Effect of Names and Avatars

Gamer Life General Discussion

Has anyone with more energy and sensitivity than I possess studied how chosen names and avatar artwork affect how forum-folk act and are perceived to act?

If I had to hypothesize, the causation for the first part (how names and avatars affect how people act) is the other way around: people choose the names and avatars based on how they already act (i.e., based on their modes of thought, preferences, tastes, etc.); they don't choose their behaviors because of their names/avatars.

The second part (perception of actions by others) is an extremely complicated subject in and of itself, as it is strongly affected by the biases of the person perceiving the action(s).

*vomits acidic saliva over the thread* what, why did you ask?

I actually picked this because the name wasn't taken and magehunter is a hobgoblin alternate racial trait.

Consequently I murder spellcasters frequently.

I always wonder how people can stay with one avatar their entire time here.

I picked mine because as a Game Master I sometimes feel like I'm trapped and being drowned by a wicked group of players who decide to jump off the rails and do their own things as opposed to following the path the adventure is leading to.

As for changing avatars, I'm far too lazy to spend the time.

Plus, that avatar's got a wicked awesome soul patch.

EDIT: Or is that just a wrinkly chin? I'm going with soul patch, because wrinkly chin is never wicked awesome.

I originally had Groetus as an avatar because the character I was playing when I signed up for the messageboards was an inquisitor of G. I changed to Polina because she's maybe my favorite piece of Pathfinder art (and that's saying something, because there are a LOT of talented artists making stuff for Paizo).

The name antedates Pathfinder by a good 10 years. I'm leaving the origins shrouded in mystery, however...

I mean, it's a little hard to pull off MageHunter with an avatar of a brownie.

How so? It's not like Mages are rolling in hit points and rock a heavy suit of armor.

"Oh no, the guy in the funny hat can conjure darts! Run for your lives!!!"

Now, a wizard, those people f#~@ shit up.

I tend to think the avatar can have an impact on what your saying. It for sure gets brought up from time to time. This one gets me beard jokes for example.

The other day I was giving medicine to my cat and he lashed out and slashed a big old bleeding cut just under my lip.

"Mah soul patch! He was goin fer mah soul!" I dramatically yelled.

He didn't deny it.

They're a popular look. Hobgoblin fashion is really catching on.

I experimented for a while with various radically different avatars in large part because this one was supposedly used by a lot of others, so I tried finding obscure stuff; eventually, though I realized that there is such a thing as "wore it best"!

I started by searching for the least used Avatars myself.

Scarab Sages

I migrated here directly from the WotC forums, and this avatar got started there with this Magic card art. I daresay I'd have kept it if I could.
