Plot in Fire Starters motivated by real world politics? *spoilers*

Let me start this by saying that I do not want to start a conversation that is arguing real world politics, and that I will not engage anyone who tries.

The whole story arc of Fire Starters revolves around a radical and apperantely racist lashunta group that tries to take over asanatown. The locals protest against them with quotes like "Not Our Collective" which sounds very close to the modern day use of "Not my President" when used against Donald Trump. The whole thing felt like it was some imagined future where some Trump-like figure takes over and wants to force the non lashuntas out of Asanatown. These constant parallels to real life politics is making me very reluctant to run this campaign because I dont seek to insert real life modern politics into our sessions with people who vary on the political spectrum, and would feel attacked.

Dont get me wrong, I love a good scenario revolving around radicals trying to take over, but this felt very unoriginal and too close to home.

I get that I might be the only person who cares about this, but it's something I felt like posting about. Also, if its confirmed that I'm wrong about all this, then I will accept that.

Please dont argue politics in the thread, this isnt the place for it :/

Pretty weird that this adventure has vague resemblances to a fever dream imagining of current politics that is coincidentally a very common historical occurrence and trope.

If it's motivated by what you fear then your appropriate reaction isn't concern, but instead pity for the author being so unoriginal and obsessed with nonsense. Just like the intro to the War for the Crown AP, you should be laughing, not frowning.

Little known fact: Americans have said "Not my president" about way more than our current president. I'm not all that old (Ok, I'm an ancient relic of a forgotten time. Get off my lawn.) but I can remember people saying this as far back as President Bush. The first one.

Semi-racist, big on ridding 'a country' of people that aren't from there? Not only is that more than one American president, that's not an uncommon thing from other leaders, of whole other countries, all throughout history.

So, much like Xenocrat pointed out, this is a super common trope, from all over the world, from ancient history up to current events.

I would be fine with it if was from a previous era, but in the modern era, I think that the assumptions made in the AP are extreme. To impose events in modern times in the USA to be like what happens in the AP is ridiculous. Was there really no other such events that it could draw from?

"Bad actors use scapegoating to seize power, some people object to this" is an incredibly common pattern in history.

That we see modern parallels in it is testament to people not learning from history.

What a fascinating topic that will never ever get hijacked and turned into a screaming match. Why I'm certain that gamers and people on the internet would never dare argue with one another in a thread like this during a time of painful international discourse.

Also, I was born yesterday.

In all seriousness, as much as I would love for Paizo to openly bash Trump, I think the theme of the AP's first volume is clearly a "pan-historical" thread that is sufficiently divorced from current events for the sake of Paizo's bottom line. I'd love it to be a Trump bashing thing, but it is clearly not that.

Thank you for trying as hard as you could to not argue politics in the thread. I think.

Actually thank you for your post. I do not agree with you that Paizo should be openly bashing any real world figure, but your opinion that they are not targeting real world happenings along with some conversation with IRL friends has convinced me that I was wrong about my assumptions. So thanks :)

Hey, your mileage may vary but yeah, it's not 1 to 1 comparison.

Back in medieval days, one of the scariest thoughts was of some monster coming out of the woods to raid and pillage. Fear of the unknown. Thus when we do fantasy versions, we get goblins and such. In futuristic stories, the main foes are usually some form of corrupt government, as well as brainwashing. This adventure is just playing into that-but we've come along so much in technology it sometimes feels like the future, so it definitely hits closer to home.

This is an excellent response, thank you.
