sure if I should be disinterested, or excited to learn about a new group of heroes. Let's lean toward the latter.

DQ...
In pre-historic times, the Celestials came to Earth and genetically modified cavemen.
The Eternals were modified with intelligence and powers.
The Deviants were modified with intelligence and a mutating gene that made everyone different.
While the third group was thought to have been left alone, they were instead given the ability to adapt. This gave rise to mutants and anyone who received super powers from external sources (like Cosmic Rays and Irradiated Spider Bites).
Later, the Kree came to Earth and modified more humans in imitation of the Celestials and created the Inhumans.

It's basically Kirby's take on the whole Chariots of the Gods kind of thing. He came back to Marvel and started the Eternals after creating the New Gods for DC and it came out of a similar mindset - though this was space god meddlers rather than actual Gods.

Wasn't as successful, possibly because there wasn't an iconic villain attached - until Thanos got retconned as an Eternal later on.

The Celestial Host was going to return and judge their creation, but Kirby never really got that far.

Well they did come back a couple of times, thejeff.... I mean there was the Final Host recently. Though not sure I should count that...

But, DQ, Charles has the right of it; the Celestials created the Eternals and opened up humans for mutant kind and mutates.

Yeah, theoretically the Judgement happened in Roy Thomas's run on Thor. Which I think was pretty faithful to where Kirby was going with it, though much more Thor focused.

And Celestials have been around a bunch more times since, not generally used that well in my opinion. As much as I like Aaron on Thor, I really didn't like his rewrite of Celestial history in that Avengers "Final Host" storyline. And his killing off the Eternals didn't even make sense.

Neil Gaiman's take on the Eternals some years back was really cool, but I'd rather it not be canon.

thejeff,

I dunno. I heard they might be using Gaiman's take as a basis for the movie. But that's just a rumor.

I will agree that Aaron's take was weird...but I think it was deliberate in terms of taking big players off the field to stop the War of the Realms. But I could be wrong.

Ikaris' main love interest was Margo Damien, a human woman (the Lois to his Clark), but she was later killed by Deviants.

Ikaris was retconned into having been one of Sersi's man-toys, centuries ago, but, AFAIK, that was literally just a one-liner from Sprite about how she'd slept with every other male Eternal but him over the centuries, so I regard it as jealous immortal tween hyperbole, more than canon.

Jolie has the sort of flirty vibe that would go well with Sersi. Not so much Thena, who is a more serious and 100% less vampy. That said, Jolie's makeup people have their work cut out for them if she's supposed to be playing a woman who looks like a 24 year old for the next decade or so...

Neil Gaiman version would be the reason for me to watch it. (who am I kidding I'll watch any super hero movie once.)

New Teaser Trailer

Personally, I'm cautiously optimistic. The cast looks to be stellar. Hopefully the story will hold up.

Also personally, I'd be cool with Ikaris leading the Avengers.

A-zombie,

I thought that was Dane... Also the trailer is nice. But I am curious as to the actual PLOT.

Right, that’s what you find out when you actually see the movie.

Why would you want to know the plot BEFORE you see the movie?

More importantly, why would you think Marvel would tell everyone the plot before the movie comes out?

Not the full plot of course, but you often have an idea of what the conflict they're going to be faced with is. Just not the details and especially how they resolve it.

See for example "Avengers: Age of Ultron" - I mean, the title itself tells you what they're up against.

This trailer just introduces the Eternals, as characters and as concept. There's no hints at what they're going be faced with in the movie. Now, it could just be some Bollywood dances, flashbacks and family dinners, but I doubt that.

I thought the trailer dropped a pretty important piece of the plot - that it wasn't set in the pre-history of the MCU like I was led to believe by most of the discussion about the movie and characters from Marvel previously. Yes, it shows their interaction with human history, but the teaser definitely makes it look like it's set primarily in the present day, which was news to me.

Joel,

Honestly I wasn't that surprised to see it set in the present considering that Marvel doesn't (USUALLY!!) go back in time but has a sliding time scale which moves forward. But I can concede with Eternals how that might be a thing.

Jeff,

That's pretty much exactly my point.

btw just curious I WAS right, that it was Dane/Kit Harrington that said that right?

I think so.

It'll be interesting to see what they're doing with Dane in the Eternals. He and Sersi were together for a bit in the Avengers, but that's the only connection I know of.

Jeff,

That's pretty much the only connection in terms of Dane being an Avenger and then leading (I think) the West Coast ones for a time.

Scarab Sages

Richard Madden, playing Ikaris according to IMDb, is the one who talked about leading the Avengers.

Kit Harrington, also according to IMDb, is playing Dane Whitman.

I can understand the confusion. They're both British dudes who starred in Game of Thrones, so they're practically identical.

Okay I HONESTLY thought Kit Harrington IE Jon Snow was the one saying that.

But even so, it's still funny in the context of what happens to Robb Stark in the books/show.

Dark Archive

So, Kit Harrington is Black Knight, Richard Madden is Ikaris, Maise Williams is Wolfsbane, Iwan Rheon is Maximus, Sophie Turner is Jean Grey, Peter Dinklage is Eitri...

Who from Game of Thrones do we have left? Cersei is Moonstone? Daenarys is Elsa Bloodstone? Jaimie is Reed Richards? Jon Snow's CGI Dire Wolf Ghost is Lockjaw?

Liberty's Edge

Emilia Clarke is joining the Marvel universe already!

They need to get Charles Dance. That dude is awesome.

Great point!

Indeed. Also we need Sean Bean in there some where.

Also we already have a Lockjaw. He just was in a terrible TV show...

Final trailer!

I'm excited!! :D

Carry on,

Eehhhh, maybe. Granted, we are doubling down on theater visits now that everything is open again, but Marvel has been losing its appeal. We'll see.

Wait for streaming.

I'm just irritated that they apparently "came here 7,000 years ago" rather than being either an ancient cousin race to humanity or the even older defense mechanism for the Earth seen in the recent reboots.

This trailer did give a hint at the plot though, which was nice.

I'm with the jeff, not fond of the "We came from the stars!" rather than "Ancient Space Gods made us to defend the planet."

But yeah, we got a plot FINALLY. Perhaps the 4th Celestial Host?
