Question about PACG Subscription

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game General Discussion

Hey everyone,

So, I recently decided to join PACG's subscription. I picked the Core Set as my first product. I was discussing this on another forum and one of the members said "By default though, you’ll be getting (and be charged for) Core and Curse at the same time with the subscription."

Does this mean that I'll be getting the Core Set and Curse of the Crimson Throne, or that I will just be charged for both items but only receive the one I picked?

If I am going to be charged for both but only receive one, it sounds like I am being ripped off...

Thanks,
Grabnar

You would be charged for, and sent, both of them. They're each included in the subscription but are being released at the same time.

That's odd. Why'd it only have me pick one then?

Because before the format change it let overseas people only subscribe for the small expansion deck boxes. That way they got all the promo cards (those came with the small boxes) but could buy the large main set box in their country and not pay the much larger shipping cost.

Frankly, the cost of an AP box was prohibitive due to the shipping (except for those with disposable income to waste, or those that live in the neighborhood of the warehouse), leading to many subscribers cancelling their subscriptions to purchase the base set locally and then re-subscribe to get the AP decks monthly.

Both the core set and the [Curse of the Crimson Throne] AP boxes look to be similar in terms of how much they contain, so the shipping cost isn't likely to change much, if at all. And since the AP box contains everything that used to come in six installments (character add-on deck plus adventures 2-6), there doesn't look to be any monthly product that a subscription would support. If this turns out to be a correct assumption, then the subscription becomes pointless unless some other material that is cost-effective for shipping is introduced.

Personally, I wouldn't advise that anyone start a PACG subscription at this point in time until we have confidence that it's going to be worthwhile. I still subscribe, but I'm waiting for word on whether or not the subscription will be worth it. The character deck subscription is still totally worth it (for those of us that want everything).

So I’m wasting money with the subscription essentially? How do I subscribe just for the character decks since I am interested in those?

I don't know that the PACG subscription is a waste of time. That will depend on what Paizo/Lone Shark do with it once the core set is released. That's why I haven't cancelled my subscription yet - it would be a waste of time to cancel the subscription only to restart it later if it turns out to be a good thing.

From a cost perspective, it was cheaper for me to drive to my local game store and pay the price with tax than it was for me to get the AP boxed set through the subscription with the discount. Considerably cheaper. The fact that I didn't get the box as soon as subscribers didn't matter one bit considering the cost. And I lived on the left coast at that time (I imagine that shipping to more distant locations, especially those overseas, is considerable more costly). Now for those that really wanted the set *right now* and could afford it, I guess it was worth it. YMMV.

Actually, in looking at the subscriptions, it looks like the two subscriptions have been merged, so a PACG subscription includes both the AP stuff and the character decks. At least, I *think* that's what is going on (I don't recall any announcement/communication to that effect). If that is correct, then you're covered. It won't change the fact that many will cancel their subscriptions (temporarily) if the cost of shipping the core set and/or APs remains prohibitively high. I'm hoping the subscriptions will now include an option to opt out of certain products (because you don't want them or the cost is too high). That will solve a lot of problems.

Welp, now I am definitely not as excited about my subscription and getting the Core Set...

I wouldn't sweat it. In the past Paizo has been good about notifying subscribers that a base set has been coming soon in order to cancel their subscription if the shipping price is too high for them. If the shipping price remains high for the core set, AP, or both, I imagine they'll do the same this time around.

The really great thing about the subscriptions has been the promo cards.

What do the promo cards come with usually? And idk if it matters or not but none of my local game stores sell PACG. Is the subscription still not worth it? I don’t really have a disposable income, so now I’m super worried.

Actually most of us living abroad are just waiting for Vic to give more infos on what will be or not in the subscription (and what about promo cards and other pertinent details) to decide whether to cancel our subscriptions or not.

Vic has always been very helpful so I'm sure he will be.

With the new format, if Paizo makes sure that local retailers (in France in my case) get the products on time for release date, I assume that there is a good chance that there won't be a lot of reasons for subscribing. And FLGS will love that.

I cancelled my subscription yesterday (europe here).

My local online retailer already lists both sets with free domestic shipping, tracking and roughly at the price of the subscription (without shipping), so it was clear what to do. Shipping from paizo would cost me +60$ with no tracking, which is not worth the promo cards for me (in the worst case that this is the only way to get them).

Definitely feels like I made a mistake now. I just have to cancel before May right?

Yeah, you'll get a mail that tells you when they're handling orders for subscriptions, so you can wait to react until then.

I'm probably opting out too since I'm also in Europe+. But I'll wait for some news on the subscriptions.

I don't live overseas so the shipping isn't too bad for me, but depending on the details it might or might not be worth the 20% discount and potential access to promos. I'm also not sure yet whether my FLGS will be stocking the sets when they come out.

So I too am sitting on my subscription until we get more information, like what the weight of these two sets will be. (Have they announced that anywhere yet?)

I haven't seen anything yet.

I'm also in the "wait and see" camp. I'm not overseas and shipping isn't too bad for me usually. I find that the discount+shipping usually balances out. I generally don't like pre-ordering from my FLGS due to multiple pre-order issues

Where can I go to find updates about PACG and the subscription? It's definitely going to be something I need to watch.

I don't want to needlessly waste my money. I guess it's not really wasting my money since the shipping and subscription cancel one another out, but I am still not really getting anything by subscribing.

Updates will be provided by Paizo/Lone Shark when they become available.

You're not wasting your money. Yes, the big boxes might be cost-prohibitive, but the smaller decks (character decks) are worth it, and they will include free promo cards.

Just be patient and you'll get the info you need to make an informed decision.

Paizo exclusively sells its products for a limited amount of time after they release. Retailers usually have to wait a couple weeks until they are able to sell new Paizo products, so by having a subscription you usually get early access, which is something you get for your money if shipping and subscription cancel each other out.

Being in europe + buying from a retailer usually means having to wait for 2 months (1 month for shipping and 1 for retailer access), so there is that.

Nothing in the first paragraph is true. There is no exclusivity in the majority of the PACG products, and early access is not a subscriber perk. While it’s true that you often get your products before the official street date (assuming you live close-ish by for shipping to not take weeks), you can also receive them after they’re available in stores. The street date is when stores are first allowed to sell them.

European retailers likely have a longer lead time because their distributor likely orders large bulk of product from paizo which is then sent over on a very slow ship, and then has to be distributed from the distibutor’s warehouse to the retailers. I can see this taking some months, so in that case the sub does likely get to you much earlier than retailers stock it. But, that’s because the retailers aren’t even selling it until far after its original release date, not because of any particular exclusivity that paizo has.

I don't see what is not true in my paragaraph when you break it down to what actually happens:

You're saying that
- there is a street day, before which stores other than paizo won't sell the products
- I can order products from paizo before this date, and paizo will ship them before then

By my definition, that is exclusive availability from paizo between the day that shipping starts and the street day, which, in my experience, is roughly 2-3 weeks.
Correct me if I'm wrong here, but having a subscription also means you get your stuff shipped at the earliest point in time (my understanding is that individual orders are sent out afterwards), so compared to stores that is early access. Any store has to ship the stuff to me as well after they get it from paizo, so it's bound to take longer.

I haven't said anything along the lines that paizo enforces or endorses this kind of exclusivity and neither meant to imply that, but that's just how the process breaks down in the end. If you think I phrased that poorly, that's fine, but with regards to content, I don't see how what you wrote is different from what I wrote.

So, I wouldn't call it exclusivity because you can preorder from stores just like you can preorder from Paizo. Paizo ships early, but that isn't a guarantee that you'll receive the product before you could pick it up from the local retailer.
