Completely Original Idea: Fighter Bravery Alternative!

Homebrew and House Rules

I've made a Bravery alternative for the Fighter class, which I bet is a completely new, original idea that no one has ever tried. Jokes aside, I, like many, felt like the ability itself was a bit lackluster, so I made an option that could possibly be better! Please feel free to tell me if any of the following abilities are crap, unbalanced or maybe even alright! Enjoy!

Conditioning (Ex): Starting at 2nd level, and every five levels thereafter, you may select a form of conditioning. This conditioning provides you a +1 bonus to the specified saves or skill checks listed in the form of conditioning. This bonus increases by 1 for every four levels beyond 2nd.

Alertness: You're constantly vigilant to any creature's attempting to hide from you or your allies, adding your conditioning bonus to Perception checks made to notice hidden creatures.

Audacity: You are resistant to most forms of intimidation, and find it easy to see past factors such as size and situation, you may double your conditioning bonus to the DC of demoralization attempts made against you.

Courage: Your mental resolve is strong, and are able to push through even the most terrifying of situations, adding your conditioning bonus to Will saves against fear effects.

Cunning: You can duck and weave through the midst of combat, and can shift out of the way in a moment's notice, adding your conditioning bonus to Acrobatics checks made to move through a threatened square without provoking an attack of opportunity.

Defiance: Your mind is conditioned against effects that would affect your mental faculties, adding your conditioning bonus to Will saves against mind-affecting effects.

Endurance: Your body is resistant against poisons that would make its way into your body, adding your conditioning bonus to Fortitude saves against poisons.

Suspicion: You're always on edge in the midst of combat, with each movement hiding the possibility of attack, adding your conditioning bonus to Sense Motive checks against feint attempts.

Vigilance: You are always ready for a fight, and tend to react faster in the throes of combat, you can add your conditioning bonus to initiative checks.

This class feature replaces the bravery class feature.

I like it. It seems to be ‘vigilance’ would be more advantageous than the rest, because it would come up each and every combat. But conceptually I like this. Will offer to the next one of my PCs who plays a fighter...(which is increasingly rare, for perhaps the same reason you are suggesting an option like this...)

Thanks, yeah, i was worried about that one! I was inspired by a feat that allowed you to add your bravery bonus to your initiative... Bravery in Action i believe it's called.

Perhaps it'd be better off not being able to be stacked with Improved Initiative?

Even if it is more useful, or used the most often, I'd be perfectly okay with leaving it and allowing it to stack with Improved Initiative. It's not as if the Fighter is overpowered in any way.

Hahaha, very true. Makes sense for the fighter to be the most ready for combat anyways i guess :P

Of those options, Vigilance is unambiguously the best. The others have too many situational limitations. Another thing worth noting is the existence of the Armed Bravery advanced weapon training option for fighters that modifies the Bravery bonus to apply to all Will saves, which I think communicates quite clearly what Paizo thinks of the class feature with 20:20 hindsight.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I really like the descriptive texts of your conditioning ability.

I would raise the choices to be on par with vigilance, myself. A flat bonus to skills and saves would make a fighter a much more compelling choice!

For example, cunning as a flat bonus to all acrobatics, but double for combat movement.

Of course, I'm just spit-balling here :P

Vigilance is quite good, the reason for the situational limitations was to depict the fighter's breadth of skills in the midst of combat. A fighter would - in most cases - be best equipped to see if the assassin is really going to swing with his left hand, instead of noticing if that noble is deceiving him.

What would you suggest to fix the issue for this homebrew? What Terronus stated sounds like a nice idea, and would bring Vigilance up to par.

As said above :) Though the idea of having the flat bonus, then doubling for the specific nature does sound quite nice. Will allow the fighter to get a little bit more skills. A maximum of +5 at level 18 to Acrobatics checks is quite small, though +10 to Tumble attempts may be a bit..

EDIT: I believe that I was intending on staying with the same theme as Bravery (small circumstantial bonus) but being more versatile with it. Is this a bad idea?
Making the bonuses less specific sounds like the best idea

Perhaps a new change?

Spoiler:

Alertness: Add your conditioning bonus to Perception checks.

Courage: Add your conditioning bonus to Will saves against fear effects. At 10th level, you may add double your conditioning bonus to Will saves against fear effects.

Cunning: Add your conditioning bonus to Acrobatics checks.

Suspicion: Add your your conditioning bonus to Sense Motive checks.

These are at least the ones i'd change

Thanks for the constructive feedback though! :D
