Organized play noob - character prep, signup, etc

Organized Play

First time at this con. Hoping to get some advice about organized play. I've been to a few other cons and have the general context, but haven't played PFS / organized play events. I plan on going with my 14 y.o. son.

I have some specific questions and welcome any general advice - thanks all!

- Character prep. Do we just make a couple of 1st level characters and bring them along? If so, if we keep using them, what's the best way to deal with leveling up (on paper, bring a laptop with one of the helper excel sheets, pre-prep level progression)?

- Do we just show up at morning/evening slots and ask for a couple of slots at a table (sounds like most games of this type are not pre-sign-up)? I would think character classes/levels make the options pretty restrictive - do we need multiple character options to find a table that works?

If there is a starter guide, feel free to point me there - I couldn't find one.

Thanks!

Most PFS games are not part of the lottery, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t pre-registered. After the lottery ends, you’ll be able to sign up for PFS in open registration. Slots will fill up for some scenarios, so jump on it as soon as registration opens to get scenarios you can play together.

At the con, you’ll show up and can self-organize or get assigned to tables in your tier. Run whatever you bring; there’s no need to have an inventory of classes available. If the party mix seems really terrible, there will almost certainly be a PFS regular at your table who has multiple options to choose from.

You are in for a lot of fun! TomParker covered most of it.

If you do think you’ll level during the con, I would definitely suggest being prepared to have a paper copy of your leveled character. Not all of the tables have easy access to power outlets, and having a hard copy is important! Even if you use Herolab or something, you can probably just write the new stats on your first level character sheet.

As Kate suggested, have a copy of your character and maybe plan ahead what you want to do when you level up. There will be pre-generated characters available to play if you want to try something different at some point.

Also, there is usually a character creation station you can use to generate a new character and/or level up. You then print it out and take it with you.

You can do this for Starfinder characters as well if you are interested in trying SFS.

Some solid advice here. Is there a level cap players should be planning for in order to scale up. Please advise and if your running a Starfinder Table at Paizocon and want 2 players let me know. Looking forward to the con.

For PFS tables, you start at level with 1st level characters built according to the campaign rules (found in the Roleplaying Guild Guide), and level up according to those rules (short version: every 4 hour session earns you 1xp, and you level up at multiples of 3xp). The general level cap in PFS is 11, so if you're starting with new characters, you won't be bumping into that. :)

For non-PFS tables, most will be providing characters, but some advise on how to build one for that specific game. Click on the "show event details" link on any session to get that sort of additional information.

Thanks for all the info, all. However, I'm still a little confused.

When I look at the listed Pathfinder events, say on Saturday. I see a bunch of games 8am-1pm, then only 3 Pathfinder Society games in the afternoon/evening. Can someone clarify what Tom said above - specifically, will there be a bunch more games listed after pre-reg ends? The "but that doesn't mean they aren't pre-registered" leads me to think that they would be listed here...

In previous years, there weren't any Society games in the afternoons. They added some afternoon games this year, but it seems like at a reduced volume relative to the morning and evening slots.

Saturday evening is a special case because of the Banquet. Friday evening has lots of Society tables scheduled and Saturday evening has the Pathfinder Society multi-table special.

Though I suppose to answer the question that you asked, no, all the games are currently listed and there are not likely to be significant games added at this point.

That being said, there are also events that don't require signups and won't be on the schedule. These include the delves, which are ~20 minute games run by Paizo staff, and the Reaper paint-and-take table, where you can paint a miniature. If you're not attending the Banquet, I can pretty much guarantee there will be some pickup games during that time.

They are listed there. All the items that have no rating shown for the lottery and say “signup not open” will open up after the lottery ends.
